I can't find the old one in Health, and we deserve to be in brand new shiny Sport and exercise anyway

OP posts:
fishie · 14/01/2009 21:19

sfxmum does it measure distance accurately? just mapmyrun is so irritating to use and i am sure very much underestimate what i am doing, is under trees.

cautionary tale for you all. i have a horrible navy blue bit on end of little toe which really hurts. it was because i didn't align sock seams properly.

sfxmum · 14/01/2009 21:23

fishie it seems to as I have been on a known route , signposted with distances etc, apparently you can calibrate it but I don't need it to be THAT exact

reminds me I need new socks and a couple of new short sleeve tops too might also get my first pair of thighs expect birthday treats

btw who has a birthday right about now? I recall someone saying theirs was a couple of weeks before mine

and how is mrTwink this month? is the recent course over?

fishie · 14/01/2009 21:30

it might have been me - 40 on monday. i bought myself adidas capri tight things which i tried today, really great as didn't ride up and no knee pain in cold. they have a net gusset area

there are many bargains on shorts and summer wear now.

sfxmum · 14/01/2009 21:33

that might have been why I thought of it, 40 on the 3rd, where did the time go

will check out bargains but I need V-necks and most seem to be crew neck not a good look for me

Twink · 14/01/2009 22:19

Thanks for asking sfx, he's at his best at the mo so we've been back to the indoor ski slope today and he's now qualified as a 'recreational' skier which is great.

He's got another week of feeling ok (just having his 5FU 24/7) then a big hit next Tuesday which will wipe him out for 7-10 days but if his white blood cell count stays up he'll finish his final cycle first week of March After that, it's a waiting game to see how quickly the secondary metastases spread but he won't be hanging around waiting for them as we've a family list of things we all want to do!!

TinyWhiteFeather · 15/01/2009 02:48

I loved this article in the Guardian if anyone is interestd. He really spoke on my level. (simple!!)

here

fishie · 15/01/2009 21:18

twink, do hope you have a lovely week.

swf that is a nice article

sfxmum · 16/01/2009 09:13

hi all

Twink as ever in awe of your strength and wishing you all as much family time as possible

TWF is that from the supplement on running? I saved it but am yet to read it

hope all are well, weather for the weekend does not look great but I really need to go out

HarrogateMum · 16/01/2009 12:15

hi all not done a full run for 9 days

But an old colleague who has left to become a personal trainer came out and did a session with me and another girl during our lunch break on Wednesday - had one of us running whilst hte other did squats/lunges/press ups etc then swapped over. Lots of interval training and then one sprinting whilst the other had to go in the plank or do back extensions. It made me realise how running doesnt actually use many of my muscles! I can barely move 2 days later!

TinyWhiteFeather · 16/01/2009 12:47

I think so sfx...I was at work and just took a sneaky peak at the page that was open.

Due a run tonight. I am not actually supposed to run in the evenings unless the children are off school with holidays, so have got to get back into being a good girl.

Must admit cycling is good though. Cycling has developed muscles in my arms HarrogateMum (clinging on for dear life!). But would like to tackle midriff. There is barely room in our house to do sit ups though.

HarrogateMum · 18/01/2009 17:42

Finally forced myself out there today and it was fab - did 4 miles in the sunshine - but v cold and windy. I really enjoyed it which is unusual at the moment!

robino · 18/01/2009 18:22

I managed to get out on tuesday and to run down to our local park this morning to meet OH, the kids and our weekend guests - not far, and a bit too soon after breakfast but better than the absolute nothing I'd have managed otherwise. Glad you enjoyed the run Harrogatemum - it was really nice to get out in the sunshine today.

fishie · 18/01/2009 21:18

i have done 35k in a week

i am telling you about this because it is all downhill (teehee) from here.

sfxmum · 19/01/2009 09:57

happy birthday fishie what do you mean it is all downhill from here?

hello all, bit of a rubbish running week here but managed 3 miles Saturday morning and again yesterday evening, hoping for a better week

hope all are well

fishie · 19/01/2009 10:26

oh because i'll never manage to go out so many times ever again, i had half a week off with childcare.

how do you all manage with water? i'm not bothering atm as not really sweating in this cold. but when it gets hotter i will have to take something and i do hate those little bottles with holes in. there is a public loo and refreshment hut on my longer run but nothign except a pond on my weekday route.

