I'm in absolutely no way qualified to start this thread but I couldn't see another one!

So after nearly 2 weeks of not running with plantar fasciitis issues, I've just done W6R1! I thought I'd go back a bit a build up gradually but it was actually ok considering I haven't run in so long. I haven't lost it completely as actually felt a bit like a runner! 🥳 We'll see how my heels are later today...

And I got back home just before the hail hit!

Hope anybody else running this morning is enjoying the crazy weather!

Morning run done - back to normal distance.

randomsabreuse · 07/07/2021 13:55

If I'm running with a group I eat a solid lunch then eat after the run. It's much easier as I've usually done dinner for the rest of the family before I go so my plate is ready when I get in... However it took a while to get to this point and I used energy gels as easily digested energy until I got used to waiting.

purplesequins · 07/07/2021 16:42

I have not run for a while.
it's end of term activities for my younger dc so ferrying them about by bike.
I hope I can get an easy 5k in tomorrow evening.

DobbyIsAFreeElf · 10/07/2021 16:52

I've just attempted w7r2 after nearly 2 weeks off due to work and a week away.
It was very hard going and ended up walking up the hill not quite finishing the full 25 minutes.
I find it really annoying that when I run, every step that I take I have a clicking sound in my ear. Not sure if that's normal or if it's just another weird thing my body does.

emilyjeff · 10/07/2021 17:23

At least you've been out Dobby! I've only managed one run so far this week. Obviously still lots of unpacking to do plus still feeling quite tired and lacking in energy after second covid jab. Hoping to do a longer slow run tomorrow morning for a bit further exploring of the local area

emilyjeff · 11/07/2021 15:51

Ran this morning, put my garmin on and it said today's run was 25 min easy pace so I thought I'd just go with that! Set off down a Byway and then onto a bridleway. Got a little lost as my OS map is well out of date and doesn't show the new bypass that was built several years ago but a helpful walker pointed me on the right way back towards home! Did about 30 mins altogether and felt pretty good.
There's a running group in my new town so been noseying on their fb page as they share what routes their doing each week. That should keep me going for a while!

ExConstance · 12/07/2021 12:08

Well, it was supposed to be "the day" on Sunday, the day I finally ran 5k. All had gone well with the 3 x 30 minute runs ( except for falling over in mud and brambles on Friday) and I went to bed on Saturday with some enthusiasm for the coming day. On Sunday I set out but realised before I'd got very far there were , ahem, "bathroom issues"and eventually I settled on a rather slow and uncomfortable 30 minute run instead of forging on and achieving the target. I'll be trying again on Wednesday, DH thought it was hilarious.

purplesequins · 12/07/2021 13:01

I hate it when that happens.
I need to be quite strict with having no food for 2 hours before running (ideally 3 hours).

hellointhere · 12/07/2021 17:12

Hello! I'm wondering if anyone has found a way to incorporate yoga into their routine? At the moment the only way I have been able to do it is straight after the run. I'm wondering if it's a bad idea to alternate days? One day yoga, next day run, etc. But then this isn't really a rest day.
I have nearly finished! I did week 9 run 1 this morning!
I intend to keep running :)

purplesequins · 12/07/2021 18:50

yoga is very different to running. it's fine to do in addition to running.
I do strength exercises and stretches on non running days.

emilyjeff · 12/07/2021 19:00

I try and do Yoga every day, just 15 mins or so, haven't been very good lately though! Then I do strength exercises on non running days

randomsabreuse · 12/07/2021 19:29

Yoga every day is fine. I do try to do a "programme" as that mixes up easy ones with tougher ones but keeps the consistency of doing "something"!

ExConstance · 14/07/2021 09:52

I do yoga and pilates on my non running days too. i think all that extra stretching must be god for me, though it does make me ache a bit.

