Hi all, just setting up a second thread - I hope you don’t mind @Jumbojem but the other one was getting a bit close to ending…

Sorry to keep harping on about the weather but it’s still raining up here so instead of running this morning I’m going to get back on my lovely water rowing machine which I’ve neglected totally since starting running back in Jan/Feb. I miss it (and I miss the muscle toning it gave me) so I’m going to get back on this morning for a change.

Might do parkrun tomorrow or a longer run, haven’t yet decided.

I think you deserve that beer @Whataninterestinglookingpotato!

So I ran DD’s school 6km tonight with DD, DH and DS. Think my official time was 34:51 which I’m happy with given I took a slight detour into a car park and I didn’t know the route which I don’t really like - I prefer to have the route mapped out completely in my head when I run.

It’s been dry and warm today but not too sunny and there was a slight breeze so it was actually really nice weather for running. Normally they’d do chip butties after these school fun runs but the nearest chippy to the school has shut (!) so we had ice lollies and goodie bags with water, sweets and a flapjack. And a medal which DS’s school doesn’t do so we’re all happy with that. DD wants to wear hers into school tomorrow 😅

Well done @Sparticle for your 6k run today. I don't know what it's like where you are but it's 29C here today, so even more well done for doing it in the heat!

I had good intentions to go out to track tonight but decided I wouldn't do so well in the heat, so l'm going for an early run tomorrow before work instead.

BogRollBOGOF · 30/06/2025 22:58

I'm so glad today was a recovery day. Zero guilt about doing no exercise Grin

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 01/07/2025 05:13

Well done @Sparticle that sounds like a lovely event and a good time too!

Sparticle · 01/07/2025 08:31

I’ve just seen the results and it was actually 35:51 which isn’t quite as good - I could’ve sworn I got in under 35 mins 😂
It’s only due to be 19 with rain up here today. Hopefully all of you in a heatwave are coping!

Still a good time for 6k @Sparticle
it was a sticky night here last night. Today it’s helping dd1 move day take 2. Then home to splash about in the pool. It’s getting cooler here tomorrow and will be down to about 23 which will be nicer to work in.

hoping to go trail running tonight with the running club if I haven’t melted by then!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 01/07/2025 09:33

Nice one @Sparticle despite the lack of chip butties.

I have a day off today so am winding myself up to go out for a run, conscious that the longer I procrastinate the hotter it will be...

I just did a 20 minute yoga with Adriene video in my bedroom. Although I've never done a hot yoga class I feel as though I have now.

RunningInto · 01/07/2025 17:27

First run (7k) after a week out of action with a virus but we’ve on hols so it was an early one along a river path to beat the worst of the heat wave. Followed by a hike across a green ski hill (got gondola lift down phew) and then swam a km in the pool. I’m pooped now hiding from the hot weather hoping a thunderstorm breaks the temp again like last night.

BogRollBOGOF · 01/07/2025 17:51

Circuits class today. It was a slog! Besides the humidity (it's outdoor bootcamp) I raced at the weekend and am still recovering. Moving smoothly, but just no muscle stamina in the tank.

New focus is 5k for a little while as a bit of a break, and it's a bit more heat-friendly.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 01/07/2025 21:04

I wanted to go trail running with the running club tonight but have been helping dd1 move into her new uni accommodation and it all took longer than expected as the place was a complete mess and we had to get the landlord round etc. hey ho. Hopefully it’ll all be sorted now.

by the time I got home it was too late so I just took myself off for a just over 5k run down the lanes near my house. It was nice. Jumped straight in the pool with my running stuff on when i got back!

SoapCollector · 01/07/2025 22:03

Cooler here today so I got out jogging. I'm now managing to cover 5k in distance as a walk/run, but still can't seem to run a full 30mins none stop! 😬 So I'm still stuck on week 9 of couch to 5 k, but enjoying the occasional run/walk parkrun! A bit frustrating, but I guess I'll get there eventually, when I find a route with no hills 😂

Fizbosshoes · 01/07/2025 22:14

My quads are still crying from Sunday so having a(nother) lazy day, but it definitely feels cooler this eve, thank god so will hopefully do an easy run tomorrow

Sparticle · 01/07/2025 22:36

I've had to work late to get a bit of my project finished so haven’t been out tonight. Non-working day tomorrow so will get out hopefully in the morning :)

Hills will make it much harder than flat.

One of the early races I did was a trail race with substantial inclines. It was a two-lapper and it was good for me to see that even the fast, wiry club runners at the front would power walk the steepest bits to conserve energy.

