emily
very well done.
your plan to get to 5k seems very sensible. goodluck!

@emilydickinson if you run for 30mins now, how far do you cover?

I would be tempted to up your time on feet by 2mins each time, but also add faster intervals into your run. Just little bursts for now - say have five "sprint to the next lamppost" intervals in each run. That way your body will get used to moving faster and, gradually, your overall "slow" pace will become quicker.

EmilyDickinson · 29/03/2021 17:25

I’m not really sure fellrunner. When I was doing Park Run a year ago my 5k time was about 34 minutes I think, but I think I was fitter then! The faster intervals sound like a good idea, especially as I’m using Strava so it tells me how fast I’m doing segments of my regular run

emilyjeff · 29/03/2021 18:01

Well done Emily, a fellow Emily! 😊
Rest day for me today although I have been riding this afternoon, weather was just too good not to. May do some yoga tonight too as not been doing much lately.
Next run for me is 4 miles tomorrow morning. I'm planning to head out as soon as DH leaves around 7.30am as I don't really want to be running in the heat, they're predicting 22c here tomorrow!

KarmaViolet · 29/03/2021 18:08

I’ve just done W7R2 after a week’s gap and it did not feel good! I did get round it though.

KarmaViolet · 29/03/2021 18:10

Well done Emily!

longlivetheking · 29/03/2021 18:50

Well done Emily & Karma!
I’m off for W7R1 tomorrow and I can’t say I’m much looking forward to it (massive understatement!) after yesterday.
Need to have a think about where I’m going to go and also remember to put DH’s watch on so I can gauge the time better!

Onedropbeat · 29/03/2021 18:53

Week 8 run 1 done

I pushed myself a litter faster on this one and really felt it

Next run Wednesday and going to take it a little easier

It was also noticeably hot out there this evening!

21 degrees today tomorrow and Wednesday and then it’s forecast for snow next Tuesday!!

teaandbiscuitsforme · 29/03/2021 19:55

@BobVance

Well done everyone on your runs! Love seeing everyone’s progress - and for those in the depths of scary W5 - keep going - it’s so worth it!

Welcome @Shopgirl1 Smile

Well done @longlivetheking on W6R3. Have you done yours yet @teaandbiscuitsforme ?

I’ve just come back from W6R3 myself and sat down, checked my Garmin and opened mumsnet to update you all - I love this little thread and it really helps motivate me!

In terms of how the run went - pretty well I think! I actually really enjoyed the first half - seemed to find a comfortable pace early on. I did have an unintended brief stop as I knocked one of my AirPods out of my ear but it was only the briefest of seconds and I was back on it. I had a rocky midsection though as I had a reasonably gradual but long incline to face but I made it.

The relief when Sarah told me the run was over was immense though Grin

Well done Bob!

I didn't end up running today - wasted the day waiting in for a delivery! I'll be going tomorrow, well after the school run and hopefully before it gets warm. I don't think I'm going to be a warm weather runner! Confused

redcandlelight · 29/03/2021 20:01

I fell off a bloody bike today!
testing a dutch bike.
turns out you can't position the pedals by back pedalling Blush
I hope my bruised arse is better in time for my run on wednesday.

Ouch!

Brainygaga · 29/03/2021 20:06

Hi everyone - please can I join in? i've just finished W4 and will start W5 on Weds. I've been stuck on W4 for a couple of weeks, i'm fine until the last minute of the last run and a couple of times I'm embarrassed to say i was sick when finishing- has anybody else had that? Anyway i've trained myself through it and found todays run fairly easy - i am dreading week 5 a bit though.

I haven't got the confidence to run outside yet so have completed thus far on the treadmill so that will be a bit of further training I need when I finally complete!

Well done to everybody - i've kept dipping in and out of this thread and it's kept me going. i am proud of getting this far because i have not really done any meaningful exercise in my adult life (i'm 42) and i have to say despite sick, sweat and pain i do feel much better for doing it.

redcandlelight · 29/03/2021 20:16

hi brainy

I only feel sick when I do intervalls or when I run with the teens and they want to get home quick

in short - take it a bit slower.

OP posts:
Cavagirl · 29/03/2021 20:28

Wow brainy that's dedication! Good luck on W5!

Has anyone got any suggestions of - for want of a better description - ways to make your legs better at running?

I'm finding I can run 5k in 32 minutes now and it's not really challenging from a cardio perspective (not a stealth boast I promise!) I'm not particularly out of breath - but my legs are so tired. Almost like after about 2km I don't have the strength to make them move any faster or push any harder, I'm just hanging on plodding around to the end and they just feel very....fatigued.

Feels a bit like lack of power? Do I need to do squats??

Brainygaga · 29/03/2021 20:38

@redcandlelight thank you, yes I am super slow now, but definitely still running. I figured I can work on the speed (much) further down the line when I have built my stamina a bit more.

emilyjeff · 29/03/2021 21:15

@Cavagirl sounds like you may need to work on strengthening your legs. I've been doing this the last couple of weeks and I think it's helping-

Shopgirl1 · 29/03/2021 22:22

I’m in awe of all of you in later weeks. I’m planning on doing W5 run 2 tomorrow and am a bit nervous. 8 minutes seems very long. I’ve managed all the runs until now though so hoping I’ll manage to struggle through. Run 3 is on my mind, will do that on Thursday all going well,

Cavagirl · 29/03/2021 22:30

@emilyjeff that looks just the ticket! Thank you!

longlivetheking · 30/03/2021 07:23

W7R1 completed!
I didn’t find it in any way easy let’s just say Blush

BIWI · 30/03/2021 09:29

But you did it! That's the most important thing. And if the C25K has taught me anything, it's that each run is building up your stamina so that the next one will be easier, if not quicker Smile

Girding my loins to do W5R3 later Shock

longlivetheking · 30/03/2021 09:45

Thanks @BIWI! I’m not worrying about speed just yet - just keeping alive mainly Grin.
Good luck for the Big One! I was so worried about it - and so bloody chuffed when I completed it!

Shopgirl1 · 30/03/2021 09:55

Week 5 run 2 completed. Found it pretty ok. Nerves building already for run 3 though...

EmilyDickinson · 30/03/2021 10:50

C25K is such a great programme. You improve almost imperceptibly and I’ve found that each run is a challenge but never more than I can cope with at the time and when I look back and see how far I’ve come since week one it’s really encouraging. Well done to everyone sticking at it whatever stage you’re at

teaandbiscuitsforme · 30/03/2021 11:33

I did W6R3 and I ended up running for the cool down walk as well! The first 5 mins was so hard but it was mainly uphill. Thought I was never going to make it to 25mins! But then I seemed to be ok. I was probably so slow though!

Does anybody else run with their dog? Had to stop a couple of times for him so I feel like I was cheating having those 'breaks'!

BIWI · 30/03/2021 11:52

I have tamed The Beast Grin

The last 5 minutes were definitely getting tough, especially as it's really warm today and the last bit was in full sun.

Almost looking forward to week 6 now, and the shorter runs!
