I've just done W1 R1 so am at the beginning. Anyone else want running friend/s? A couple of rl friends fancy doing it but I bet there's people here that have been thinking about it like I did for a while?
I know there's plenty on MN already doing it but want to chat with newbies like myself. Spur each other on 🏃‍♀️👟👟

Thanks @DCINightingale you make a good point about speed, i am definitely faster than when I started so hopefully if I slow down then 3 mins is possible. Should have thought of that, thank you!

DCINightingale · 22/04/2023 08:25

Just done W6R3 which was 25 minutes, i can't believe I managed the whole thing.

Hope everyone has good weekends whatever you are doing!

upandoutofbed · 22/04/2023 08:38

Welcome new runners!

@DCINightingale whoop 🎉🎉 that's fantastic! Amazing! How are you feeling?

We were running in sync as I've just finished too - w2r3 on a misty eerie morning here. A hard slog for me today. I have to really manage energy levels - lots of rest for me this weekend!

@Ellie1015 I definitely agree re pace and think w3 is manageable if I keep it slow and steady.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

bailarbailar · 22/04/2023 09:28

W8R1 for me this morning, the end is in sight! Managed exactly 4km in that time (28mins), so defo won't do 5Km by the end of the programme unless I speed up massively. I got a stitch half way through but managed to slow down and it wore off eventually... think it was brought in by speeding up to get past a scary man with scary dog lol
Well done everyone

Ellie1015 · 22/04/2023 09:28

@DCINightingale 25 mins is brilliant, well done!

@upandoutofbed congratulations on completing wk2 :) I am having the weekend off so wk3 starts on Mon for me.

Can I join you? I was running late for something last week and, as I was in trainers, thought I'd run there. I changed my mind after about 10 steps and realised quite how abysmal my cardio fitness is. I've done C25k twice before. The first time I carried one running for a couple of years afterwards. The second time was interrupted by a dodgy ankle. I've since had physio for the ankle so am hoping it will be better this time.
Anyway, W1R1 done this morning. Gosh it was tough! Never has a minute been so long. I thought I was going to be sick on the last two runs!
For this asking about what to do next, the first time I graduated, I added an extra minute to my run for the next couple of months so I was up to 40 mins and 5k. I then had access to a treadmill so used that to do bursts of running at 10km an hour so I knew what it be pace would feel like. I never got my 5k down to less than 35 mins.

WeWereInParis · 23/04/2023 07:06

I (finally!) just did W1R1! It wasn't as bad as I thought, but I was going extremely slowly!

Ellie1015 · 23/04/2023 10:28

Well done getting started @raspberriesblueberries and @WeWereInParis

That's great to hear you kept running for a couple of years after too, i am hoping to keep going longer term too.

Motorcycleemptyness · 23/04/2023 21:34

I’m a bit of a latecomer but hoping I can join this thread as it’s still active! I’m almost 35 and I realised my cardio fitness has more or less disappeared since covid, and I’ve had a horrible bout of shingles which has taken months to clear fully. I had a couple of weeks where I was more active than usual and felt inspired so I’ve started C25K. I also spent the whole day crying at people completing the marathon today (whilst a bit hungover on the sofa) so I am even more inspired today! I did week one last week but feel intimidated by starting week 2, anyone any tips?

DCINightingale · 24/04/2023 07:15

Morning everyone. Well done for doing week 1 @Motorcycleemptyness . If you managed all the running stints then if you stick with it you should manage week 2 as well. Hardest bit is getting out of the door so manage that and the rest will follow.

I didn't watch much marathon yesterday (kids do not have the tolerance) but I always find it inspiring. So I headed out this morning to do W7R1. Went pretty well, i covered more ground than the same run on Saturday which is encouraging. Felt ropey at the half way time call so slowed down and really felt like I found a good rhythm.

Well done everyone for keeping going, we can do this!!

