I can't find the old one in Health, and we deserve to be in brand new shiny Sport and exercise anyway

OP posts:
Twink · 30/12/2008 17:21

Forty and 2 months here so even older!

Hoping to test out my hamstring tomorrow as I now only sound like a 20/day habit rather than as if I chainsmoke. Fingers crossed as I'm very ratty when I don't run plus my skinny jeans have an odd lumpiness above the waistband

BlessThisMess · 30/12/2008 18:44

I'm over 40 .... by quite a bit.

44 actually .... (am I the oldest?)

I've been reading in Runner's World magazine today about some 70+ runners, and they can go a lot faster than I can, so who cares anyway!!

Went out for a 2-miler again today as per my training schedule.

BlessThisMess · 30/12/2008 18:44

BTW, Robino - that sucks about the tonsillitis. Hope you get better quickly.

TinyWhiteFeather · 30/12/2008 21:02

40 in august here.....aren't we cool. Have never been so fit, energetic and had so much enthusiasm for life. We ought to give ourselves a 'name'.
Not out today but leg has stopped hurting . Has been hurting just going up and down the stairs so am hoping I have had a miraculous rescovery. (fingers crossed).

Pendulum · 30/12/2008 21:11

hello, please can I join you? I run alone and don't know any other runners in RL so would love some running chat.

I have been doing about 6km x3/ week for the last 6 months (DD2 is 15 months)

Today I did my first run of December

It felt GREAT!! Have just ordered new kit from sheactive sale in a fit of new enthusiasm!

I am in a bit of a rut though and would really love to do my first 10k this year. Any tips on how to ramp up distance after being stuck at a particular point for ages would be appreciated....

sparklyxmasfairy · 30/12/2008 21:16

a name for the sub section on mumsnetters who are over 40 and runnersluverly, but no divisions please

dh says he will go to work late so I can have a morning run at a reasonable morning which is not a frozen crack of dawn
and a definitely running on New years day before bucks fizz and panetone

should really go back to my usual name but toying with the idea of new one instead of really old sfxmum

sparklyxmasfairy · 30/12/2008 21:18

hi pendulum and welcome have you seen sportsshoes they are pretty good with prices

SachaF · 30/12/2008 21:25

Those of you who get Runner's World, does it inspire you or does it make you feel guilty? I was going to get a subscription to help motivate me but dh said it would just depress him as he know's he should be going out running but isn't.
Hi Robino, sounds like we are in similar situations but you are more motivated than me! ds is 2 years (just) and dd is 3 months. How do you manage to get out running with a club? Do you express and dh takes over for the evening? I think it would be a struggle for dh to bath them both and put ds to bed then feed dd - although she is much quicker when it's from a bottle!
Really looking forward to going for a run soon....4 weeks ago I could just about do 2.5 miles - hope I still can!

Pendulum · 30/12/2008 21:29

Thanks sparklyxmasfairy will check them out (maybe with next month's pay following my sheactive purchases!)

sachaF 2.5 miles at 2 months post-natal? You must be superhuman, at that stage I congratulated myself on a walk to the park!

robino · 31/12/2008 10:25

Thanks for the welcome and sympathy! Am on antibiotics now and at least I no longer feel like I'm dying! Out of interest, how long do people leave it to start running again after illness?

Sacha, I'm not sure I'm more motivated but OH has been fantastic. We moved to a new area when DD2 was just 5 weeks old (not something I'd repeat again!) and he was very aware that I had NO friends or family and 2 very young children. I'd said I was thinking about taking up running to get out of the house (looked up the couch to 5k programme and anything) when he spotted some lady runners in our local morrisons car park and chased them down! Turns out it was a local Women's Running Network group and they were starting a beginners course the next week so he forced me to go!

He will be the first to admit it wasn't pleasant, DD2 was 3 months and refused to take a bottle (still won't actually). For 8 weeks the group started at 6.15 so he had two v tired girls to deal with. I fed DD2 just before I went out, he tried offering a bottle/cup, failed and just hunkered down for an hour's crying. He was a star and looked just as frazzled as I usually do at the end of the day . Think it did him good!

It's easier now I'm in the "grown-up group"! It starts at 7 and we can usually have both girls asleep by then (we're lucky to have early sleepers - dd1 has only just graduated from a 6pm self-imposed bed time!).

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 31/12/2008 10:30

I'm 45 [ancient]Please say I don't have the dubious honour of being the oldest MN runner?

How's dh Twink?

SachaF · 31/12/2008 13:16

Ah, we don't get ours down until 8pm, otherwise dh doesn't see them much. I guess I just have to motivate myself to get out with the double buggy. DD does take a bottle. Your DP sounds a star for doing that! It's so nice to have their support for you to be able to do something for yourself.

Pendulum, I was trying to get myself fit fast for an attempt on Scafell Pike whilst FIL was in the country over Xmas - 2 weeks ago we got 3/4 way up but it was way too cold for the toddler (baby snug inside my jacket) and FIL was struggling with the snow. Have had a 2 week break now (and flu) so am raring to go again! It was a big strain though to be that fit so soon - 6 mile walks or 2.5 mile runs at the weekend WITH children....hopefully I can slow it down now and won't get ill again!

Early Happy New Year

Pendulum · 31/12/2008 13:19

Scafell Pike with two children in the snow?