hatwoman · 20/01/2009 20:22

Hi everyone, hope you're all well. I haven;t been around much as we didn;t have broad band at first when we moved - only had mobile access which is excruciatingly slow. I did 11 miles this morning - very slowly. but it was very enjoyable. apart from the icy bits where I had to walk a little or I would have been over on my bum. I'm having a bit more joy finding better routes in my new area. my mum has suggested some real country lanes - still no pavements but hardly any traffic and no lorries or buses, and I've been through Chatsworth which is excellent - no traffic and gravelly paths so no mud. I don;t think, at this time of year I'll have quite the variety I used to have in sw london (which I do find a bit ironic) but in summer it'll be brilliant (assuming the mud eventually dries up).

do any of you run with a dog? I'd quite like to try it but on the ocassions that I've broken into a run when walking him, just to see what happens, he runs right next to me and virtually trips me up.

hatwoman · 20/01/2009 20:25

ooo fishie just seen those magic words - time off work with childcare. how brilliant. that's the definition of luxury once you've had kids isn;t it? freedom for a few hours to do whatever the hell you like without having to take into account other people. just like you used to have all the blumming time pre-kids. I've gone s-e recently and the theory is that I work school hours plus a bit more when I come. but running is eating into my working time and I am feeling guilty. but not much.

Pendulum · 20/01/2009 20:39

Hi everyone, I am on the bench with a bad knee (iliotibial band). Have started a thread asking for advice/ experiences but then thought I should have posted on here!

Am very envious of all the running going on here, and glad you are settling in well hatwoman.

sfxmum · 20/01/2009 21:33

Pendulum I had that injury late last year there are lots of links and advice in this thread which was very helpful to be, basically rest ice elevation, make sure do specific stretches and strenghten quads,
most injuries heal within 3-6 wks

hope that is helpful will look around for more when I g=have more time

Hi all went out again today for a little while, it was very enjoyable

TinyWhiteFeather · 21/01/2009 07:59

I am not running much or for long at the moment, I have been diagnosed with anaemia and a number of other health problems which are really slowing me down.
I am just getting out when I feel up to it and trying to just enjoy being out for the sake of it. and have put other plans on hold.

But at least I know why I was struggling so much and hope by the spring I will be back on track.

Will follow all your poast for continued inspiration though.

No dog experience Hatwoman, but get chased by other peoples from time to time.

Twink · 21/01/2009 09:00

Sorry to hear about the anaemia TWF, but as you say, at least you've got a diagnosis and know why you're not up to (full) speed.

SFX, no direct dog experience here either but quite a few friends run with their dogs, often off the lead (we've got quite a few wide open spaces around here) so perhaps they get used to it, obviously no consolation if you end up tripping over and spraining your ankle though. Another friend does 'canix' racing which as far as I can see, involves wearing a waist harness with the dog attached and doing an off-road event Not quite sure what happens if you can't keep up!

I'm back to the physio later, hopefully a magic wand will be waved and I'll be a genuine member of the thread again. Meanwhile I've been mountain biking, cross training, walking, rowing, summit training, weight training and doing Body Balance but it's not the same! BB is quite bizarre, apologies to any others that do it but I can't help but get the giggles when I'm standing on one leg with the other raised behind me while pretending to be an aeroplane...

TinyWhiteFeather · 21/01/2009 09:04

Lol at BB Twink....
Is it for something specific?

I am walking more, and cycling.

Hope the physio fairy comes up with the goods.

SachaF · 21/01/2009 16:24

What is summit training? [dumb emoticon]

SafferUpNorth · 21/01/2009 17:30

Hi runner-ladies, I'm just dropping in.

I've been running for about eight years, though never toooo seriously. I run 3-4 miles twice to three times a week, and do enjoy little 5km and 10km races like the BUPAs and Races for Life, and the odd bit of trail running (LOVE The Deerstalker near Peebles in the Scottish Borders, www.themightydeerstalker.com)

Anyways, I have a question for you fit people about running in pregnancy: I am just over 15 weeks with my first and still keeping up my regular little trots. But it will become harder, I'm sure...

What are your experiences, when did you give up, or did you manage to do gentle walk-runs to the end?

Twink · 21/01/2009 19:17

Summit trainer = cross between stepper machine and a cross trainer. A strange arrival in the gym last year, I couldn't manage more than about 5 mins to start with, basically the foot plates make you stride upwards instead of along and you have tall handles to pull/push too. Quite why it doesn't hurt my hamstring I don't know..

Howdee Saffer, you're in the right place for advice but I'm not the one to give it as I didn't start running until afterwards. I'm sure one of the others will be along soon though.
