Active for Life Session

10 min on the bike, warm up. Chest fly, lat pull, triceps pull. Very difficult to access a machine this morning.

45 minute Senior Flex class: some cardio, a lot of upper body and abdominal work using 3.7 weights. Had hoped to be able to raise the weight by now, but even the instructor is only using two 3.7 kg.

Today was 10m tabata, 10m yoga stretching, 20m weighted vest walk.

I thought of another benefit of consistency @Buntyforgirlsless joint pain and improved mobility, used to get nagging discomfort walking up and down stairs and would huff and puff when I bent down to pick things up - much much better now though!

MummyInTheNecropolis · 17/05/2026 22:17

Yoga (10 mins)
3k run
Loads of walking
Caroline Girvan shoulder workout (35 mins)

Two minute treadmill warm-up followed by 3 sets of 26kg leg curls - 10,10 and 12.

45 minute Musical Theatre Fitness class followed by 30 minute Stretch class.

Very stiff - probably because I had to miss my workouts on Sunday and Monday.

Pilates and restorative yoga for me, today.
Busy work day tomorrow so not sure how much exercise from class or gym, but will be on my feet all day for sure.

BezMills · 20/05/2026 07:15

Well done everybody, smashing it this week.

I did BodyCombat Cardio Combat with lovely Anna Sensei yesterday. Had a couple of random men join in. One was your typical pretty fit 50s gym bloke who fancied giving it a go for the lols. The other was a slightly overweight guy who was clearly there to keep an eye on his wife his wife company (training fully covered head to toe and hair covered). Hopefully see them both next week! Other notable participants was the young ND woman with her support dog sitting quietly on a blankie in the corner, a couple of yogics from the prior class and the yoga instructor herself, and one of the old crew who I haven't seen since I was teaching almost 3 years ago.

Anna is such a great teacher and it's no accident her class has gone from 0 to pretty much full almost immediately. Hopefully we'll get a few more of the old BC diaspora coming in the next weeks.

I had 10 at Boxercise on Monday, same as last week. It's a decent number, but a little down from the crowds from Q1. As long as I get 10 tickets a week I cover my expense, and I'm getting about 16 total at the moment, so it's probably time for a bit of advertising to fluff up the numbers before the summer as usual wrecks attendance!

Overall I'm really happy with how the class is going, we have such a great crew. NGL it's a big commitment - I literally only have Friday night free and that's family time - so it's hard to find the time for my own training. I've gone back to basics since 2 weeks past Monday. I decided that I really need to lose this winter fluff more than anything and so it's more about diet and routine at the moment.

It's just about time to get in the sea (got a big swim on 1st August that I cried off last year due to lack of training and inability to fit into my fast wetsuit). I was sat in the sauna a few weeks ago with a really interesting woman who had done iron man triathlon - and you would not assume that looking at her. She said to me if you have to turn up half-trained and swim it in your aldi wetsuit then that's what you bloody do. She had such a great can-do attitude - it really resonated.

I realised I binned off a swim I could have done, just because the conditions weren't great. I could still have pulled on my scruffy old aldi wetsuit and done it breast stroke, but it was an ego thing. I wanted my go-faster fancy wetsuit and I wanted front crawl and I wanted 'quite fast'. Well those weren't available so I quit!

Yes I had exactly let 'perfect' become the enemy of 'good', which is something I would always say "don't do that!"

So I don't have time to go to the gym every day (boo hoo), I can't justify going to crossfit multiple times a week. But yanno what, I'm going to keep on with my nutrition, I've got BodyCombat and I'm going to get some swimming done, because I am bloody turning up and I am bloody swimming on 1st August no matter what shape I'm in or what wetsuit I can fit in!

It would probably be just as effective!

WearyAuldWumman · 20/05/2026 21:16

Did a 2 minute warm-up on the treadmill and then used the abductor and adductor machines. Nearly forgot to stretch - remembered when I felt my muscles hurting on the first attempt.

Senior Flex, 45 minutes - lot of upper body work using 3.7 kg weights. RDL going into row, and then into OHP. Quite a bit of cardio plus leg work and stretches.

Active for Life, 1 hr. 20 minutes on the bike, side raises and biceps curls - but only 6kg weights.

George who volunteers at the Wed Senior Flex and who now runs the Friday Senior Flex has now been given permission to start a beginners running group at the gym.

He's not getting as much leeway, from what I can gather. I think it's to be a 6 week block of two sessions a week, basically couch to 5 km.

I've said I'll give it a go on the understanding that I can drop out if I can't manage - not sure how the knees and ankles will hold up. I figure that even if I just walk round the running track that it'll do me some good.

The end goal is now supposedly the Glenrothes Park Run which I'm not really keen on. I suspect that Fife Leisure wants the publicity.

I'm already using a pair of those elasticated knee supports but I still feel a bit of strain on the right knee when I get up to 7.4 km p h. (7.3 is okay, for some reason.) I also need an ankle support for the right leg, I reckon.

It's £20 for the full block of sessions, so I think I'll go for it.

I've sent off for running shoes which are supposedly more cushioned at the toes in the hope that they'll help. I might be mad, but I figure that I don't try then I'll never run again, whereas if do try I might manage it - a bit like the Pilates, the Body Balance and the Musical Theatre Fitness.

BTW, knee pads are a game changer for getting down to the mat.

6.5km walk
Cardio dance workout 20 mins
Long dog walk with a friend
Hamstring workout with weights 35 mins

25,200 steps

Comtesse · 21/05/2026 10:30

Out on the beers tonight so did my 20 min cheesy 80s walking video this morning to get in there early.

WearyAuldWumman · 21/05/2026 14:58

45 minute Musical Theatre Fitness class - a lot of cardio, one set of specific arm work.

Chest fly, 3 sets. Moved up to 26 kgs. (Accidentally tried 31 kgs at first - hadn't noticed that the "inbetweeny" weights had been added. Could hardly budge and thought my arms were going to come out of the sockets!)

Tried the assisted pull-up machine...Gave up. Shall try to get assistance from a member of the gym staff next time. (He was showing a new member round at the time.). Thought I had it figured out, but the clunk told me otherwise.
