Hi all, just setting up a second thread - I hope you don’t mind @Jumbojem but the other one was getting a bit close to ending…

Sorry to keep harping on about the weather but it’s still raining up here so instead of running this morning I’m going to get back on my lovely water rowing machine which I’ve neglected totally since starting running back in Jan/Feb. I miss it (and I miss the muscle toning it gave me) so I’m going to get back on this morning for a change.

Might do parkrun tomorrow or a longer run, haven’t yet decided.

I am glad you are feeling better, but how frightening for your loved ones. Hope you are resting up. There will be other runs in future.

RunningInto · 02/10/2025 09:38

Hope you are recovered now @MissScarletInTheBallroom and you can avoid it happening again. My DH collapsed at the end of his first ultra he later told me he had vomited blood 500m from the end of a 30mile trail run and the lady who stayed with him to finish didn’t tell him she was a GP. Geez it was scary to witness but it was just dehydration on a very hot day plus body salts imbalance. They put him in medic tent gave him lucazade m, water and salty snack plus a ECG & BP monitor for an hour and he was fine. Learnt his lesson about fuelling though!

tinks3110 · 02/10/2025 13:37

oh my goodness @MissScarletInTheBallroom hope you're ok!
I did a quick 5k in my lunchtime on Tuesday as couldn't go to run club.
Am off to run club tonight so hopefully a steady 5 miler which I really need to clear my head as work has been awful so far this week.

@Whataninterestinglookingpotato
I have a halloween 10k along the canal on 26th October, then I'm doing an 8.8 mile (don't ask why that random distance, I've no idea!) on 23rd November and the Abbey Dash 10k on 30th November. I have nothing in the diary for December as yet but will be looking as trying to keep to at least a race a month.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 02/10/2025 14:21

Thanks everyone. @RunningInto Did your husband go on to do other races OK afterwards?

It's a really hard race, quite a horrible one actually, but I feel like it has defeated me and I don't know whether to say that's enough now and maybe I'll do a 10k at some point, or whether to try again next year.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 02/10/2025 15:22

@MissScarletInTheBallroom that must have been pretty scary!! Glad you’re feeling ok now, but not a nice thing to happen. Do you know the reason so that you can try and avoid the same thing happening in future.

@tinks3110 looks like you’ve got plenty to keep you out of trouble!! I’ve been looking at the Stonehenge stomp for January. I think a load of us might be doing it. Should be fun.

tinks3110 · 02/10/2025 15:50

@Whataninterestinglookingpotato I am signed up for a half and half 10k with the gym run club in January, which is half trail and half round. apparently in previous years one of our members fell down a bog on the trail bit! So I hope that doesn't happen to me!

Cantbesure · 02/10/2025 16:47

Just going to catch up on the thread. I had a great weekend getting a PB at parkrun and then a 10k race. Not as super speedy as some on this thread but sub 28 5k and sub 57 10k which I’m over the moon with. Going to slow down now!! 😂😂

Cantbesure · 02/10/2025 16:49

glad to hear you are ok @MissScarletInTheBallroom do you know what caused you to faint?

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 02/10/2025 17:27

Well done @Cantbesure those are fantastic times!!

BogRollBOGOF · 02/10/2025 18:31

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 02/10/2025 08:17

I had an absolute nightmare on Sunday. I fainted 3 minutes from the end of my race and didn't finish. 😭

Oh no Sad

DH fainted at the gym a while back. He remained seated on the reclined machine, but was totally unresponsive for about 2 mins, eyes open and dilated, and jaw dropped. It was very disconcerting.
At least having his Garmin on, I could see his heart rate on the display which helped a bit.

RunningInto · 02/10/2025 18:33

Yes he did @MissScarletInTheBallroom but after a break did a 26m trail one on a much cooler day. He was taking on a carb drink then water whilst running but just lost balance on his body salts due to the unexpected hotter weather. Hopefully you can work out what happened to you, he was tracking various things with his Garmin so could review his data afterwards and his heart rate was ok within his normal. Have you got any race health data you can look at?

