I can't find the old one in Health, and we deserve to be in brand new shiny Sport and exercise anyway

Robino - welcome, I'm still a beginner too - can only do 3 miles so far but have signed up for a 10k on 22 Feb so have 8 weeks to get fit.

I took my new Garmin out for a walk a couple of days ago with the instruction booklet to start to figure out how it works, and plan to do my first run with it this afternoon.

hatwoman · 28/12/2008 16:15

I forgot my other kit-related question...how do you avoid VPLs in running gear? or are they just an inescapable reality? or am I gob-smackingly vain to even think about it? in my defence I only think about it on the days I run from the school gate - ie do drop off in kit...I don't look great in running gear anyway but sometimes the VPL really is the icing on the cake

robino · 28/12/2008 17:57

Hatwoman - I was wondering this too. And I'm not usually vain... It was only after last week's run when my knicker elastic went about 200 yards into a 3 miler !

just quickly posting to get my name back on this thread

Did a little 2 mile run with my Garmin thingy this afternoon. If I go by the heart rate zones that GoodrunGuide gives me, I've been trying to go too fast normally! It suggested my easy run should be at 130-140bpm, which I can reach at a brisk walk, and when I run at the pace I normally do my heart rate was 160bpm, which should be my tempo/interval pace! No wonder I've been finding it quite hard work! But then the SmartCoach thing from Runner's World suggests that to train for my 10k in 8 weeks' time I should start by doing an 'easy' 2 miles at a 12:40 minute/mile pace, which will not be in my 'easy' heart-rate zone, but faster I think.

Anyway, it was interesting that thinking about all the technology/numbers side of it meant I wasn't running along wishing I could stop, which is a bonus!

fishie · 28/12/2008 22:28

hatwoman: bra comes into shower with me all else goes in wash. i'd reuse if there were layers but only wear one, thicker or thinner.

swf: i started running properly because i got promoted and it was rather stressful. am a far more calm and sensible person with it so do carry one.

ambercat: well done on your race.

Twink · 28/12/2008 22:30

Been in Mumsnet-void for days plus had the cough/throat thing for 3.5 weeks so far so have been sticking to the xtrainer in the gym

As for VPL, I am totally sad, sorry, but I either wear a string or my Odlo knickers which are super-smooth. Bodyglide is a wonderful invention...

MarshaBrady · 28/12/2008 22:34

I have been terrible for last couple of weeks and haven't been running.

I am going for a run tomorrow.

Twink · 28/12/2008 22:36

Just read back a little: Ambercat, great result!

I sweat for England so my kit goes straight into the wash pile, Dh is even stinkier than me so we have a dark sports wash, a pale sports wash, a sports towels wash and the usual clothes dark/light/pink ones. Occasionally I remember to wash sheets and ordinary towels..

hatwoman · 29/12/2008 09:23

hat winces at the idea of running in a string...the memory of horse riding in one about 10 years ago still hasn;t faded.

JJ · 29/12/2008 10:00

You are all so good, so I feel silly posting this as I am slow and don't go all that far.

Anyway.. I want to do a sprint triathlon in the summer. Has anyone done one? How do you train? I can run 5k pretty easily, albeit very slowly, and I can swim 750m but it'd have to be breast stroke which is not ideal and I'd imagine would be embarrassing and can do the ride. But not all together. I definitely need some help on my front crawl swimming technique but what else? And how?

I don't wear fresh kit everytime. The allowed stinkiness level depends on what I'm doing afterwards - if I go for coffee with my jogging partner then less stinky and if it's just me, then anything up to the point where I pass out from the fumes is fine.

cocolepew · 29/12/2008 10:17

Ok running ladies HELP!

I've just took up running and at the moment can't run more than 2 miles . I'd got a pair of New Balance trainers but have recently changed to Nike which I prefer.

The thing is my heel is sore.

It's at the very back but still under my foot. It's sore if I start to walk after sitting or lying and it will walk out eventually. My Dad runs and insists I need insoles, but my Nikes are snug and I don't think they would take any. When I run it's not sore and if I'm wearing trainers it's fine. Only if my foot is flat.

Does anybody think I have injured it running (very, very slowly!).

OrmIrian · 29/12/2008 10:21

Don't know coco. Could it be that you have trapped a nerve somehow? I find that new running shoes tend to play havoc for a few weeks. Have you tried massaging the tender spot?

Well done ambercat!

cocolepew · 29/12/2008 10:36

I don't think so OrmIrian, because it comes and goes. I think I was maybe running too flat footed to start. I'm getting on better with the new shoes.

JJ · 29/12/2008 15:26

coco, is it plantar fasciitis maybe? I had that and rest and stretching helped it go away. Good luck, it was really painful for me, especially in the morning.

cocolepew · 29/12/2008 15:38

JJ you genius! That sounds exactly like it! My Dad had said I should start running at our park, so I'd be running on softer ground, but I can't be bothered getting in the car to get there . I'll stick to wearing my trainers for a while. Thanks again .

MarshaBrady · 29/12/2008 19:15

Went for the run today, tally ho. Going to go again tomorrow - makes firm decision.

JJ · 29/12/2008 20:53

Oh good coco (well, not good, but you know what I mean!). Hope it gets better soon. Do the stretches if you get a chance and see if they help. They keep it at bay for me.

I have not gone out for over a week. Am eating for England too, so I might just roll around the park next time I go.

cocolepew · 29/12/2008 21:08

I stretched before and after my run tonight (ran further tonight ) and used a support bandage on my ankle, so fingers crossed it'll help.

The only thing I dislike about running is it makes me hungry

TinyWhiteFeather · 29/12/2008 22:03

VPL....don't wear any?.

Am doing really badly at the moment. I am struggling with my right leg and thinking of going back to basics as I couldn't bear to stop altogether. I keep getting sciatic pain which I really don't need. Will try to cycle more so at least I am getting the exercise.
Can't offer any advice sorry coco, but others advice sounds good.

Hi to new names....

robino · 30/12/2008 10:31

Typical! Sign up for encouragement then come down with tonsillitis...

TinyWhiteFeather · 30/12/2008 11:28

When I took up running again I was comfortable in a size 22. Went into shop yesterday to get a reflective top and they didn't have any out. The assistant (who was lovely) looked me up and down and said she would fetch me one and that I would probably need a small size.....!!! I could have hugged her.

Hope you feel better soon Robino.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 30/12/2008 11:35
