I'm a fat lazy slob! I'm constantly tired, grumpy, frumpy and frazzled! I'm mid forties, my hair has emigrated from my head to my multiple chins, and its time I actually started to turn my dumpy life around. Anyone want to join me? From the 1st January I'm going to start c25k using the NHS app. From 4th January I'll be giving up sugar. My aim is to get fit rather than slim, because I'm such an elephant that trying to set a weight goal will just demotivate me😂.
Everyone welcome.

Can I join too? I plan to do my first run today. I had my third DC 6 months ago and I want to lose the weight I put on during pregnancy, but more than that I want to improve my mental health and do something for me. It'll be tricky to try to fit the runs in, but I'm determined to do it.

Polkadotties · 01/01/2021 15:34

I need to restart. I got to week 4 last summer and then the really hot weather struck and I stopped.
I have a treadmill in my garage, far too conscious to run outside

Jfw82 · 01/01/2021 16:10

Another one joining - I completed it in April for first time but then lost motivation as locked down with a 3yp and 1yo. Have got too much fatter so am trying again. Redid weeks 4 and 5 in Sept but going back to week 1 this week. Have also signed up to a virtual challenge to cover the distance between lands end and John o'groats (walking or running counts) between today and 31 Dec hoping that gives me extra motivation to walk on non run days and to keep going once I complete the couch to 5k

Standrewsschool · 01/01/2021 16:22

@2fatbyfar

Thank you for posting. Just put the treadmill down and completed run 1. I wasn’t initially planning to start today but your post gave me the motivation.

Think I may celebrate by drinking left over Prosecco...!

idsisatwat · 01/01/2021 16:26

Have just done wk1 run 1. Am hoping to actually complete it this time.
@2fatbyfar thanks for starting this thread and giving me the inspiration to try again

allthesharks · 01/01/2021 17:52

I've just completed my first run. I didn't realise how unfit I was!

Musicalmistress · 01/01/2021 18:01

I did it during the first lockdown at 22stone & just came on to say - go for it!! Slow & steady will help you to complete all the run sections.
This video is fab & really helped me realise the benefits of going slower:

@2fatbyfar

marmitey have you managed to do the next run? The thing I find a challenge is having the days rest in between, I almost need to do it every day to keep momentum going. I also found it quite a jump from week two to week three!
Think of the days between runs as recovery days rather than rest days. When you're newish to running it creates micro tears in your muscles and they need time between runs to repair & lay down new tissue. It's a good idea to do other exercise on your non run days - Pilates & yoga are really good for strengthening & will benefit your running in the longer term.
Musicalmistress · 01/01/2021 18:05

@BillStickersIsInnocent

Can I join please? I’m really unfit. Started C25K this week, completed the first 3 runs. My ankles hurt 😞
Warm up your ankles before you go out - 'write' the alphabet with the toes of each foot making sure to get lots of ankle rotation. It made a massive difference to my achy ankles & I always do it before I go out now.
MrsM36 · 01/01/2021 18:15

Can I join in too? I got to week 8 run 3 in June but then fell over (not running) and hurt my foot & never went back to it! I did Week 1 Run 1 this morning and was pleasantly surprised - it felt ok. I'm another one who struggles with the rest days... almost feels like once I get started I need to keep going.

BillStickersIsInnocent · 01/01/2021 18:40

Thanks @Musicalmistress really useful tips.

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 01/01/2021 18:47

I did run 2 today.. my legs hurt!

Mumto3thatsme · 01/01/2021 18:52

I’m here too!
Started c25k this afternoon. First run p/walk did 4 kms. I’m fundraising for Gosh too, so hopefully weight loss, fitness improvement and money to a great cause 🤞🏻

feelingsadtoday2021 · 01/01/2021 19:24

Oh I think I would love to join I got up to week 5 before and just stopped

Will try and go over the weekend !

SpikySara · 01/01/2021 19:30

Ah I would love to do this but there’s nowhere I can safely run. By the time DH comes home from work to take the kids off my hands it’s already dark, and it’s not safe to go out alone in the dark.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 01/01/2021 19:41

@SpikySara Do you have a set of stairs. I've done C25k before when DD was very small, when I didn't have childcare I would walk up and down the stairs during the walk segments and star jumps /high knees/ bum kicks during the run sections. I figured it was all a form of interval training even if it wasn't exactly as intended.

HayleyBay · 01/01/2021 20:32

I'm tentatively joining. Just did my first run. Hoping it helps me tone up and lose weight. Currently 66.6kg and hoping to get back to 60kg this year.

IveNameChangedAgain2020 · 01/01/2021 22:31

@FoolsAssassin thank you so much for asking. Dr said she's not concerned and it will be the muscles in my chest causing the pain of course aggravated by the running. She said it's like getting leg cramp.

She prescribed some decent pain killers so feeling a bit better today. I will wait until I feel a much better and then will start again. I will do this! Perhaps start a bit slower next time!

As an aside, I love our NHS. I waited to call because I knew I was being a Pratt (and I know how busy they are). but the lady I spoke to was lovely and said with chest pain it's better to ask. I just have apologised 10000 times.

HenslowesDiary · 01/01/2021 22:40

Can I join you? Have never managed to join a C25k thread near enough to the beginning.

I did the plan about 7-8 years ago and ran slowly but regularly for a couple of years. Tried again in first lockdown and got to week 8 before giving up when weather got too hot Hmm.

This time round I have completed W1R2 with Michael Johnson. Sometimes I actually believe him when he tells me how well I am doing.

mofro · 01/01/2021 22:44

I’ve been meaning to do it all through lockdown so let’s do it! I’ll be out tomorrow if I can find my trainers - if not, might go out in my walking boots :)

AaronCardigan · 01/01/2021 23:14

I started today by just doing a walk, I'm so unfit! The backs of my legs started to ache. Has anyone got any tips to help?

tea69 · 01/01/2021 23:23

I did w1r1 today!

Lucked · 01/01/2021 23:23

Does nobody else have snow and treacherous ice? I am meant to be starting tomorrow but I think I am going to have to wait for a thaw. I drove to work today and the very few runners I saw out where all running on the roads as the pavements are a mess.

youngestisapsycho · 01/01/2021 23:55

I’ve just downloaded the app.... will give it a try!

Rgy3250999 · 02/01/2021 00:57

Did you manage to get out for your run @2fatbyfar? I have literally just finished C25K and never thought I would but it really is doable. Like you mentioned above, I found around week 5 that going out every other day was best for me. Before that, I would go every third day and by then, my body found it harder and my motivation was disappearing. I have really had to dig deep some nights, especially with the cold and ice but I know if I miss my allocated run day once, it becomes a slippery slope to not continue and I don’t want to have to redo all this. Most of the process is a mental thing, where we need to believe in ourselves and not listen to the man on our shoulder that tells us to stop. Get the 9 weeks done and it’ll soon be Spring!

To all that’s about to start this programme, imagine being a runner come Spring, when the warmer weather is here and you’ve already got yourself used to running 30+ mins and it will feel much easier by then. The alternative is Spring arriving and you remembering Christmas and wishing you had just started because you still haven’t cracked it. It’s such an achievement if you can dig deep and stick to a routine. Being really strict on days was so important for me because most of my excuses were silly and I felt so much better for completing it.

Best of luck!! X