TyneFilth · 02/10/2025 19:21

So sorry to hear that @MissScarletInTheBallroom sounds really scary and frustrating so close to the end!

I am in half marathon prep mode, did 14k at the weekend and 16k today. It's two weeks from now and I haven't really done big distances for a long time. I did the GNR in 2012 (I've been saying 2014 to people/my coach but then I looked it up) and that was in 2:23 which I was a bit disappointed about, thought I could have done better but really found it hard going and I didn't have any support or anyone I knew there. I'm aiming for close to that time - after all I'm >10 years older!!

As for future races, I'm thinking of doing a beach race at West Wittering in Nov - there are 5/10/15km options. Then I'm planning on doing Fleet half in March, because I did it exactly 20 years previously in 2:15 and I think with a lot of good and focussed winter training I can now aim to beat that. Oh and I've signed up to a "half" tri in July (1900m swim, 80km bike, half marathon) wtf...

brunettemic · 03/10/2025 11:51

I had big plans for the end of this year…get under 45 mins for 10k if possible, run a half marathon PB and then build to next year’s marathon. Now I’m injured and haven’t been able to run for weeks. Rubbish!

RunningInto · 03/10/2025 12:08

No race plans here I have done in the past all sorts HM & Tris, but I’m actually just enjoying the joy of running for health as much mental as physical and focused on staying balanced & building strength. My last proper event was Lundy Island 14m trail a couple of yrs ago & we had a good time but I ran it dosed up on seasickness tablets , paracetamol & ibuprofen due to a heavy cold/flu thing and it took so so much out of me mentally & physically it put me off doing events. It had cost a lot so I couldn’t pull out or let my friend down I was doing it with. Maybe I’ll do another race / event but right now I’m just enjoying feeling fit again in my 50s 😊

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 04/10/2025 10:56

@brunettemic that’s frustrating. Hope you’re recovered soon so that you can carry on chasing those PBs.

@RunningInto there definitely something to be said for just running for the joy of it.

I paced at park run this morning. It was a localish one that I’ve not actually been to before but someone form the running club was meant to be the 26 min pacer and was injured and had to pull out so I said I’d step in. Was a nice course and I’ll def come back sometime and see what time I can do it in. I was told it was slightly long so I’d have to adjust my time for that so I went a little quicker but it wasn’t longer and I came in about 30 seconds too fast, oops. But it wasn’t longer nice running it not at full capacity! Really really windy though and did rain for a bit! Winter is here I guess.

Hope everyone else has a lovely weekend.

xsquared · 04/10/2025 11:46

Great job pacing @Whataninterestinglookingpotato . You may have helped other exceed their sub 26 goal.

I went out for my weekly long run and did 17km, but it was nowhere near as blustery as I though it was going to be, which made it pleasant.

Have a good weekend all.

BogRollBOGOF · 04/10/2025 16:42

I think I'm the tragic victim of a parkrun token mis-sorting incident!

My finishing time is about 50s slower than my watch time (which I started and stopped within a couple of secs without incident) and I've come out as BEHIND DH Shock I was out of the funnel by the time he came in and his times are correct within a few seconds.

Fortunately it was just an average run and not something like a pb, but alas the public record mistakenly thinks that DH was faster Shock

Grin

(I haven't bothered emailing the core team as they have enough on their plates and I still got my money's worth out of the event Wink )

RunningInto · 05/10/2025 14:04

Had a fab run this morning after weeks of running trail slow I felt like a road run and did 7k at the fastest pace I’ve done for years. Still got niggly hip but doing slow trail has definitely had a benefit on my overall running fitness & strength training. Happy Sunday all.

BogRollBOGOF · 05/10/2025 19:57

Long run done. It feels good to be getting back to more normal running routines. I got quite lucky with the weather too.

SFRSmum · 06/10/2025 07:51

Can I join?

