Thank you! It still feels amazing to know I can run for 30 minutes without stopping. Back in March when I started again, it seemed like I'd never achieve it.

Still can't say I enjoy it, mind Grin

But will continue doing it to keep myself mobile/flexible

KarmaViolet · 27/04/2021 14:55

@Shorthairlady

Is there any way to turn off the "you're halfway thru your run", "you've got 60 seconds left". I find them really disheartening when I'm struggling with a run. Would much rather hear I've completed the run rather than realising I still have a way to go. Hope that makes sense.
Oh I quite liked those! My brain always followed it with "if you can fill the unforgiving minute / With sixty seconds worth of distance run" Grin
KarmaViolet · 27/04/2021 14:57

Themadcatparade I get sore knees in a similar way. I'm using Yoga With Adriene and she has a "yoga for knees" session and the hips and lower back one is also good, because stiff hips seem to put more pressure on my knees when I'm running too.

WhereAreWeNow · 27/04/2021 18:33

@Themadcatparade I had sore knees at the beginning too. I started doing strengthening exercises on non running days (Google 'NHS strengthening exercises for runners' for a great plan) and the problem disappeared.

@teaandbiscuitsforme do you have running shoes or orthotics designed for your PF?

Talksunderwater · 27/04/2021 20:07

Well, this morning I tried the interval training someone suggested - using the C25K programme but jogging with sprint intervals. OMG it was HARD. I was feeling pretty cool at first as I could jog comfortably between the first 3 (of 8) sprints...but then it all went pear shaped. After the 4th sprint, I needed to walk the 90s interval as I was panting so hard and all I could think was “HELP, there are 4 more sprints and it’s all uphill now!” Shock I totally misjudged my route as it was uphill home after the 4th sprint. I had to walk the rest of the intervals between the sprints but I did manage to jog the cool down. I will really need to psych myself up to do that again!

WhereAreWeNow · 27/04/2021 20:11

@Talksunderwater I feel your pain. I did the Stepping Stones intervals podcast and really enjoyed the sprints but got very tired very quickly and was shocked to hear myself wheezing over the podcast. I don't have asthma but that's what it sounded like Blush

randomsabreuse · 27/04/2021 20:27

Walking between sprints is fine. It also helps to reset to a sensible jog- if I'm not careful I end up "jogging" at a decent 5k pace rather than easy! Walking for 20s of my rest interval then setting off steady and winding up the speed for the last 5-10s of the rest period works better for me (and helps me find my target pace with the GPS lag).

emilyjeff · 27/04/2021 21:05

I didn't run this morning :( woke up at 5.30am when DH got up for work with a banging headache. Haven't felt right all day tbh, going to bed shortly so hoping I'll feel better tomorrow and do my planned run then instead.

I don't where - I think I need some now! I got some new asics when I was on week 3 because I knew I needed new trainers but I didn't want to spend loads until I knew I was going to keep running. It was before the shops reopened so I just ordered them online but it going to try to get an appointment at a running shop and see what they suggest.

Haggisfish · 27/04/2021 22:07

I managed to run for twenty minutes tonight!! Without stopping! Week five, run three. Utterly chuffed to bits. Keep going those in the early weeks-never did I think I could do twenty minutes without stopping but I did!

Cavagirl · 27/04/2021 23:22

Well done Haggis !!!

Cavagirl · 27/04/2021 23:22

Just been reading this which rather puts things into perspective!

Although can definitely relate to her post-run interview "Normally I'm just running as fast as I can and just waiting for it to be over"
I hear you!

Told you! Brilliant Flowers
LatinforTelly · 27/04/2021 23:55

Haggisfish I think that's the hardest step in the whole programme (am just about to start week 9). I was DREADING that 20 min run. Well done you - imo the steps up are easier from now on.

Talksunderwater · 28/04/2021 08:14

Well done @Haggisfish Star - such a great feeling to complete that run!

teaandbiscuitsforme · 28/04/2021 11:51

Well done Haggis! That run looks so intimidating when you first start but it's amazing when you do it!

Themadcatparade · 28/04/2021 11:58

@BIWI @KarmaViolet @WhereAreWeNow

Thank you, and yes I was considering yoga for some more stretching before I go, I do feel I’m not warming up properly the 5 minute brisk walk doesn’t seem enough. I am swimming at the moment too so I’m hoping that helps strengthen me a little. At the minute I am having a cold blast when I get home, lots of massage and ibuprofen. I will look in to the knee strengthening exercises it makes a lot of sense to do them doesn’t it!

KarmaViolet · 28/04/2021 15:45

Went out today really not in the right frame of mind. Did 30 mins. Got to 4k. Gave up, logged it, and walked home! Fastest 4k I've done though so maybe dragging myself out grumbling had some benefit.

redcandlelight · 28/04/2021 16:16

karma looks like it was hard for a reason!

5k today in 31 min
I didn't feel like going but am pleased I did. and now I ponder if I could have crashed the 30min...

cat generally some strength training and streches in between running days are a good idea.

clams and super-slow-mo stairs are my 'favourites'.

Evening ladies, still didn't run this morning! Lost my mojo a bit I think. Ended up doing a quick 2.5km tonight with both my dogs! They were actually pretty good but I realised how much you need to use your arms whilst running.
Anyway I'm going away Friday until Tuesday caravanning again so hoping to get a couple of runs in while away. I like exploring different routes so that should help restore my running mojo!

Talksunderwater · 28/04/2021 21:23

Looking for views on running shorts please. I have been running in 3/4 leggings but am thinking of warmer weather and what to wear running. 5km is my usual distance so I don’t need performance shorts (if there is such a thing?) - just whatever is comfortable and practical. I’d like to know whether to get the type that look like bike shorts or the type that athletes wear (the squarer, looser ones). All are a bit terrifying tbh as I’m not a spring chicken and haven’t worn any shorts of any kind for years. What do others recommend?

Onedropbeat · 28/04/2021 21:27

I’ve missed out on a week of runs now thanks to a terribly heavy period that nothing can contain and a very sickly baby.

Hoping to get back to it in the next few days. I feel very sluggish at the moment
