@BIWI I didn't explain it very well - I mean I want to be able to do 5k actually running, so 5.5k total, not 0.5k walk then 4.5k run which is what I did today. I don't mean I want to completely abandon the warm up!
Oh right! See what you mean Smile

It never occurred to me to include the walk at the beginning!

orzo15 · 09/04/2021 09:44

Hi everyone! How is everyone's running going at the moment? I did week 7 run 1 yesterday, 25 minutes and I couldn't believe how easy it felt relative to previous runs. I think it's definitely a mental barrier part of the time! I'm even thinking about when I finish trying to go from 5 k to 10 k as I'm loving the challenge aspects of it so much.

The only thing I'm concerned about it is I am pretty slow and not sure how exactly to build that up and also how important that is at this stage?

BIWI · 09/04/2021 09:46

I do that run tomorrow @orzo15! I know I'm slow, but I'm not worrying about time at the moment. Just concentrating on building up my stamina and curbing the heavy breathing a little!

foodtoorder · 09/04/2021 09:48

Great work @orzo15 !
I wish I could say it feels easy. I am just about to take on w8r3 and it has been far from easy for the last few.
I'm not sure speed matters at this point, it's keeping going and covering the distance- according to Laura on the app anyway!

I anticipate finishing c25k in the next week or 2 and feel like I will need to do a 10k plan to keep me at it. It's been a great focus since I started and if I had to keep repeating it will get boring. Although I do think I might go back a few weeks and do 2 15min runs or something like that to see if it improves my speed.

schoolcook · 09/04/2021 11:31

Morning all I'm very jealous of those of you who ran today.
I was kept awake last night so didn't run this morning and it doesn't work for me to do it later in the day so I'll do it tomorrow.

For me personally when I finished C25K I first worked on actually achieving 5K no matter how long it took.

Once I'd cracked it I did it 3 mornings a week before work and then every weekend I added one km a week.

I figured if I could run 5K then 6K was only 7 more minutes. I built it up from there so within the long month of January I'd gone from 5-10K.

I did later use an app for C210K but my method worked fine and I now consider 10K fairly comfortable (not easy).

I think you have to push yourself at a rate that works for you though and most importantly keep enjoying it !

orzo15 · 09/04/2021 11:39

They sound like good strategies! I think adding a little on once I've gotten used to doing 5 k regularly is a good way to go. It does really helps having a goal. I haven't quite got in a groove of time of day to run yet, I like the morning and knowing it's done for the day then but also last night I ran just before tea and it was nice to get a shower and get into pjs early and just chill then!

BIWI · 09/04/2021 12:22

Each of the two times I've completed the C25K I've failed to keep going. First time was because I got a new job that meant I was no longer WFH, and so it was harder to fit a run in, especially in the autumn/winter with the dark mornings.

Second time around I stopped because it got too hot! And then, of course, lost all fitness and couldn't face re-starting when it got cooler.

This time around, I'm hoping to keep going with 30 minute runs. I'm genuinely not interested in running for any longer - 30 minutes is an easy length of time to fit in (also allows for the 5 minutes before/5 minutes after, as well as a drive to the park where I prefer to run).

I think I'll focus on getting the distance longer in the 30 minutes. But I reckon combining 3 runs a week with 2 PT sessions in the gym should keep me fit and - hopefully! - flexible.

teaandbiscuitsforme · 09/04/2021 13:02

I've been contemplating what the do when I've finished the programme as well. I'm really worried that without a plan I'm going to find I stop. I like the ticking off the runs on the app and knowing what's coming up next!

My aim is to keep running 30 mins at least 3 times a week. I'd like to run 5k but distances are definitely less important than regular running. Also long term I need to think about how I'll actually fit it in because that will be an excuse to stop. Due to circumstances I've taken a sabbatical from work for a few months so I'm at home but normally I work full time with 2DC 4&5 and DH works away. Normally I have no time to myself to pop out for a run for half an hour!

randomsabreuse · 09/04/2021 13:11

@BIWI

That sounds like a good plan to me.

