Well done @Shopgirl1 and @teaandbiscuitsforme
I don’t run with my dog, mainly because it would be cheating as she would drag ma along given half the chance Grin might try it next week actually!!

teaandbiscuitsforme · 30/03/2021 14:39

Well done BIWI!

I'd rather not run with my dog really King. DH is away with work for the next few months so either I run with the dog or I walk the dog, run on my own and then walk the dog again around the school run and really I'm just too lazy for that! Grin

emilyjeff · 31/03/2021 09:37

I didn't do my 4 miles! 😒Phone was on charge so no music and was already quite warm when I set off so just did 3k, 1k easy/ 1k tempo/ 1k easy. It felt like hard work, dont really know why. And I realised I HATE running without music!!
Anyway decided to wait til fri for my 4 miles as will be off work and the weather will be cooler. Really looking forward to a 4 day weekend 🙂

KarmaViolet · 31/03/2021 10:00

W7R3 in the bag. Did a slightly different route today and it felt much better than the last one, although Strava tells me my speed and effort are pretty much identical.

I am feeling a bit dispirited though. It's taken me the whole of this year to get up to running for 25 minutes and I can now do about 4k including the warm up / down walks. I've been bad at sports since I was tiny - not just picked last for the netball team but active eye rolling from the rest of the class when they got stuck with me - and I've always been short and wheezy. DP is tall and athletic and has been since I've known her, she re-started running about three weeks ago and breezes round 7k in the same time. I'm partly delighted for her and partly still 8 years old watching the sporty girls and thinking "it's not fair!"

redcandlelight · 31/03/2021 10:07

karma have you been checked for asthma?

I have allergic asthma and have to be careful. most of the time a steroid nasal spray works for me. very rarely I need salbutamol.

I'm also one of those always picked last. it's awful isn't it. my parents didn't take me to drs as child. you know 'evil' pharma and all that...
only when I had to take a medical in secondary school for a school trip was I diagnosed and got treatment. being able to breathe is wonderful!

KarmaViolet · 31/03/2021 10:10

My parents thought asthma was "fashionable" Hmm so no, I was never checked. I always thought if I could run at all without keeling over I was probably just unfit not asthmatic though?

redcandlelight · 31/03/2021 10:12

might be worth a visit to the gp or asthma nurse.
being out of breath during after a run is normal, but what you describe seems worth investigating.

tizwozliz · 31/03/2021 10:33

Recommendations of cheap running tops for warmer weather? I just want a sleeveless t shirt without a racer back or lowcut front but struggling to find anything sub 30 quid.

KarmaViolet · 31/03/2021 10:34

I might speak to my GP then. The idea of being able to breathe freely while exercising is very appealing!

BIWI · 31/03/2021 10:56

@tizwozliz

Supermarkets are generally good for this kind of thing.

not quite sure about the message on this one, but you could always wear it inside out! Not bad for £10

Or this - £8 from Asda

longlivetheking · 31/03/2021 10:57

Also my DH is incredibly sporty and ran a marathon no probs, but does have asthma so better to rule it or or get treatment to manage?

Have you looked at places like Next and ASOS @tizwozliz? I got a vest from the 4505 range in the ASOS sale for under a tenner. H&M, Sainsbos etc all doing active wear now too

Olga83 · 31/03/2021 11:01

I am very fussy :-) I want a sleeveless t-shirt not a vest. The asda one I would call a vest as it doesn't cover shoulders.

BIWI · 31/03/2021 11:02

Or from Next, £15 @tizwozliz

fellrunner85 · 31/03/2021 11:11

@longlivetheking - I have severe asthma (to the point I got a Covid jab due to my asthma hospitalisations) but run marathons too. I find running has actually helped my asthma. For me, it was about accepting that feeling out of breath is totally normal, and only worrying if it didn't pass. At which stage I'll take my inhalers.

And in terms of cheap tops, you want Decathlon all the way. Supermarket prices, but a million times better quality. I prefer some of their Kalenji tops to my pricey Nike stuff. Please don't buy supermarket running kit - it's awful quality compared to what you can get at Decathlon just as cheaply.

fellrunner85 · 31/03/2021 11:18

Something like this, @olga83 ?
Sleeveless t shirt, only a fiver..

BIWI · 31/03/2021 11:22

Like @Olga83?! . £18

BIWI · 31/03/2021 11:23

Sorry - link fail!

here

longlivetheking · 31/03/2021 11:23

Thanks @fellrunner85 - I’ll check them out!

BIWI · 31/03/2021 11:24

Not true @fellrunner85 - stuff I've bought from either Asda or Sainsbury's has been brilliant and lasts for ages.

tizwozliz · 31/03/2021 11:34

The first place I looked was Decathlon, but couldn't see anything suitable. I have one very old top that is perfect, no sleeves, cut slightly longer at the back, but we normally only do one clothes wash a week so need extra. The ones with little short sleeves are no good, as the sleeves irritate me.

Talksunderwater · 31/03/2021 14:20

Well done to those of you who have been conquering W5R3 - a major achievement!
@KarmaViolet - definitely get the breathing checked out. As others have said, if it’s asthma it’s treatable so you’ll be able to manage it. My DS is not generally asthmatic but gets exercise-induced asthma if he overdoes it - now he knows this, he knows which sports require the use of his inhaler in advance (or afterwards) and when he’ll be fine. So, there are varying degrees of asthma (right up to the @fellrunner85 scary level - very sorry to hear about the hospitalisations).

redcandlelight · 31/03/2021 14:23

karma not wanting to scare you, but some heart issues also come with wheezing/shortness of breath as symptom.
go and get checked out.

as talks and fell say, asthma is usually very treatable.

Forgot to mention that I ran a different route this morning - same 4.5km distance but definitely harder as the hills were steeper. So, harder on the lungs going up and harder on the knees coming down! Not my most favourite run to date but I did it.

EmilyDickinson · 31/03/2021 14:32

I did my first full 5k in a year. It was quite warm and I felt like I plodded along but ended up doing my local Park Run course in 36 minutes something. My Strava app said I’d been working harder than usual so it wasn’t my imagination that it felt tough. It’s good to know I can do it though. Hopefully it will feel easier next time

EmilyDickinson · 31/03/2021 14:36

Is it worth getting the C210K App? Does anyone know what that programme is like? Is it similar to the C25K? I.e. you’re always doing the same chunk of time you just gradually increase the time spent running?
