I'm in absolutely no way qualified to start this thread but I couldn't see another one!

So after nearly 2 weeks of not running with plantar fasciitis issues, I've just done W6R1! I thought I'd go back a bit a build up gradually but it was actually ok considering I haven't run in so long. I haven't lost it completely as actually felt a bit like a runner! 🥳 We'll see how my heels are later today...

And I got back home just before the hail hit!

Hope anybody else running this morning is enjoying the crazy weather!

limps in shiftily

Hope it's OK to join in! I've just started C25K (the Jo Whiley one) and gave managed to injure my knee on my third run!

So I'm here for tips for tubby, unfit, injured beginners. I have no idea what I've done but I've had to bump down (and up) stairs on my bum like a toddler today.

I'm guessing my ancient cheapo trainers probably haven't helped but I didn't want to splash out until I knew I was going to stick at it. Now I'm guessing it will be a wee while before I can walk, nevermind run. So disappointed in myself.

eases bum carefully onto armchair

purplesequins · 17/07/2021 15:13

ouch margot
def rest and ice that knee. ibuprofen might be wise as well.
if it doesn't improve in a couple of days get it seen.

wrt shoes, decathlon does decent basic running shoes for around 50 quid. they don't look awful and are nice for walking if you end up not continuing.

MargotsBumpyNight · 17/07/2021 15:46

Thanks @purplesequins. Knee doesn't seem swollen or anything so I'm just trying to stay off my feet for the moment (and necking the painkillers.. Though may switch to wine tonight!) I'll definitely have a look at those brands. I do want to continue as I was enjoying being out and just that feeling of having done something. Plus frightening the children with my red, sweaty face.

purplesequins · 17/07/2021 18:00

back from a long (ish) run.
was quite warm here and I had to slow down a bit.
I want to attempt a 10k next weekend, hopefully towards the beach and back.

emilyjeff · 20/07/2021 08:04

Is anyone still running during this heat wave? I've not been since Friday, was intending to go this morning as DH was up early for work but I just couldn't face it! Have been and walked my dogs instead so at least I've done something

purplesequins · 20/07/2021 08:23

it's not very hot where I am, so still running.
but last year when we had over 30 for more than a week I ran early in the mornings (5:30am) when it was coolest.

Cavagirl · 20/07/2021 08:23

I went early on Saturday which was quite nice but not since. Even at 7am now it's over 20 degrees here 🥵
I was out in a local park in the middle of the day and astounded at the number of people out for a run in the midday heat. I don't know how they do it. Not for me I'm afraid!
Looking at the forecast I think it'll be end of the week realistically.

purplesequins · 20/07/2021 08:24

(I figured if I can't sleep well anyway I can go for a run and possible dip in the canal after)

emilyjeff · 20/07/2021 14:35

Yeah its been 30 here yesterday and today. I took the dogs about 7.30 this morning but already felt quite warm, I'm afraid I'm not dedicated enough to be out running at 5.30am!! Think it's going to be cooler fri onwards according to my weather app so I think I'll aim for Friday morning.

purplesequins · 21/07/2021 15:02

I did a short run last night when it was less sunny.
decided to repeat what we did in the running club: 2k run, stretches, 1k barefoot intervals.
hopefully thosd dxtra muscles (ouch) will help for my planned run along the beach.

purplesequins · 22/07/2021 18:34

evening all.
just back from a leisurely 4k with the teens.
leisurely for them, they hardly broke a sweat and were chatting the whole time.
good tempo of 5.20 though.

emilyjeff · 22/07/2021 18:55

Well done @purplesequins
Today has been very hot again but think it's meant to tail off now and weekend will be cooler. I'm hopefully gonna head out early ish tomorrow I've found another route I want to try, it's a tarmac path but seems to do a loop round a grassy area and then back through our estate. Don't think it'll be far but if I'm not too warm I'll do a few laps

LatinforTelly · 23/07/2021 12:05

Agree it's hard to find a cool enough time to run...and I am in Scotland HmmGrin. I went out this morning for the first time in a week.

