Nope, I can't hold a conversation at my steady pace either. I don't know if that means I'm going too fast or if I'm just really unfit Blush

Haggisfish · 23/04/2021 21:42

@KarmaViolet-that’s fab well done! @WhereAreWeNow -I can’t sustain conversation either. I think it will come with time.

fellrunner85 · 23/04/2021 22:36

It does come with time, yes - but generally the rule of thumb is, if you can't hold a conversation then your pace is too fast to be "steady" and is more of a tempo effort.

Back when I first finished c25k, though, I had one pace and it certainly wasn't conversational!

I only have one pace and it certainly isn’t conversational so it’s good to hear you were once the same @fellrunner85 - gives me reassurance and hope Smile

Morning everyone! Back from my 10k 😁
Wouldn't say I was loving running today but I did it. Just over 62 minutes so a little faster than my usual easy pace, but I maintained the same pace throughout. Pretty happy with that, not a pb but at least I'm back up to the distance. Its also made me realise that 10k will probably be about my limit distance wise, it seemed such a long way!! Probably didn't help that it was an out and back not a circular route.
With regard to the talking whilst running it will definitely come as you get fitter. When I run now at my easy pace I'm not really out of breath at all. Breathing/ energise wise I could easily have gone further today it was just my legs that were aching and glad to stop!

teaandbiscuitsforme · 24/04/2021 10:59

Emily 10k in an hour seems amazing to me!!

Had my first run fail today. I decided to just do another week 9 run. I was a bit stressed because I had to take the DC to their club and run with the dog from there in order to fit a dog walk in this morning. Felt the pressure to be back on time and I was also worried whether my youngest would go in as it's only his second week and no adults are allowed into the building yet! I had a vague route in my head although I don't the area so I knew I'd have to keep checking a map! I sort of ran my route but I ended up running (walking!!) along the verge of the main road for about 1km looking through the high fence and trees at the footpath I was supposed to be on!! So I didn't run for 30 mins and I didn't really enjoy but hopefully I now know my route for next Saturday!!

WhereAreWeNow · 24/04/2021 11:26

Well done @emilyjeff. 10k in an hour sounds good to me. 10k full stop sounds good to me! My limit seems to be 6k.

KarmaViolet · 24/04/2021 12:44

Well done @emilyjeff!

I did my 6k - took me 49 minutes though so not far off your 10k pace!

Shopgirl1 · 24/04/2021 14:28

I did W9 R2 this morning. It was warm and I was slower than on Thursday, only managed 4.6k, but I think I’d more in the tank, I sprinted the last 30 seconds.
Next week I think I’ll start just aiming for 5km and aim to get my time down on that.
Enjoy your runs all, lovely day for it here anyway.

KarmaViolet · 24/04/2021 15:00

By which I mean you’re nearly twice as fast as me, not that I’m nearly at your pace. That came out ambiguous hopefully you knew what I meant!
redcandlelight · 24/04/2021 15:25

yes, great weather for a run today.

I did 7.4 km today in 48 min. it felt really good!
and I was able to have a short chat with a fellow jogger whose dog got confused and ran with me for a while.

I find your tips really helpful, fellrunner85, thanks.

I am just on week 8 (putting off run 3 to tomorrow so have spaced out runs this week a bit) and my only "conversation" last run was on the bastard hill I finish on shouting "when will this be over?!" Grin

Well done everyone on your runs. teaandbiscuitsforme that's brave running a new route during a kids' activity!

Aftertheharvest · 24/04/2021 21:14

Hello everyone - I am now regularly running 5k, although I would like to run most days I have been strict in sticking to alternative days so far. I know rest days are important but has anyone experience of running 5k 5 times a week?

fellrunner85 · 24/04/2021 21:24

I run a lot more than 5k 5x a week if that helps at all, @Aftertheharvest ? It's really not crucial to get a rest day after every run, although I do try to have an easy day after my long run.

Aftertheharvest · 24/04/2021 21:28

Thanks @fellrunner85 was hoping for short distances would be fine to do. My worry is getting injured etc and then not being able to do at all!

randomsabreuse · 24/04/2021 21:52

I struggle with running more than 5 times a week, definitely need a day off "impact" exercise but I'm probably 15kg overweight and more like 20kg off a distance running weight.

I like having 4 runs on my plan because it gives more flexibility to juggle with life getting in the way (DH's on call and random kid stuff getting in the way). I sometimes do an "extra" run. It is also better motivation wise for me to do more than the plan than less.

emilyjeff · 25/04/2021 08:58

Thanks everyone ☺ and haha yes @KarmaViolet I knew what you meant!
Legs are feeling a little achy this morning. Going to take the dogs out for a walk in a min, think its better to keep moving than rest completely

WhereAreWeNow · 25/04/2021 09:07

I was inspired by some of you running longer distances so decided to keep on going when I got to the end of my usual run this morning. I did 7k! That is the furthest I've ever run in my life!

I averaged 6mins 5secs/km which is slower than my recent times (around 5mins 40secs) but I don't think I could have gone the extra distance at my usual pace.

Feeling very happy and knackered Grin

redcandlelight · 25/04/2021 09:11

well done where that's still quite fast though. you must be very pleased with that.

WhereAreWeNow · 25/04/2021 09:31

So pleased @redcandlelight Smile

I remember when I graduated in March saying on here that I had no desire to run longer distances and that 5k was the furthest I planned to run. One of the more experienced runners - I can't remember who now - said they remembered thinking that but they're now hooked on longer runs. I didn't ever think that would be me but now I find myself thinking maybe I do want to run 10 k after all.... Maybe I'm hooked!

randomsabreuse · 25/04/2021 11:22

I'm just back from a chatty 10k with a friend. We've got children a very similar age and have the same main sport. Chatting made me realise why I like running longer distances - and why I hated running as a teen. I love exploring on my runs, and the further I can run the more interesting places I can visit. Growing up there wasn't anywhere nice to run then I lived in Birmingham and London. Started getting interested in running in Devon but roads were narrow with high hedges and paths were basically mud pits most of the year! Eventually discovered parkrun and running clubs when I moved again but now I'm in the Glasgow suburbs I'm loving the network of flat off road paths available. I will never love evening easy short runs around the lit pavements, but can now accept them as the way I can stay fit enough to explore my local area (and further afield)

randomsabreuse · 25/04/2021 11:36

Interestingly we could both hold a conversation at a "threshold" heart rate. We're also naturally competitive so kept each other going... I have really missed running in company!

Shopgirl1 · 25/04/2021 15:15

I’ve just graduated I think...W9 R3 completed! Am going to do the week 9 run for my runs next week though, I’m not ready to run without Laura yet.

BIWI · 25/04/2021 15:38

Well done @Shopgirl1!

I should have done my first week 9 run today, but I was up too late and a bit hungover from a long night chatting and drinking with DS1 last night Blush

(DS1 is an adult, before anyone reports me to SS Grin)

Talksunderwater · 25/04/2021 15:50

Well done @Shopgirl1 - congratulations!
I had a nice 5km run this morning except that it was quite windy. Weirdly, this seems to have made me slower (or I was just slower Hmm). I’m going to try running intervals before work one day this week and see how I get on.
