I'm in absolutely no way qualified to start this thread but I couldn't see another one!

So after nearly 2 weeks of not running with plantar fasciitis issues, I've just done W6R1! I thought I'd go back a bit a build up gradually but it was actually ok considering I haven't run in so long. I haven't lost it completely as actually felt a bit like a runner! 🥳 We'll see how my heels are later today...

And I got back home just before the hail hit!

Hope anybody else running this morning is enjoying the crazy weather!

I'm already planning my next run which will be Friday. Gonna get up at 5 and go then so no one sees the sweaty mess at the end haha

purplesequins · 23/06/2021 16:55

the first 10 min are always hard.
I need that to find a rythm. but after that it's great.

a run at 5am Shock I only did that once last year when it was too hot.
honestly I doubt anyone will judge you.
sweaty mess - yep and tomato red face every time after running Blush

but. it. feels. sooooo. good.

TwoLeftElbows · 23/06/2021 17:14

@Lolly34h 5am, that's dedication! I can relate to the fear of being seen, I started in my tiny back garden.

Lolly34h · 23/06/2021 17:17

I did the first 'run' in the back garden today and it felt a bit stilted. Think being on the footpaths may help with the flow. And judging by the state of me when i finished it's a early morning thing or I won't do it at all

Lolly34h · 24/06/2021 08:26

Well woke up this morning and my legs feel like lead is this normal

TwoLeftElbows · 24/06/2021 22:31

Lolly I think it usually aches after your first day of doing something new. But go gently. If you're still sore tomorrow, you can always give it another day or so before your next run.

Lolly34h · 25/06/2021 08:41

I feel better today less achy so I've just got my running stuff on and I'm gonna give it another bash

purplesequins · 25/06/2021 10:03

mild muscle ache is normal.
running in the garden (lots of turns) is probably harder than outside on a straight stretch.

Lolly34h · 25/06/2021 11:39

I managed run 2 in the garden wasn't too bad. I'm gonna finish this week in the garden and then do week 2 on the road and see how I feel

TwoLeftElbows · 25/06/2021 14:25

Well done Lolly! Yes it's definitely easier on your body out on the roads.

Lolly34h · 25/06/2021 19:33

I have the bug I wanna run again tomorrow but know when I wake up my legs will feel like lead again

randomsabreuse · 26/06/2021 13:14

Well done to everyone.

I've been running a bit despite not actually having a plan at the moment (completed a half marathon in a disappointing time). Grabbed a less hot morning to go for a full out 10k and finally got under the hour. Haven't tried for a flat out 10k in ages so very pleased with sneaking under 58 minutes. So that's 2 (or possibly 3) pairs of leggings earned.

Interestingly my legs seem to like 10k pace a lot more than half marathon pace. I think my ambitious 5k pace (9 minute miles) should be my half marathon pace according to my legs but my lungs and heart definitely don't agree. My legs also seem to gain power easier than I get fitter. Frustrating...

About a year ago I was frustrated with running after missing my 5k target. Then I had appendicitis, tried to get back running too quickly and could barely do the c2 5k sessions which I started in November. Now I've achieved my initial arbitrary running targets I set after my first child!

Garmin Coach plans have made a massive difference. The 5k time one worked out better for me than the HM one (although route planning was at least partially to blame for that) and I haven't done a 10k plan yet, but psychologically having a plan with boxes to tick really helps me get my behind out the door when I'd otherwise be tempted not to bother!

emilyjeff · 26/06/2021 14:43

Wow well done on your 10k @randomsabreuse! I have the opposite problem to you, my legs are weaker than my lungs. Think I need to restart yoga and the strength exercises I was doing before but have been short on time lately busy with work, and getting ready to move house.
Garmin plan def helps me with motivation too. Even if I don't always do what the session suggests it's keeping me going out 3x a week. Tomorrow is long run day, planning on doing a route I've looked at before, some of its a Byway so it's also a possible horse riding route so will kill two birds with one stone!

purplesequins · 26/06/2021 15:03

my legs used to be stronger than my lungs until I got my asthma under control.
I still am cautious as I get panicky if I get too out of breath.

next week the running group pairs up with a dog rescue to train dogs not to react to runners. great idea but I shall keep away as I don't want to risk an asthma attack.

well done on the half marathon random

lolly I had the lead feeling until I was able to run about 15 min in one go. now only after an unusual long run.

TwoLeftElbows · 26/06/2021 15:24

Really inspiring seeing all the exploits of graduates!

W6R2 completed. I've earned myself 2 days off, but feeling very nervous about W6R3 onwards and I'm tempted to repeat W6R2 a couple more times first.

purplesequins · 26/06/2021 15:35

elbows you will be fine. homestly.
but having said that, there is no shame repeating a run or even a week if you feel you need to.

randomsabreuse · 26/06/2021 16:34

@emilyjeff

Exploring is my favourite part of running!

@Lolly34h
I found running got much easier once I could do steady runs - the first 5 minutes are the toughest even now... And I definitely like straight lines better than turning - if you are still running in the garden I recommend changing direction between each interval to help with soreness. Even road camber can make me more sore if I am not careful.

Lolly34h · 26/06/2021 21:25

I went out this morning and did week 1 run 3. I absolutely love it! I can't wait to start week 2 Monday! I'm using some old Nike trainers to do this so when I graduate I'm gonna buy myself some proper running shoes.

Lolly34h · 26/06/2021 21:28

I actually went to the park today! It was super early and super cool and I loved it!

emilyjeff · 27/06/2021 12:18

Glad you're enjoying it @Lolly34h
@randomsabreuse same here! My long slow runs have become my favourite. I really like exploring and as its the weekend I'm under no pressure to get back by a certain time.
So sadly the byway turned out to be very uneven and overgrown so I went a little way down and then turned round, didn't fancy injuring myself. So didn't go as far as originally planned but still ran for 45min which was what garmin plan specified. My pace was slower than normal but probably due to a lot of it being on grass/hilly/ uneven ground. Think my legs will be feeling it tomorrow!

purplesequins · 27/06/2021 14:50

what I took home from the running session with a physio was to run more active.
more upright and lifting the legs a little more.
the physio explained that it can reduce injury as you are less likely to trip if you lift your leg more.

MozzchopsThirty · 28/06/2021 15:19

Hi all, I was just wondering if I haven't run in a while, should I start from the beginning again?

I did CT5k years ago and kept up running for quite a few years on and off.
I was running 3-4K a couple of times a week but had covid in January and haven't had a good run since

Just don't know if I should start at week 1?
I am pretty fit, training 4 times a week but no runs

emilyjeff · 28/06/2021 16:34

Hi @MozzchopsThirty as you're fairly fit anyway you probably don't need to go right back to the start, unless you want to. I had a break of several months and still managed to run a mile n a treadmill without stopping. For me personally I know I'd feel frustrated if it was too easy, I'd maybe try week 3 or 4?

MozzchopsThirty · 28/06/2021 19:15

Thank you @emilyjeff I think I'll start on week 3 and see how I go

randomsabreuse · 28/06/2021 19:52

@MozzchopsThirty

I'd probably go out for a "test" run without a definite plan and see how it goes rather than definitely commit to a week before you've tried. If you're training regularly but not running you might be surprised how far you can get going steadily!
