I can't find the old one in Health, and we deserve to be in brand new shiny Sport and exercise anyway

I have a question for all you runners - when does a twinge count as something sufficiently bad that you need to rest it - ie stop running for a few days? esp if you;re training for something (marathon in my case)? The otehr day I noticed a twinge as I set off for my run, but it soon disappeared. then today I noticed it again - but only walking downstairs. I don;t want to take any time off but I don;t want to make it worse and end up taking more time off. any opinions?

Pendulum · 21/01/2009 20:52

hatwoman, I've been trying to ignore the twinge in my knee for two weeks, but it has got progressively worse. It doesn't really hurt when I'm running, but gets stiff after I've been sitting down a while and is very sharp when I walk downhill or downstairs (both apparently classic ITB symptoms)

The advice I read was - if you can't walk briskly for a mile without pain, you shouldn't run. I'm going up the wall with frustration but I hope that by retiring for a week or so I can get rid of it totally.

hatwoman · 21/01/2009 20:59

thanks pendulum - the only time I notice it is walking downstairs - and I've just realised that I walked downstairs a minute ago without feeling anything at all...so I'll just keep a careful eye on it.

fishie · 21/01/2009 21:12

hatwoman are your shoes ok, not wearing out? i had agony in hip which was down to being badly shod.

have noticed my knee is v creaky in colder weather, replacing above knee tights thingies with below knee (3/4?) has helped. it was making noises as i ushered people into their seats for a rather difficult meeting today as well.

MrsWednesday · 21/01/2009 21:38

Hatwoman, I've the same thing in my left knee for a few weeks but I've been carrying on regardless as I have a half-marathon coming up. Self-diagnosed myself with runner's knee which sounds like what pendulum has?

Running doesn't seem to make it any worse - if it did I would definitely stop, but I do notice more pain when going up and downstairs (the pain went away completely last week when I was staying in a hotel and using the lift!).

Bit the bullet last night and went out with the local running club which was really good fun. Pushed myself so much harder than I do when I go on my own - realised that I have been sticking at the same pace all the time, so when I had to run 'fast' (i.e. not very fast at all in comparison to everyone else!) I totally forgot how to breathe properly. I thought I was going to keel over at one point, and I've been absolutely knackered (and starving hungry) all day today.

Hope all injuries clear up very soon, it's so frustrating when you can't get out.

Pendulum · 22/01/2009 10:20

MrsWednesday, I think what I have is iliotibial band syndrome - pain on the outside of the knee rather than below it, which is classic runner's knee.

According to my research most injuries don't hurt much while you are actually running because of the endorphins you produce- it's only afterwards that the pain kicks in.

I think it's difficult to know when to stop but in my case the pain was definitely getting worse. I wouldn't necessarily stop for the odd twinge.

SachaF · 22/01/2009 16:05

Hi Saffer,
I ran in both my pregnancies. I ran 'till 7 1/2 months with no 1 (running with the club, just getting progressively slower and generally running with the recovering from injury people and chatting) and until 6 months with no2 when I physically struggled (can't remember if it was pelvic floor or joints, but it was much more uncomfortable) so I took to a bike until 3 weeks before due date.
You can run as long as you feel comfortable. Runners World do a book www.amazon.com/Runners-World-Guide-Running-Pregnancy/dp/1579547478 which I found fairly helpful (it does repeat some stuff in normal pregnancy books) and in there it suggests further resources.

MrsWednesday · 22/01/2009 19:44

Oh right, thanks for the clarification pendulum, mine is definitely below the knee not the outside.

Saffer, my sister has only just stopped running at 35 weeks - I think when the baby dropped she started to find it really uncomfortable, but apart from that she has been fine. Congrats by the way.

hatwoman · 23/01/2009 23:48

hi everyone. I'm recovering from the humiliation of my first run with new mums at the new school. "ooooo you're doing a marathon" "yes but don't get over-excited. I'm slow and rubbish at hills" "yes but the marathon". They took me on the fell run from hell. I swear some bits had a gradient of about 1:3.

In actual fact it wasn't from hell it excellent but blimey these girls can run.

hawesmead5 · 24/01/2009 20:54

Hi saffer this book is brill to use if you are planning to run throughout your pregnancy www.amazon.co.uk/Runners-World-Guide-Running-Pregnancy/dp/1579547478/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=boo ks&qid=1232830241&sr=8-2 I ran and raced until I was 4 months (I even won a fell race at this time) But had to stop when a scan revealled that I also had a large tumor attached to my fallopian tube. However undetered I took up swimming and was doing an average of 200 length a week right up until the big day. I actually swam 80 lengths on the day I gave birth!

hawesmead5 · 24/01/2009 20:55

Sorry I will try to make that link clicky for you

BlessThisMess · 25/01/2009 23:23

Hi all, I haven't been here for a while but am now only 4 weeks away from my first 10k race. Have only been running since last Sept so still a beginner.

I've been getting discomfort in my left hip and fear it is the top end of the ilio-tibial band (have had twinges on the outside of my knees too, but not bad or regular). I may be in danger of getting trochanteric bursitis if I am not careful, so am not pushing myself as hard as I otherwise would. I did 3.5 miles today and hip seems fine at the moment, though I was finding last week that it was hurting in my sleep as I lay on the left side.

