I can't find the old one in Health, and we deserve to be in brand new shiny Sport and exercise anyway

OP posts:

I wear loose tracky bottoms and a big shapeless hoody so I look my least attractive...my mum worries as I run after tea sometimes (dark). It is a really well lit busy road but if it gives her peace of mind, it is no problem.

Gloves that come off after about 5 minutes, as with hat. Try not to stop running as I peel layers off. Highly entertaining, as I put my water bottle in my pocket and its weight starts to pull my trousers down. I will not stop running though!

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 03/11/2008 21:32

swedes - could you wear a huge tubigrip over your scar? I have a double thickness hip-sized piece of tubigrip to help keep my sacroliliac joints attached, it looks ridiculous but the support is good. My physio gave it to me during my last pregnancy.

I ran a measly and absurdly slow mile today. And it hurt. I'm not impressed.

OrmIrian · 04/11/2008 08:21

OK. Help please! I need a piece of basic running advice since I'm back to square one . My pathetic little 3 miler on Sunday morning has left me with burning calf muscles - am hobbling around like an old woman. I planned to run tonight. Is it better the ignore the aches and just get on with it, or pander to them and do nowt?

sfxmum · 04/11/2008 08:37

how is the stretching? I ache more if I don't wind down and stretch properly, actually including some pilates during the week helps, also after longish run a good soak?

btw do any of you use HRM? was thinking of getting a basic one

KT1983 · 04/11/2008 09:33

Hi OrmIrian,

I would rest really - its your muscles way of repairing when they are sore.
Try massaging them out a bit & stretching ( Foot on a step/stair & push the heel down into the floor )

Sometimes exercise will help ease them off a bit....but you have to strecth them afterwards. Perhaps try a walk instead of a run & give them a good stretch when done.

hope that helps

OrmIrian · 04/11/2008 09:37

Thanks KT - I walked to work and back every day last week. And again yesterday. About 3 miles. So I thought it would have eased me back into it. But obviously not. I am totally disgusted with my body - I give it a few months off and it does this to me! I am thinking of asking for a refund .

I might perhaps try a leeetle run. Just round the park....... and give it some good stretches afterwards.

KT1983 · 04/11/2008 09:41

Just take it easy.
I know how frustrating muscle soreness can be if you just want to get on with something!

I taught a Body combat class yesterday for the first time in a few weeks....My upperbody is in bits today!!

OrmIrian · 04/11/2008 09:42

Will do, thanks.

dillinger · 04/11/2008 10:11

So we briefly touched on hills last night, I enjoyed it all and was so good to get out!

Threadworrm · 04/11/2008 11:53

OrmIrian. was it you who had a plaster cast on a leg recently? I think your three-miler is far from pathetic -- its brill.

I don't think you'd do yourself much harm if you ran with aching muscles. I'd say go only if it would make you feel happy to go. Stretch first, take it really gently: just enjoy the fresh air and abandon any thought of targets.

Panfriedpumpkin · 04/11/2008 12:02

Wow! So it actually happened then?! A whole new section.

intros - Pan, male, pretty fit doing biking (to work often), running, free weights, a bit of swimming (before work on days I don't bike). Do have an exercise teaching qualification, but this was years ago.

OrmIrian · 04/11/2008 12:07

Thanks thread! Yep it was me. The old cripple

It would make me very happy to go. The aches disappear quite quickly when I start walking - it's just when I first start. Caused much amusement at work yesterday getting up out of my chair.

mou · 04/11/2008 13:30

You are doing brill Orm, I find tubigrip on achy muscles helps, and just walk/slow your pace right down until your body is ready. I gave myself shinsplints earlier in the year F THEY ARE PAINFULL!.

Just done my favourite run in reverse, it has a huge hill at the beginning this way so I don't often do it as it messes my muscles up to start with but it was fabulous , down over moors and through a plantation in six inches of mud!! did some rather entertaining mud skiing.

I wind down by walking the last 1/4 mile as the minute I get through the door I am in mum mode again, (don't even get to shower alone).

MatBackFeck · 04/11/2008 13:37

Hi can I join you?

