I can't find the old one in Health, and we deserve to be in brand new shiny Sport and exercise anyway

Ooo how exciting.

Shall we all introduce ourselves?

I've been running (or jogging ) for about 10 years now. Hated it pre kids but found it the best exercise when I was time-poor and got slightly addicted. Am currently sidelined due to recurring nose-bleeds but am ticking over on a couple of 30 minutes runs on the roads and some gym-work. My fave distance is 5 miles, enough to get past that first 10 minutes of 'WTF am I doing out in the cold/wind/rain' but short enough that my aged limbs don't just give way under me.

Wallace · 01/11/2008 19:27

Hello Saggar, nice to meet you

I'e been running (I never jog, OK?) for almost 18 months now. I'm not sure what my favourite distance is yet. I did my first Half Marathon a couple of weeks ago and it was fantastic - I'm planning another one in MArch.

I joined a running club in April which has benefitted my running so much. I started with the beginners nights, then in the summer started going to the normal training sessions which includes interals, hills, fartlek etc. Also I have made some good friends Unfortunately it has stopped for the winter

I've decided my goal for the winter is to knock 3 minutes off my 5k time by April And at the same time keep my long runs going to be ready for the half in March.

As you can tell by the amount I have to say, I am rather addicted to running

Right, I am signing myself in. Not a runner yet, but have got a place on a charity 10k next June and am really looking forward to starting training for it. Had my first baby in September and want to be a healthy active mum, so I can live long and also encourage an active lifestyle with my son - I am naturally a lazy arse and tbh it's done me no favours!

So, my plan is:

visit proper running shop for good trainers
plan some routes
get running!

slackrunner · 01/11/2008 19:31

Hello - can I join too please?

My name is slackrunner and I'm also addicted to running

I've been running for two years now, have done a few halfs and 10Ks. I joined a running club this summer and love it, it is very geeky (lots of congregating in pub car parks looking very dodgy waiting for the others to turn up) but at least we're sleek geeks .

I've got a stinking cough at the moment so have had to take time out and it's driving me mad. I want to be better!

Hello cyteen and slackrunner. Welcome to the MN running club

MrsWednesday · 01/11/2008 19:49

Another joiner here too if that's ok. Would love the chance to talk running as I've bored everyone else I know about it

Have done one half and a few ten 10Ks and have signed up for another half in February - need to have a reason to keep going out through the winter when it's dark and cold.

I'm also toying with the idea of joining a running club - it sounds like those who have recommend it?

slackrunner · 01/11/2008 19:53

Thanks for the welcome

MrsW - I love running club. I push myself far harder when I have a group to run with, and it's really nice to feel that you're improving. The first week I ran with the 'moderate' paced group I thought I was hallucinating and was about to pass out, now it's hard work but very do-able.

Go for it

Lapsedrunner · 01/11/2008 19:54

I'm going to slide in here..in spirit more than body.

Lapsedrunner · 01/11/2008 19:56

Mrs Wednesday - join a running club, you will love it. Took me about 2 yers to pluck up the courage and was the best thing I ever did....that was about 12 years ago....now unfit, old and injured but hey, I enjoyed it whilst it lasted!

My aging hip is proving resistant to my plans to get back into running but I live in hope , I still stagger round orienteering competiitons sometimes and recently "nordic walked" an 8K

I'd like to join a running club but have never had the nerve. I run offroad with my dog. usually only about four miles, occasionally seven or eight. I've run the odd half marathon and 10 races.

Swedes · 01/11/2008 20:15

OMG Threadworm you are a fitty. I now fancy your bod as well as your mind.

I'm going to start running again. I used to be superfit and ran 4 times a week (plus other exercise) but now I'm super-post-natal-flabbiesque. Please may I join you all?

Lapsedrunner · 01/11/2008 20:31

dittany - that "thing" looks interesting.

Threadworm - join a club, you won't regret it (says she, who has not been a club member for xxxx years!). I held off for about 2 years as thougth I would not be fit enough, only to find all shaoes, sizes and ages running .

Threadworrm · 01/11/2008 21:00

Yes. Will try to make myself join club. Is best way to improve. But involves running in dark on pavements.

Swedes, don't you swim about 100 miles a week? You must be fit already.

babyinacorner · 01/11/2008 21:28

Hi Everyone - can I join too. I started running about a week ago. I'm doing the couch potato to 5k in two months plan! (where you do the walking/running thing, gradually increasing the running side of things)

Somebody please tell me it gets easier?!!At the moment 60seconds of running feels like hard work!

MrsSanta · 01/11/2008 21:36

How long does it take for an unfit/overweight 37 year old flabby belly to run more than the lengh of my car without having a stich.
On a serious note i would love to run and just need the push.

futurity · 01/11/2008 21:42

hi.can i join?been running for 2 and half years.done 2 race for lifes and 2 weeks ago did first 10k.am now building up my long weekend run by half mile each week.today did 7 and a half miles :-)

for you more experienced runners..is that the right way to build up mileage? I do three miles two to three times during the week but time restraints stop me going further so am only increasing the weekend run and am wondering if that is ok?

jasmeeen · 01/11/2008 21:45

hi babyinacorner,

I'm just coming to the end of week four of couch to 5k and yes, it does get easier! And I am overweight and very unfit (trying to improve). Never thought I would get to grips with people seeing me run outside but now, gasp..., I miss it when I don't do it and I don't feel embarassed about other people seeing me.

MrsWednesday · 01/11/2008 21:49

Thanks for the motivating words, will stop making excuses and join the club. I've recently lost my running partner as she's had to stop for various reasons and it is really hard to go on my own.

It definitely gets easier BIAC. Can you sign up for a 5k run to give you something to aim for? You can usually find something on the Runner's World website

MrsWednesday · 01/11/2008 21:51

Oh and futurity, that's just what I did when I was training for a half marathon - short runs during the week and increased the mileage steadily on my long run on the weekend. 7 1/2 miles is v impressive!

futurity · 01/11/2008 21:58

:-) thanks...i was very pleased with it.adding half mile every weekend seems an achievable goal.i have signed up for bupa london 10k next may which i am so excited about as is my first london run. I am then aiming for the royal parks half marathon next october so taking it all slow in building up but gives me something to aim for.