Im a very new runner, started C25K in june this year, completed the plan, started going to park runs and completed my 1st 10k yesterday. Very very pleased with my 56.45 time, was going to be happy with anything under 1hr 10!

Ive now got 8 runs booked in (so far!) Over the next 12 months building up to a marathon in September.

The next is a 10k at the beginning of November, then a 10 miler at the end of November.
Im looking for runs in December/January but I cant find much in my area that suits date wise, we will see.

Going to start building the miles up now for the 10 miler. I'm planning on increasing my milage by 1km a week on my weekly long run and swithering about restarting the first 5 weeks of C25k but doing so im slow jogging the walk parts and fast running the run parts

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 06/10/2025 09:27

Well done on your long run @BogRollBOGOF and on your speedy run @RunningInto

welcome @SFRSmum well done in your recent 10k! That’s a great time for a first go.

I didn’t do the long run I had planned yesterday as stayed at my sisters and had way to much to drink and not enough sleep! I did run in the morning but my youngest sister wanted to run with me, I said ok as she’s previously told me she can do a 25 min 5k and thought she would manage an ok pace. It was lovely to go out with her but she was very slow and kept stopping to walk. We only managed just over 4 miles. Though it was nice to run through a city centre for a change. As its marathon day Sunday I may do the run I was going to do yesterday today. I don’t want to leave it until later as it’ll be too close.

Hope everyone else had a good running weekend.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 06/10/2025 10:41

Smile @BogRollBOGOF , good to hear you got your money's worth! My friend and I ran together on Saturday and we crossed the line together and did the "you go first, no you go first" in the funnel. Anyway she went before me, which although I didn't know it at the time gave me one of my missing position bingo numbers.

Well done @Cantbesure - some good times there. Excellent pacing @Whataninterestinglookingpotato.

Welcome @SFRSmum great work on your 10K. Your slow build up plan sounds sensible, and alternating jogging and running is a good idea (I have been Jeffing (run/walking) for the last year and am getting faster even with walk breaks).

I had a wet run on Friday, a windy parkrun on Saturday and a sunny 5.5 miles yesterday trying out a new route - last time I tried it I ended up in a dead end but this time I found the way out.

I haven't got anything booked in over the winter. I'm going to do a trail marathon next May, so have booked a trail HM at the appropriate point in the training plan.

Have a good week everyone!

Jumbojem · 07/10/2025 22:18

Hello all, some great times posted, and welcome newcomers.
@BogRollBOGOF how annoying they put your DH ahead when you know he was behind! That would bother me more than the time or anything else. Although having done timing once at parkrun I said never again as it was so stressful trying to get it right, that people wouldn't be happy if times were wrong.

I am plodding along, quite literally, with running but hips have not been happy since Bristol to Bath so have cut my mileage right down and trying to up the yoga for a bit. First XC event this weekend, a hilly muddy one!

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 08/10/2025 12:44

@Jumbojem hips are such a pain aren’t they. My right one has been niggling since Bristol to Bath, it’s not too bad but I can feel it. I’ve had to keep my mileage up due to the marathon this weekend. Just hoping it holds up.

today I have bitten the bullet and brought a garmin watch. I’ve been using my Apple one for ages but it’s just not as accurate and I’m getting annoyed with it always measuring short and giving me a slower pace than the rest of my group even if I was out in front and running the fastest. I’ve also had one too many PBs ruined by not being able to switch it off quickly when it’s wet or I’m sweaty. So there we go, I have defected to garmin! Looking forward to trying it out!

RunningInto · 08/10/2025 14:21

Good luck for the marathon @Whataninterestinglookingpotato and hope you enjoy the Garmin. I use the Garmin connect App to sync it to my iPhone but there’s lots of add on Apps I think that various geeky folk have developed to play with the data or you can link it straight into Strava which my DH does but I didn’t want Strava knowing all that about me.

Had an impromptu fast 5k last night after work bit of a full moon angry burst of energy as my adhd brain was in overdrive and it helped. But now have a migraine should have realised as my hormones often do a burst of energy then crash with headache!
