Hi all, just setting up a second thread - I hope you don’t mind @Jumbojem but the other one was getting a bit close to ending…

Sorry to keep harping on about the weather but it’s still raining up here so instead of running this morning I’m going to get back on my lovely water rowing machine which I’ve neglected totally since starting running back in Jan/Feb. I miss it (and I miss the muscle toning it gave me) so I’m going to get back on this morning for a change.

Might do parkrun tomorrow or a longer run, haven’t yet decided.

Hi @OhOneOhTwoOhThree
thank you for asking! I haven't run over the weekend as was away in London.
I hope to get out again this week, run club up first tomorrow I'm not leader so hopefully enjoy it more! I had massive FOMO watching the great north run yesterday and am so tempted to enter the ballot again, my heart says yes but my head (and knees) say not a chance!

I have another 10k race booked for 21/9 same route as my PB off 55.18 from August so be interesting to see how I get on in the hopefully cooler weather

BogRollBOGOF · 08/09/2025 17:19

I've just been parkrunning (with pleasing times). I'm otherwise concentrating on walking rather than running. I've dropped my penciled HM plans, but there are shorter race options avaliable this autumn that the door is open on.

I'm walking/rucking about 4km a day so that's got a similar benefit to easy runs. There's a lot of changes going on this month so I'm concentrating on new routines, and then seeing how the running slots, but with parkrun, strength and walking, I'm still in a good place for keeping fitness and not stressing it.

Interestingly DH seemed to go down with the knackered sniffles that the DCs and I had had over the previous 10 days, and it was that that quenched my desire to run at the end of the holidays.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 08/09/2025 17:31

@SoapCollector i only really do one interval session a week at the track, which I haven’t even bent to for a few weeks but will this week. Other than that I tend to just do the odd faster run or pick up the pace for the last couple of k.

@tinks3110 i would love to do a big event like the GNR. I saw quite a few people doing it on my social media despite us living at the other end of the country. I might do the great west run next year.

I got a bit of strength training in this morning and have had the inlaws over for a bbq this afternoon as a thanks for looking after our dog while we were away so no run for me. Club run tomorrow then I’m marshalling at the club 5k on Wednesday. I was going to run it but it’s where all the fast men show off how fast they are and I just couldn’t be arsed to pelt round it so thought I’d offer to marshal instead.

hope everyone has a good running week.

Jumbojem · 08/09/2025 20:16

@whataninterestinglookingpotato I'm doing bristol to Bath! Reminds me I must measure myself for a hydration vest as the email said need to bring own cup/ bottle.
Is Great Western run Exeter? I used to live there so always fancy running the half there, timings not worked out (half term/exams) last few yrs but might look at next year. That said I was thinking of just sticking to trail events, maybe forest of Dean half in March.
@OhOneOhTwoOhThree Did you share a strength plan? I'm planning to try and do some strength this winter. I am just about keeping up with some yoga which def helps with injury prevention and tight hamstrings, and the dreaded planar faciatis which I start to feel if I don't keep the stretching and toe spreading up.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 08/09/2025 20:22

Hi @Jumbojem yes, it was a Runners World for marathoners plan. Let me see if I can find it again :-)

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 08/09/2025 20:41

I’ll see you there @Jumbojem though obviously we won’t have a clue who the other one is 😂. That’s a good point about the vest. I may bring mine or I may bring my little silicone wrist bottle. I took it on a 25k run before I went on holiday and it held just enough water for that.
yes, the great west run is Exeter. I was going to do it this year but it clashed with something else.

ooo @OhOneOhTwoOhThree ill have a look at that strength plan. I just kind of made up what I was doing today as no class on at a suitable time so would be good to follow something.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 08/09/2025 20:49

Scratch that. Just seen the email, totally missed it!! I’ll have to bring my vest as says that it needs to hold 500ml of water, which seems a little excessive for 25k but rules are rules.

which wave are you in @Jumbojem? I’m in the 9am one.

Jumbojem · 08/09/2025 21:10

I'm in 9am too, I think the second 8am one got added as it was so popular. 9am is plenty early enough for me 😂 You will be way ahead of me though, I am not speedy. Garmin says 2hrs 40 so will see how close I get to that time, I will def be stopping at feed stations and taking walk breaks I imagine.
Thanks @OhOneOhTwoOhThree I will try to implement some of that. I have been trying to concentrate on form on long runs, as I think I sink I to myself and shuffle (based on looking back at some less than flattering race pics ), if that makes sense. So been trying to keep core tight, lift knees more. But I only do it when I remember and it's hard work, which is when I realised strength training would give stronger core, quads etc to make good form easier.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 09/09/2025 07:11

I felt 9am was quite early enough too. Especially as I need to get there first @Jumbojem
2h40 seems fairly quick for a 25k trail. I’ll probably take it fairly steady myself as have a 10k race the day after 😂🙈

tinks3110 · 09/09/2025 08:29

@Whataninterestinglookingpotato
ive done the Great North run 4 times over the last 10-12 years. Last time was last year, it’s a great race for the atmosphere but so busy. I’d love to do it again or might try a different half

RunningInto · 09/09/2025 10:50

Think my Garmin has me “diving” this morning on the minus elevation 🤣graph. I’m focusing on short more terrain runs to try nurse my foot back into function or at least not get worse as I can’t do distances.

Steady 5.5 miles with run club tonight. Glad to get back out there

TyneFilth · 09/09/2025 20:57

Hello again all! It's great hearing about all your holiday runs and parkrun PB dashes!