SupremeCommanderServalan · 24/04/2023 08:47

Day one, week one just completed here. I did it during lockdown, and kept it up afterwards. Then I let life get in the way last year and have become 80% couch, 20% woman. Like a PP, I am fat and old so really had to get a grip. So am back at it and feeling rather wobbly now but v pleased with myself.

beguilingeyes · 24/04/2023 09:55

I'm doing C25K for the fourth time! Did it first in 2018 and have more or less kept running but Covid and various illnesses have caused a few breaks. I've started the dreaded week 5 and my next run will be the 20 minutes.
Tip for the newbies, especially if you're getting knee pain. It's worth going to a running shop and getting your gait analysed for a good pair of shoes. My knee pain vanished after buying proper shoes.
Also, Parkrun is a wonderful thing. I found myself lacking motivation after finishing and Parkrun keeps me going. I'm still terminally slow my PB is 39 minutes, but I enjoy it and it gets the weekend off to a flying start.
My local Parkrun gets a lot of walkers so I never feel that I'm right at the back.
When I did C25K before I tried upping my running time in small increments. I think I was running for 55 minutes at one point.

APurpleSquirrel · 24/04/2023 12:07

Question - what do you wear if it's raining? So far I've only had dry sessions but today it's going to rain when I'm due to go & not sure whether to wear a waterproof but might get too hot?

Motorcycleemptyness · 24/04/2023 12:48

Thank you. I’m going to go for a run and swim and sauna tonight - starting week 2! Writing here to hold self accountable, I know I will feel better if I go.

bailarbailar · 24/04/2023 13:03

@APurpleSquirrel I get insanely hot so just wear my usual T-shirt and embrace the fact the rain will hide the sweat. I have found a hat means I don't mind it so much though. I used a woolly hat in winter and a cap in summer. There was a particularly bad downpour once when I wished for a sou'wester tho

Motorcycleemptyness · 24/04/2023 19:53

Checking back in to say I did it! W2R1 completed and I actually feel great. I could have kept going, and I had a lovely 1km swim after. I did it on a treadmill today because it was absolutely chucking it down in London (still is!) but I’ll be outside for my next run. I feel fab. Good luck to the person doing the 20min run! Dreading that but I have full faith in you!

APurpleSquirrel · 24/04/2023 20:20

Thanks @bailarbailar - it was drizzling to start, but cleared up about half way. Did W1R3 but only ran 3times for part of the run - got to go slow for knee, but it's better than last week & I felt okish & nearly got through a full 60secs run at not a slower-than-brisk-walking-pace.
I'll be repeating W1 until i can run the full amount in each session.

Motorcycleemptyness · 25/04/2023 06:49

@APurpleSquirrel well done! Keep going!

WeWereInParis · 25/04/2023 07:09

Just did W1R2 - not happy with this weather! It's April and people were scraping ice off their cars!

DaysofHoney · 25/04/2023 07:11

I know you wanted to chat to newbies, but just came on to say stick with it. I started c25k just over a year ago and I just ran the London marathon. Anything is possible.

upandoutofbed · 25/04/2023 08:23

Hi everyone and well done!

@DaysofHoney thanks for posting, that's amazing, well done! Mighty impressive after a year, what an inspiration, you must have really got the bug! Hope it went really well.

I've just completed w3r1. Still feeling very creaky though with sore legs and lower back. It's like my body doesn't know what's happening to it! I've done some stretching afterwards though and crossing everything it will resolve itself. Other than that the actual running went fine.

bailarbailar · 25/04/2023 09:51

@DaysofHoney thanks for letting us know! That's my ultimate goal, just entered the ballot for the 12th time ha ha

Oodieandacuppatonightplease · 25/04/2023 10:17

lots of fabulous news here, well done for getting out of that door you lot, and how I admire you @DaysofHoney that’s amazing, I would so love to be able to say those words.
did w4r3 this morning, still not brave enough to leave the treadmill but do feel I’m achieving something, despite the slowness, only on 6.5k speed for the ‘runs’.
keep going you lovely lot.

Motorcycleemptyness · 25/04/2023 20:07

@DaysofHoney you are an inspiration!!! I would LOVE to do that. Setting my alarm for 5:30am and dragging myself out on W2R2 tomorrow, wish me luck!!!

Well done @DaysofHoney- that's amazing!!

I've done W3R2 today, tried a different route than Sunday and lo and behold, the 1st 3 min run was up a bloody hill again! 🙈