I was right, you ARE superhuman

SachaF · 31/12/2008 13:27

Not superhuman, just a little unhinged... and not wanting to be the weakest link!

Twink · 31/12/2008 14:57

After 4 weeks of this throat/cough thing I tried running on the treadmill this morning - it was horrendous! I know I loathe the things anyway but I managed 20 mins before I thought I was going to be physically sick! Tbh it was only the thought of dh's chemo PB that got me that far

So early NY resolution: get myself back in shape asap!!

Saggars, thanks for asking, he's doing 'ok'. He got the go-ahead for another 3 cycles of chemo (which is a good thing obviously but a real strain physically & emotionally) and started cycle 4 yesterday so is feeling particularly grim today but I imagine he'll be down to the gym by Friday - and will only leave it that long because it's shut on Thursday!
Did I mention that we're all learning to ski ? It was on our family list of 'things to do while we still can' so have had a couple of lessons at a Snowdome place. We went on Monday & it was fab, he really enjoyed it and it's starting to click for him. Hopefully, if the chemo schedule can stay on track we might be able to do some 'real' skiing at Easter if I can get a last minute booking.

OrmIrian · 31/12/2008 15:01

Oy saggar! You are (just) older than me!! Yay.

sfxmum · 31/12/2008 16:53

back to nor normal name and no more fairy business

sasha I think whatever keeps you going really

robino and all other not feeling well I hope you feel better soon
good to have a dh who is a helpful and supportive, would include mine in that thankfully

twink hope the chemo is kinder than expected and you do get the Easter break you hope for

will go running in the morning just before the late breakfast no matter how short it is a nice start

happy new year everyone

TinyWhiteFeather · 31/12/2008 19:28

Wow Twink, you guys are amazing..will keep something crossed for your easter break.

Sfx.. I am really hoping to get out on a run tomorrow, and start as I mean to go on.
Managed to get out today and am still surprised that my leg has healed so suddenly. Not complaining though.

Happy and bright New Year to all and hope you all achieve what you hope to.

SachaF · 01/01/2009 15:29

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Dh and I saw it in properly today with a run round the park and down by the river, 2.5 miles, really chuffed (although dh was pushing the double buggy and said he could easily go further!) and then ds got to have a short play in the playground before a KFC reward!

Now chilling - both dc's slept badly last night.

Hope you had a nice run SFX and that you got out TWF, and well done Twink - not a fan of running machines either. 20 mins is very respectible.

BlessThisMess · 01/01/2009 17:10

Happy New Year to you all - I have been dressed in my running clothes all day long (clean, I might add ) but haven't run!

I struggled today with getting the right timing - not too soon after eating a little something but not so long after that I'm hungry again (and taking the risk of going weak/wobbly if I run). I kept missing the 'window' by being busy with kids/cleaning/tidying/starting to take down decorations/other 'stuff'.

Ah well, there's always tomorrow

dreamingofagreenlawnchristmas · 01/01/2009 18:16

Hi, I've just been for my first proper run after c-section 12 weeks ago (ds3) and feeling in need of some encouragement! Please be nice I'm feeling pretty discouraged!

I was a regular runner till this pregnancy, used to go for a couple of short runs every week plus a long run (10 miles) at the weekend - but this pregnancy I just didn't have the energy, plus ended up with a very much unwanted c-section. As a result I'm 2 stone overweight and feeling very wobbly and out of shape.

Just managed my first run (have been walking/jogging up to now) - and the first 10 minutes I honestly thought I was going to die. I did manage to jog on for 3 miles but everything was wobbling, legs were aching (though breathing was OK - I could still talk fine).

Please tell me this gets better? I never had this with my other pregnancies and feel like its going to be a real uphill battle this time

sfxmum · 01/01/2009 19:36

hello all

well 12 wks after C-section going for 3 miles is quite good imho just keep going

I did manage a little slow 3 miles before a brunch, we got up just after 9am so while dh got dd entertained I went out, wasn't that cold and it quiet and lovely wit just some rowers runners and dog walkers

will probably do the same tomorrow

mrsmike · 01/01/2009 22:20

Hello
Can I join this thread? Started running last May with local club beginners group and doing 10 mile race on sunday Just will be glad to finish really, especially as its "undulating".
I am 47 so totally ancient - but in our club there are many many in their 50s, 60s and 70s so I feel relatively sprightly in comparison.

hatwoman · 01/01/2009 23:28

blessthismess - I seem to have been doing that all christmas. one day I put my (clean) kit on, then did various home and kid-related stuff - which included making gingerbread. by the time I;d finished my kit was so filthy I couldn't bring myself to wear it for a run the next day.

mrsmike - good luck with your race. my first race was 8 miles and I loved it. I was on such a high from finishing it was brilliant. I've done about 4 more since - including longer ones, but have never captured that first race moment again. makes me feel a bit

TinyWhiteFeather · 02/01/2009 07:37

May get out later after H gets back from work.
I think you are doing brilliantly Dreaming. I think it will suddenly click back into place for you, so just persevere.
I am thinking of doing a workout on days I don't get out to run, but we don't have much room. Any exercise suggestions? But nothing that bulks up thighs as they are already somewhat muscley. (could loan them to the MOD as a deadly weapon lol).