Is anyone having problems with the couch to 5k app? I graduated in May but still use a week 9 run for the timings. My phone is a 4 year old android - not sure if they've updated the app so it is too fancy for my phone?! App just won't load then I get an error message. The logo has changed too.

Cavagirl · 24/07/2021 10:39

Did anyone do parkrun today? I totally forgot 😳

purplesequins · 24/07/2021 10:43

no. my nearest one is at 8am.
I'm not getting up that early on a weekend

Dontbeme · 24/07/2021 14:21

I have just completed run 3 of week 9! I'm thrilled, never thought I would be running and liking it. Anybody any advice on what to do next, I was thinking of three runs per week and two hiit or a hiit and boxing class for variety?

purplesequins · 24/07/2021 15:02

whoop whoop beme
fabulous!

up to you really. there are some programmes for after, but some are happy with just running for pleasure or doing park runs.
mixing it up is always good.
I currently do a 5k midweek and then a longer run on the week end.
I find it difficult to fit in more than 3 runs regularly.

CalmConfident · 24/07/2021 22:09

Parkrun! So happy to have it back 😊

ExConstance · 26/07/2021 14:50

It is a couple of weeks since I got to 5k now. I can't say i've extended it very much but I've found a couple of new routes and can run over the footpaths near home when the weather is as dry as this. I'm really keen to keep going because 5k has gone from being a rather frightening target to something I look forward to getting out of bed for, almost a need to get going. On the hot days I'm going out at 5am, though it will not be light then soon, so I'll have to do some post run stuff at home before I go. As part of m "self improvement" plan I have to ask myself how I am and what my mind, body and spirit need each morning, so I keep thinking of the running to make myself really believe it. Never want to go back to week 1 run 1 again!

purplesequins · 26/07/2021 14:59

I sometimes have to pinch myself.
sometimes during the run I'm slightly in disbelief with myself that I can run without stopping (apart from traffic lights) for 30 minutes or more.

Lentil63 · 26/07/2021 19:25

I’m 58, 4 stone at least overweight 🥴 and I haven’t done any exercise in yonks. Really I’m in pretty poor shape. I know I have to take myself in hand and I started this today but I found it so difficult and had to fast walk quite a lot of it.
Have any of you been where I am today and gone on to be able to run 5K in 30 minutes?
Please give me some hope I can do this.

Cavagirl · 27/07/2021 09:03

Hi Lentil
I've been knocking around on these boards since the autumn and it never ceases to amaze me what people achieve! @fellrunner85 has a particularly inspiring story
You can definitely do it, the best advice I was given is a) trust the programme, it works b) most of the blockers are in your mind! You body is a machine and ultimately will do what you condition it to do. c) absolutely no shame in repeating a week if you feel you need to.
So just keep on keeping on, you will definitely get there!

LatinforTelly · 27/07/2021 13:30

This is a lovely thread, Lentil63 www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/a3987627-Does-couch-25k-actually-work?

I did week 9 in May and still use the app for timings. I'm still not running the full 5k quite but I do run for 33 minutes(! not counting or anything!) A lovely friend told me to just keep going more slowly, but don't stop. A lot of the advice on the linked thread is to repeat weeks as well. I remember I used to count my steps when I was doing the 1 minute intervals, I hated it so much!

ExConstance · 27/07/2021 14:17

Yes, Lentil, although I did it before 10 years ago I'm now 64, I was 12 stone when I started and the first run - (is it 8 x 1m run, 90 second walk?) Left me feeling hot sweat and as if my legs did not belong to me. I felt I was going to cough up blood. I too had to plod on for longer than 8 weeks as there was a minor injury, bad weather, early starts at work, etc. The knowledge that it does work, that lots of other people have done it and, after a little while, it gives you a real buzz kept me going. It is however very strange to think that what is a long sunday afternoon walk for the dog is now a 35 minute run for me.

purplesequins · 28/07/2021 17:02

awful run with the teens this afternoon. one needed to stop after 1k due to stitches. probably due to eating 3000 cals at lunch
the other continued with me but moaned all the time. and I wasn't able to outrun him to get away Wink
still a respectable 5k in the end.