Is there a parkrun near you? Having other runners around really helps with the mental side of keeping momentum.

NormaMajors1992coat · 02/07/2025 09:03

Week 10 of C210K done, a repeat of the previous 5x 10 min runs with walks between. I went 750m further in the time and did the first 5k 1.23 faster, so calling that a win. Maybe I have moved from a shuffle to more of a trudge 💪
(I am staying with my parents this week and it is flatter here but then again slower because I don’t know where I’m going and keep having to check the map 🤦‍♀️)

Like you @SoapCollector I haven’t run 5k without stopping yet but who cares, it’ll come one day.

DS was aghast to discover that I listen to radio drama or audio books when running and found a playlist for me instead, which I remembered towards the end and he is right, music is good motivation. I thought I wouldn’t like it but will definitely try that from the start in future.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 02/07/2025 10:00

@SoapCollector hills make it harder but they are good for you long term. Where I live is really hilly and you can’t manage a 5k with no hills.

just keep going. One day you’ll realise the hills that were so hard before have got much easier.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 02/07/2025 10:06

Hi everyone. I have mainly lurked on the other thread but have been running semi regularly.

I have signed up to run a tough 10 miler at the end of September. I did it last year and swore never again, but then as soon as I got the email saying entries were open for this year I signed up again. Last year I started training in July and managed 67km in the whole month, so this year I am aiming to beat 67km in July. I did my first 5km this morning at 7:30 before it got too hot.

I need to do more hill work this year. Where I live is very flat but in the race there is a massive hill that carries on for about 3km.

I also need to do some pelvic floor exercises and better manage my water intake this year, because last year having a very full bladder bouncing on my less than two years postpartum pelvic floor was, er, very not good.

Sparticle · 02/07/2025 10:55

Welcome @MissScarletInTheBallroom! I’m also planning to run a 10 mile race but the end of August which I’ve just realised is only next month 😱

I’ve just got back from a 45min run, just under 7km so slower than normal but I wore my trail shoes and tried to stay as off-road as possible. Given it rained heavily overnight night it was actually quite fun!

Off to see Elbow in Manchester tonight. Can’t wait ☺️

@SoapCollector keep going your get there. Took me 6months to run non-stop 5k when I restarted C25K - in the 18mths before I’d got up to HM distance but illness/injury/age stopped me. Everyone’s body is different, I still regularly stop after 2.5k do some stretches sometimes walk a min then carry on again I’m more about just enjoying the fact my body can do it now. Enjoy the process & celebrate where you have come from is my moto.

tinks3110 · 02/07/2025 16:11

Hi
Can I join? I've been running for a long time but just getting back into it after a knee injury.
Have started running with my gym group and have a 5k race at the weekend and 2 10k's booked for July and August. Then doing the Abbey Dash in November, I would love a 10k pb at Abbey Dash but have to see how my knee goes.

BogRollBOGOF · 02/07/2025 16:18

I've just had my first proper post-race run. Legs still feeling like lead. The wind was surprisingly strong and hard to run in to. I ended up taking my cap off and attaching it to my belt as it really did not want to stay on.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 02/07/2025 20:09

Welcome @tinks3110 And @MissScarletInTheBallroom good luck for you upcoming races!!

@BogRollBOGOF its really windy here today too which does make a surprising difference!

I’ve just got back from a 7.5 mile trail run with my dog. Slower pace than usual today but there were so many bits where the paths were so over grown with nettles that I had to carefully pick my way through. Also I’m sure the cows in the grounds of a local stately home I run through are out to get me! 😂. Good fun though.

SoapCollector · 02/07/2025 20:38

Thank you all for your kind words of encouragement ❤️ 🏃

@BogRollBOGOF yes I have a few parkruns close to where I live. Including a very hilly one that I've avoided so far! I agree they are great for motivation, although I have to be careful not to get carried away and set off too quick, then burn out!

@NormaMajors1992coat glad to hear it's not just me that is still taking walk breaks 🙂 Which couch to 10k program are you following?

@Whataninterestinglookingpotato thanks for the encouragement. I seem to do ok on the flat or even down hill, but throw in an incline and either my legs or lungs force me to walk. I've tried both going slower ( any slower and I'd be walking!) and taking smaller steps, I'll get there eventually.

@RunningInto you are correct I do need to look at how far I've come - thinking back to week 1 of c25k when 60 seconds of running had me out of puff!

Welcome @tinks3110 and @MissScarletInTheBallroom 🙂

Hope I've not missed anyone, thank you all again for the encouragement.