Main purpose of posting today is to say that I have done it! the 5k run was completed this morning. It was a beautiful morning at 5.30am, I went through the woods again and fell over a tree root, having missed the mud this time but apart from that it was a joy to do, and I felt so happy to reach the speed limit sign for the next village which is m 1/2 way point. I was so happy I did a little sprint finish to my special tree.
It has taken me much longer than 9 weeks, started at the end of march when I was 12 stone and now I'm 9 stone 13. I seriously thought I was too old and cronky after 10 years not running and being nearly 65. So, you can do it too!!!!
I know this sounds very self satisfied and smug but it is just for today, I feel quite proud of myself. I'll be my normal humble self again tomorrow.

purplesequins · 14/07/2021 09:54

whoop whoopconstance

very well done!

emilyjeff · 14/07/2021 10:27

Well done constance! You're allowed to feel smug you've earned it 😊
I went out for another little explore this morning, about 4k at a slow pace. Saw another 2 footpath signs along the way so more for me to explore! Hoping to do a long slow run at the weekend so I can go a bit further. Don't really need garmin at the min as wanting to explore is keeping me very motivated to get out there!!

Cavagirl · 14/07/2021 11:55

@ExConstance 👏👏👏 huge respect for what you've achieved, well done!!!!!

Cavagirl · 14/07/2021 11:57

@emilyjeff stupid question - do you need an actual gaming watch to follow the garmin plans you're doing?
I really like the sound of them but it's a lot of money, wondering if there's a cheat option to test it before investing....

Cavagirl · 14/07/2021 11:58

*garmin not gaming!

randomsabreuse · 14/07/2021 12:51

@cavagirl

You can do similar to the Garmin plans with any device that gives instant pace feedback (phone or watch) BUT the most helpful thing about the Garmin plan is that the workout you're supposed to do is just there rather than having to program it in - and it beeps at you if you're going too fast/slow.

I had specific run targets I could use with my old TomTom watch and the big difference for me has been the motivational side of it being integrated into my smart watch rather than requiring more effort for me to sort.

What I need now is an equivalent for strength training as I'm so much better at getting out for a run than getting on with a workout in my house!

I think that Zombies Run has a couple of programmes with at least some speed sensing (random sprint intervals) but didn't try them.

emilyjeff · 14/07/2021 13:06

@Cavagirl I'm not sure tbh. You use the garmin connect app and then it syncs to the watch but you could try downloading the app and see how far you can get? In theory you could set up a training plan and it would tell you what to do each session you just wouldn't have the watch telling you when to run/ when to stop etc

ExConstance · 14/07/2021 13:19

Thank you!!!

Cavagirl · 14/07/2021 13:36

That's really helpful thanks both Smile

DobbyIsAFreeElf · 15/07/2021 20:39

W8R1 completed this afternoon. Those extra 3 minutes were surprisingly easy to add. In the 38minute total I covered 5k for the first time which feels great.
Now I'm nearing the end of the programme and because I'm proud I have managed to stick to it I am going to buy myself some new running shoes. I've looked into gait analysis and I'm keen to have this checked.
I also have a few options on where to shop. Up and running, runners need and factory outlets for nike, ASICS, Adidas and Reebok. What brand shoe do you think is best for 5k on the road twice a week? (I also need a wide fit)

purplesequins · 15/07/2021 21:17

well done dobby
wrt shoes I would go for a proper running shoe shop.

also have a look at runner's world to see if you find your foot type.

I have asics gel kayano as I over pronate and have wide feet with high arches.

but most people do well with neutral shoes where it's more a matter of the fit.

emilyjeff · 16/07/2021 09:33

Dobby if you get your gait analysed at a running shop they will recommend a few different brands/ styles that will suit you. I have saucony guide but that's just what works for me, I over pronate and have quite wide feet.
Set out to do 5 miles of exploring this morning but wasn't very successful. First footpath was a bit overgrown, second one grass was cut but ground very uneven. Got to the third field and couldn't even see the path! Determined I wasn't going back tho so fought my way through stingers nearly as tall as me. Reached the road, did about another 0.5 mile but couldn't find my next footpath! There was a security gate across the track and no footpath signs so turned round and came home along the road. I will try again from the opposite direction but maybe I'll leave it a few months so every where isn't so over grown. Managed 6k anyway so fairly happy with that.
