@talk I have both kinds of shorts but I prefer the square looser kind. I find them a bit cooler and more comfortable. I have adidas ones.

randomsabreuse · 28/04/2021 21:59

@Talksunderwater

I wear long (above knee) cycling shorts as they're like leggings. Tried in shorter flapper types and I chafed so badly. I'm very chafe prone anyway, can't wear a dress without tights/shorts and could not even when I was 11! Combination of narrow hips, big thighs and chafy skin as I see teens wearing tiny shorts and not walking like a cowboy.

WhereAreWeNow · 29/04/2021 06:10

@Talksunderwater have a look at 2-in-1 shorts. You get the best of both worlds - a tighter, cycling short pair (often with a pocket which I find really useful) which wicks sweat away and provides a bit of coverage, and the a short looser pair on top. You can find cheap ones on ebay, decathlon or sports direct.

fellrunner85 · 29/04/2021 08:24

Decathlon's 2 in 1 shorts are really good for the price. I prefer them to my more expensive Ronhills.

My favourites, though, are my Nikes -, they're the baggy, square type - because they're breathable and don't ride up. I find that I get more chafing with cycling-short style shorts, as they can roll up and run, whereas loose running shorts are comfier and more breathable.

fellrunner85 · 29/04/2021 08:24

Roll up and rub, not run!

RichardMarxisinnocent · 29/04/2021 08:44

W1R2 done! Today felt tough for the first couple of runs, not sure if that was due to going slightly fast for the first bit of the first run, or due to me being a bit tired generally. I'm pleased with myself for getting myself out of bed, and then completing the session. Still can't imagine running for 5 minutes non stop, let alone 30! I found my notes from last time I tried a couch to 5k and I was managing 5 mins nonstop so apparently I was capable of it once!

RichardMarxisinnocent · 29/04/2021 08:45

Not W1R2, it was W1R3!

redcandlelight · 29/04/2021 09:09

you will be fine richard
the first week is the hardest. after that just follow the programme and it will take you through.
if you struggle try going slower (even if it feels silly running slowe that fast walking speed)
and don't forget strength exercises and stretches on rest days.

KarmaViolet · 29/04/2021 09:13

Well done Richard!

My knee is incredibly sore today - I'm already doing yoga and a bit of strength exercising, has anybody tried a foam roller? I had some physio years ago to try to help with my wonky joints and one of the things they did was foam roller and it felt like it helped because it was agony

RichardMarxisinnocent · 29/04/2021 09:13

Thank you redcandlelight! I've done some stretches after my runs, but so far nothing on the rest days. I do need to get back into doing yoga, so will try that I think.

randomsabreuse · 29/04/2021 11:19

Foam roller is good evil especially ITBs which are the side of your thighs and good at triggering knee pain when tight. Glutes firing properly are crucial for knees too (clamshells).

My physio always said cold on joints and warm on muscles for soreness.

Snap! I've just done w1r3 and felt like I was struggling for the first few runs, although my pace was faster as I completed a slightly longer route 90seconds quicker than on run 2.
BIWI · 29/04/2021 20:05

W9R2 completed.

Only one more to go! Shock

WhereAreWeNow · 29/04/2021 20:28

Well done @BIWI. I hope you've got a nice reward planned for when you graduate.

redcandlelight · 29/04/2021 20:29

nah biwi
it's just the start.

Can anyone clear this up for me: why do most runners use K but marathons are still run in miles?
(apart from K sounding like lots more Grin)

redcandlelight · 29/04/2021 20:35

I'm purely metrical. a marathon is 42.2 k to me :)
I get confused with feet and stones...

OP posts:
DenisetheMenace · 29/04/2021 20:59

Thanks, redcandkelight.
You’re the first person who has ever been able to tell me what a marathon is in K, of any age.

I’ve only ever managed one, and that was a walking one (the Moonwalk, good time though, just over 6 hours, stealth boast)

From hereonin, I shall say I walked 42.2 K, sounds far more impressive 😁

redcandlelight · 29/04/2021 21:03

maybe I should start weighing myself in stones - a much lower number than kg

OP posts:
BIWI · 29/04/2021 21:23

I prefer to weigh in pounds. The scales seem to move much more quickly than when you're weighing in kilos!

fellrunner85 · 29/04/2021 21:25

Can anyone clear this up for me: why do most runners use K but marathons are still run in miles?

Most runners use miles IME. Yes there are 5k and 10k races, but most people train in miles. And of course half and full marathons are in miles.
I still can't work out km and mentally convert 5k and 10k races into miles while I'm running!

randomsabreuse · 29/04/2021 21:34

5 and 10ks are nice round numbers for pacing if you work in km. I can't remember what pace a sub 60 minute 10k would be in miles (?around 9.35??) but it's an easy 6 min/km benchmark. That pesky 0.2 mile always throws my calculations out, not that I can do maths while wanting to die/stop/throw up when running!

Maerchentante · 29/04/2021 21:52

After doing C25K two years ago, I ran until winter came, picked it up again last year and then stopped completely towards the end of lockdown 1.
I started C25K again in late February, but just as I was about to finish I had the vaccine, suffered a bit with the side effects, then suddenly had a very low heart rate and did not feel like running (or walking) much at all.
Cardiology have given me the all clear two weeks ago, so re-did week two and now only have one run left in week 3.
W3R2 this morning and it was slow going. I just felt very tired

I know I can do it, I've done it before, but it feels like I've got a long road ahead. There is also the small fact that last time I was about 10kg or so lighter.

WhereAreWeNow · 30/04/2021 16:57

@Maerchentante like you I did c25k several years ago, got into a routine of regular runs, and then stopped (winter, sore knee...). You'll get through the programme before you know it.
I'm interested in your experience of the vaccine. I had mine yesterday and feel like I've been hit by a bus. I'm so achey, it hurts to walk. I was planning to run tomorrow morning but I don't know if I'll be able to. I'm worried this will undo some of the progress I'd been making Sad

redcandlelight · 30/04/2021 17:12

where I hope you feel better soon!
don't worry if you have to pause for a week, you will get back into it soon.

märchen love your username!

I started c52k a year ago. still running. not fast and definitely not elegant. but I really like it.