I am also another post-kids running convert (ok I'm not that fast but it does annoy me when my DP says I've gone out jogging!). Having never run before, I started about 9m ago as part of post baby flab losing initiative and have found it great - for losing the weight and also for stress levels. I train with a friend and we are registered for the London Marathon next year (eeek, nothing like throwing yourself in at the deep end!). We are not really sure what we are doing re: training plans etc but are now up to going out 3 times a week (about the max we can manage with childcare isses) and do either 6 or 7 miles each time. We've done 1 10K and looking for a half marathon around Feb to do.

That's about it, would appreciate any advice.

Twink · 04/11/2008 13:55

Hi new people!

Orm, take it steady if you do decide to go out today, tomorrow might be better (says she with a knackered hamstring and calf and fully intending to go out later)

Mat check out Runners World Events to find races near you. There are half marathons all around the country in Feb so you're sure to find something local.

As long as you have decent socks (eg Thorlos, Falke - expensive but last years) it doesn't matter if your trainers aren't waterproof. It's better that they aren't as they let water OUT whereas Goretex ones don't and you end up sloshing around. The socks are wicking so you honestly don't notice that your feet are wet and as they're not cotton you don't get blisters.

OrmIrian · 04/11/2008 14:02

Thankyou twink.

Can't do tomorrow or Thurs. That's the problem. Glad I'm not the only one

MissChief · 04/11/2008 16:16

impressed by you all, London marathon? Respect! I made it to 1 hr today, 1st time ever in 2 mths of running, not sure exactly how long I did - 6 or 7 miles but was pretty chuffed! I'm not particularlry fast though and am wondering if I'm up to doing a 10k, all sounds a bit serious though would like the target to work towards. I also struggle with what to wear int he rain (hard ot get out if you avoid it!). Finally tracked down a fetching cagoule from Amazon. My trainers (asics) aren't waterproof either but i manage ok just bit soaked at the end of the run.

notyummy · 04/11/2008 16:34

You will be fine in a 10k if you can run 6/7 miles because 10 k is 6.25 miles! If you can do 7 miles in an hour then you can do a respectable 10k time.

MissChief · 04/11/2008 17:02

thanks, I know the distance but it's the "race" element not so sure of! I am slow. Wondering about joining a running club, anyone else in one? It's keeping on going by oneslef wihch i sometimes find difficult. Otoh, nice to have quiet time too.

rolandbrowning · 04/11/2008 17:35

Hi can I join? I have a 21 week old ds and was running up to aboit 16 wks pg. I have made a couple of attempts at getting back into it, but I think I am finally ready and I am starting the couch potato to 5k tomorrow, I think it's best to ease gradually back into it!

Before getting pg I had done a couple of race for life 5ks, and I will be entering the great Manchester run. Can't wait!

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 04/11/2008 19:02

MissChief - it depends on the seriousness of the race but if you can do 10k in an hour you generally won't be last.

mou - your run reminds me of a race series I did a couple of years ago. Was just 3 local charity 5kms but the course was sooo off-road it was unbelievable! We christened it the Swishy-Swashy , remember Twink

It's great to see loads of new faces here. I'm because I'm not really getting out much.

OrmIrian · 04/11/2008 19:52

3 miles again. Much much easier re breathing and stamina. But my legs are agony. Still....I will beat this and get back to 8 miles. I will I will I will

sfxmum · 04/11/2008 20:27

this has grown lovely to see so many and inspiring ones at that, hope to do at least 4 miles tomorrow and start increasing my average this month

fishie · 04/11/2008 20:49

i tried to go swimming earlier but the hot water in showers was broken so i cravenly gave up. it is a 20min walk from pool and all the way home was thinking shall i run in dark/it is scary/must have exercise/have to go without glasses on/need to do something/will be murdered.

didn't go and feel bad now.

Cadix · 04/11/2008 21:25

I feel so inadequate! 7/8 miles?
Tomorrow I will be doing session 2 of my couch-5K. Still on the Run 1 min Walk 2 min x 6

I went out on monday wearing trainers, my jeans and a fleece as I wanted to be inconspicuous! Might progress to ronhills tomorrow.

I just googled the Great Manchester Run Rolandbrowning and I think I could aim for that too - am I being realistic as a newbie runner?