I'm very much a box ticker and am motivated by "improvements". Which isn't ideal for running as you generally need a variety of efforts each week, mostly easy! So I have a "training plan" that for long term "improvement"

@orzo15

I like having a variety of times to run. Early morning is good for setting me up for the day, especially if it's a fast run but a steady run after a hectic day with the kids not listening is really good for clearing the head. I have to juggle my plans around DH's work anyway so might have to do first thing before his work then not be free until the following evening.

AlrightTreacle · 09/04/2021 13:16

I haven't completed C25K yet: repeating week 4 for the second time atm, but I am planning on trying an app called 'Zombies, Run!' after I finally complete it and can run for 30 minutes. It has few training programmes, I'm planning on doing the '5k expert' one. It's 8 weeks long, but has six runs per week Shock, so it will probably take me twice as long to complete as I plan to hopefully run 3 - 4 times per week. Think six times per week might be a bit much for my dodgy knee! I just like the idea of having something to tick off to help keep me motivated after I finish.

That's looks good Treacle!

KarmaViolet · 09/04/2021 13:29

@AlrightTreacle I really like that app as you can use it over music. However since the sign of a person turning into a zombie starts with a bad cough I haven't felt the love for it this last year for some reason Grin

Mummyoply · 09/04/2021 14:01

What music do you listen to when running? I'm currently tying to sort a playlistSmile

KarmaViolet · 09/04/2021 14:11

I just use whatever Spotify running playlist comes to hand. Anything that disguises the sound of me breathing like rusty bagpipes being thrown downstairs.

redcandlelight · 09/04/2021 14:31

I don't like running to music.
I have a few podcasts I like listening though.

Mummyoply · 09/04/2021 15:54

@KarmaViolet Grin

I have found that running to music helps me get into a rhythm but not the music I usually like listening too. I need something a bit more punchy! Like 'Run the World' Beyoncé which is not something I'd usually listen to........

I've been listening to Radio 2 music from their Match your Mood section on the BBC Sounds app and found myself loving running to 'Bang Bang' by Arianna Grande and Jessie J - I'd never admit to that in Real Life! Grin

BIWI · 09/04/2021 15:57

I listen to podcasts now - my special favourite is Kermode & Mayo's film review, which is generally around 2 hours long, so will last for several runs.

I used to play my music, using what was on my phone, but putting it on shuffle. Fine in that it was my music, so all stuff I liked, but it's hard to maintain an even pace when the tracks switch between fast and slow!

Randommother · 09/04/2021 16:27

I've hurt my hip Sad. If I'm honest it's been a bit achy after running for the past couple of weeks, but I've kind of ignored it... It's beyond ignoring now though. Goggle tells me it's hip bursitis, and the treatment is rest, ice and stretching. It means I'm going to have to take few days off running, which I'm gutted about as mentally it feels like the wrong time to be taking a pause. Anyone else had this? Any tips on treatments that work?

redcandlelight · 09/04/2021 16:32

I have a 'niggly' hip.
for me running is ok though, it's walking that's an issue if I walk longer than an hour with the wrong kind of shoes.
as nothing was found physio recommended strength training (clams) and stretches and that seems to help.

I can't recommend seeing a physio strongly enough with any niggles.

OP posts:
BIWI · 09/04/2021 16:43

Do you have an osteopath or chiropracter that you use @Randommother? They might be able to help you.

But I also think I'd consult the GP just to be sure. It could be IT band syndrome

Rest sounds like a good idea - also, anti-inflammatories should help (aspirin or ibuprofen).

Don't worry about stopping now - you know you can do it, so you can easily get back into it when you're recovered. Flowers

redcandlelight · 09/04/2021 16:46

please no charlatan chiropracter.
at a push an acredited osteopath, but physio therapists are definitely the ones with the best training in anything muscle or bone related.

Evening ladies! Hadn't run since Tuesday, I've had to go into the office the last 2 days so couldn't get my morning run in. Anyway just been for an interval run, did 0.5k easy then 200m fast/ 200m easy x5 then 0.5k easy to finish off. Really enjoyed it, felt strong 💪

Randommother · 09/04/2021 20:22

Thanks everyone, I'll see if I can get a GP or physio appointment. Sounds like you had a good run @emilyjeff, I dont know where you are, but it's a lovely evening for it here!

Haggisfish · 09/04/2021 21:05

Oooh I did week three run two tonight and loved it. Even did an extra wee bit of running as my circuit was quite long!!