TinyWhiteFeather · 27/01/2009 01:25

Hi, am still not doing anything worth posting about, allthough did manage a decent 5k on saturday morning. Mornings would be a good time for me to run at the moment, but can only do it weekends.

Allthough I planned an early one on Sunday and didn't leave the house until 12.30 lol.

I was going to suggest a run hatwoman, but not until I am feeling better. Maybe mid spring if you are interested {hopefu]

Good running to all, it is still inspirational reading what you are all up to.

sfxmum · 27/01/2009 13:52

hi all some of these post remind me I really need to get out of my comfort zone and push harder and it seems running with others does the trick

I went out both days this weekend and today, pouring down on Sunday just runners out smiling at each other always feels like shared guilty secret

hope preps for races are going well

congrats to Saffer hope you are feeling well

mrsmike · 27/01/2009 18:19

Hello runners, not posted for 2 weeks as I am sulking because I have a calf injury. Torn gastrocnemius I think - have widely consulted and self diagnosed . When it happened it felt like someone had flicked me in the back of the leg with something, most odd sensation, I actually looked round to see if anyone was there! Have any of you others had this?

MrsWednesday · 27/01/2009 22:09

sfxmum, have just been out with the running club again and have pushed myself much harder - was told to by the woman leading the group and she looked quite fierce . Is there a local group you could join?

Sounds like there's quite a few of us suffering aches, pains and strains at the minute, me included. I didn't do my planned long run at the weekend to give my knee a rest but I feel stale, stuffy and bad tempered if I haven't been out so went tonight and am suffering again now. Your injury sounds very odd mrsmike, can't say I've ever experienced anything like that!

Is it best to go to the local GP for running injuries, or do you all go to physios etc?

mrsmike · 27/01/2009 23:25

Apparently that feeling of being pinged or flicked in back of leg is fairly common - have consulted other runners. Some of whom have said they don't bother with GPs, physios etc as often receive conflicting advice - so just ice and rest and elevate - can't remember in which order!

xfabba · 28/01/2009 13:32

Hi there hatwoman thought i'd pop over to this thread too from our marathon one - need all the motivation I can get.

Was wondering about icing - dumb question but what is the best way to do it? I am not injures as such but my knees ahve started to ache after I run, particularly on treadmill, someone suggested icing to help. Do you just literally wrap some icecubes in a flannel or something and sit with it on? I also have some of those frozen gel pack things - would that do the trick?

Twink · 28/01/2009 13:48

I use my frozen gel thingy, either wrapped in the little bag it came in - if I can find it, or just in a tea towel. I usually leave it on for around 10 mins, then refreeze and repeat if necessary.

I've also used bags of frozen veg when desparate too - dd is always trying to get me to use the sweetcorn as she loathes it!

A friend bought me a tube of Deep Ice (same manufacturer as Deep Heat) which is handy for using at work to avoid odd questions from the kids . For more serious twinges, I've got a tube of ibuprofen gel too.

sfxmum · 28/01/2009 15:11

Hi all

mrsW thee is a local club which I have on my to do list to join but feeling really chicken about it

about icing I have gel pack but I noticed on the runner's world book they recommend keeping aside a bag of frozen peas for this express purpose, it notes it will save you from painful injuries if you use it regularly after running should there be a twinge

usually I would be going out today and tomorrow but dd home with a bug so I am stuck unless I manage to wake up early enough tomorrow and if dh does not need an early work start

be nice to have 'known' people on the marathon this year

mileniwmffalcon · 30/01/2009 22:17

i'm steadily reading this thread from the beginning, but it's taking a while so thought i'd chuck in an intro in the mean time.

thanks to those who helped out on my "running without injury" thread i've transformed literally overnight from a casually interested observer into an almost-equipped bugger-i-have-to-do-this-now-er. thanks all

tomorrow morning is my free morning when dp takes the girls dancing, so i'm planning a little yoga followed by my first c25k session.

wish me luck

mileniwmffalcon · 31/01/2009 14:43

i did it

am so chuffed and not a little surprised that i managed all the runny bits and didn't have to stop at all. i used the podrunner podcast which was great. and i wasn't quite as self conscious as i expected either. yay me lol.

sfxmum · 31/01/2009 15:48

well done you

I have been stuck home all week since Tuesday because dd got a nasty D&V bug, hoped to go out today but got a cold Thursday night sore throat the blocked nose all very frustrating
am off tomorrow regardless have a party in the afternoon so have to make up for it

hope everyone is well

BlessThisMess · 01/02/2009 16:05

I've been on juices only this week, and have been low in energy (contrary to the theory, grrr)! So only managed 2 miles on Weds and a feeble 15 minutes yesterday! And today it feels too horribly freezing cold to go out.

3 weeks today and I have my first 10k. Must get some energy somewhere!!!

oldwomanwholivedinashoe · 01/02/2009 16:24

I would love to start runninng.
can you tell me how to start?!
At the momnet I am about a stone overweight and I am really unfit, having done no exercise since I got pregnant 5 years ago.
We live in the countryside and I work till 6 so dont get home till 6:30 when it is dark.
What can I do? And how do I start?