I am on taper week before Reigate Tri, so I am doing my absolute best not to do anything at all. I had an online physio appointment and I'm going to be a very good patient and do my exercises only this week. Although I've just seen someone on the RunThrough Facebook group needs a guide runner for an evening 5k in Hyde Park tomorrow... It would be slow, but it's still 5k I'm not planning for... I'd better not. I am booked on a visual impairment awareness course in October so I will feel more confident in guide running after that.

Definitely signing up for more marshalling to save me from entering too many races too. Saw this picture today on Facebook... 🤣🤣

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 09/09/2025 21:17

The picture is pretty accurate @TyneFilth good luck with the triathlon!

glad you enjoyed your club run @tinks3110

your run today does look kind of subterranean @RunningInto

i did some strength training yesterday and I’m bloody aching from it today. Clearly I have been neglecting it again! 😂. But I got out for a 7.5 mile run with the club. Nice little mixed terrain route with lots of hills! But you can’t really go any distance around here without at least some big hills!
I said I’d go out on Sunday with our run group leader and do 20 miles. He wants to leave at 8am too! Boo! But I need to do it and at least it’ll get done early.

NeverBeSoKind · 09/09/2025 22:41

First ever 10k completed today! Discovered a new place to run near me which is mostly quite flat and very scenic - and feel like I’m beginning to find my rhythm with it which is positive.

I have noticed that my left ankle (while not painful when running) does seem to swell a little on the outer joint after - so I am resting properly between runs and the swelling goes does but I am a little concerned about it.

Exciting to hear about everyone’s upcoming events - the Bath-Bristol 25k is local to me - possibly a goal for 2026!

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 10/09/2025 11:46

@NeverBeSoKind bristol to bath would be a good goal to aim for. They do a marathon version too. I might do that one next year.

I have signed myself up to a tough 10.5 mile trail race with 11 different hills and almost 1700ft of elevation in December! Should be a fun one and it’s the first race of the calendar for the county series.

lightanddreamy · 10/09/2025 13:50

xsquared · 07/09/2025 16:47

Well done @Cantbesure on your parkrun pb. It won't be long before you hit sub 28.

Did anyone on here do the Great North Run today? I hope you enjoyed the race and atmosphere.

Not wanting g to feel left out, I ran my own half marathon this morning and got my 3rd fastest HM. The other two were from a flat course.

Me! It was my second half marathon and I did it in ~ 2:40. I’m really pleased with that, as I treated it as a training run and took it very gently. I felt very comfortable and had a lot left in the tank at the end. There was such a lot of time waiting and the course was very congested but I had a really good day. Now to keep up the training ahead of my next half marathon in October…!

Welcome to the newer posters and so pleased to read of some great successes lately!

RunningInto · 13/09/2025 19:52

Nice couple of 5ks this week both on low tide beach as avoiding concrete flat surfaces. Plus self massaging by foot and calf after, is keeping me moving still. Hope everyone enjoyed a few nice Sat runs

Jumbojem · 13/09/2025 23:07

Had a nice trail run with a friend today, just under 10 miles and we avoided the rain! I was a bit worried at one point, signs saying private property and I could hear lots of shooting, and could see lots of young pheasants running about. I didn't want to stray into the middle of a shoot! A farmer type bloke did appear while we deliberated over the map on our phones and confirmed it was private but he was friendly and helped us plot an alternate route back.
I have started getting terrible restless legs in the evening after long or hard runs lately, drives me potty! Magnesium used to help but it doesn't seem to be working so well these days. Does anyone else get this, if so what works for you?

RunningInto · 14/09/2025 07:21

Glad you managed to avoid the pheasant shoot I nearly lost my right arm as a stray pheasant was hiding in the bushes and for some reason my spidey instincts made me put my dog back on lead .1min before, geez she went for it yanking & dragging me with her. I tend to avoid the lower part of the woods when they are about normally but this one was way off course . Sorry can’t help on the restless legs as Magnesium spray is the only thing I’ve heard, my mil suffers a lot too. Hope you can find relief, would a short ice/cold bath help on legs help?

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 14/09/2025 12:15

Well done on your beach runs @RunningInto and on your long run @Jumbojem. I don’t think I can be much help with advice on the restless leg front I’m afraid. I hope you find something that helps, it can’t be pleasant!

park run for me yesterday just at our local farmers field one. Dd1 came and actually managed a PB 5k time which is impressive on that course. My time was respectable but not a PB. 3rd female and 1st in my age group though so not bad.

20 mile long run today with the marathon training gang. I was surprised how easy it was and I def had another 10k in me at the end. If I can run the pace I ran today for my marathon then a good for age place looks achievable for me to apply for for London 2027! So that’s good. We shall see what happens on the day.

BogRollBOGOF · 14/09/2025 12:30

Still in life-adjustment phase. Had a good strong effort parkrun yesterday, my first run since the previous week's parkrun.

I'm in an awkward state where my muscles are tired, but I'm needing to rest and burn energy at the same time. So yesterday having a busy, high energy morning then an easy afternoon with my feet up, plus a lovely nap. My sleep quality and body battery perked up to their best levels in weeks.

I might see if there's energy in the tank for a short weekday run. I'd like to get a routine going, but managing energy is the priority. Last week, I felt better after going to my circuits class mid-week and the stretch out was kind of refreshing.

From experience, I'll perk up in a week or two.

Jumbojem · 14/09/2025 14:46

Hope things do perk up @BogRollBOGOF do you know what's causing low energy, or are you recovering from something?
I went for a walk this morning, before the rain came, partially around the local parkrun route. Made me think maybe I should give it a go now and then over the winter. I just love a weekend lie in though!
@Whataninterestinglookingpotato sounds promising for the marathon, which one are you planning to do?
