I'm a fat lazy slob! I'm constantly tired, grumpy, frumpy and frazzled! I'm mid forties, my hair has emigrated from my head to my multiple chins, and its time I actually started to turn my dumpy life around. Anyone want to join me? From the 1st January I'm going to start c25k using the NHS app. From 4th January I'll be giving up sugar. My aim is to get fit rather than slim, because I'm such an elephant that trying to set a weight goal will just demotivate me😂.
Everyone welcome.

Hello, room for another?
Wk1 run 2 today, I'm using Sarah Millican as a trainer as her voice is so lovely and I feel like she is about to offer tea and a biscuit at any moment.
My husband used c25k a few years ago and is now running regularly. I have often felt envious of him getting his 'me time' on a run while I am with the kids. But there has been nothing stopping me from doing the same except my own laziness and ability to always find an excuse.
Hoping that getting out and moving will help shift some weight, though eating a bit less will help too (once the Christmas chocolates have gone of course)

@MamaNewtNewt I completed the programme running first thing in the morning (so I couldn't back out) Mon/Wed/Fri in the 9weeks but it took another couple of weeks to get to 5k, and nowhere near within the magical 30mins, was just amazed I could do it!
A friend on another forum shared the link below & the average 5k times for women of any age are all above 36mins so for every one who can do it in 30 & under there are just as a many of us taking much longer 😁
After I got to 5k I tried to get faster for a bit but with all the extra weight I'm carrying at the mo (working on that too!) it became soul destroying. Decided I'm built for comfort not speed and decided to give distance a go. 2-3 short runs a week (30mins ish), sometimes intervals, sometimes hill work and then a longer run at the weekend, adding 0.5k each week or so. I was up to just about 9k when I fell ill in mid October & wasn't able to run for about 8weeks. Only recently back out & taking it very carefully between the snow & the issues with my breathing as a result of my illness but have managed a few tentative 4k. Going to try on the school playing field tomo as the snow/ice looks like it's here for a while!
Just be careful about running consecutive days if you're newish to running- it creates micro tears in your muscles and they need time in between runs to lay down new tissue. I did a bit of yoga/Pilates on my non run days as they're great for strengthening so will help with the running in the longer term. 😁

Musicalmistress · 02/01/2021 19:05

@MamaNewtNewt also mean to say - the title of the app is actually misleading. The programme is more about building stamina to run for 30mins than distance or speed but Couch to 30mins isn't as catchy a title! The reasoning being if you've built your stamina to run for 30mins then you should be able to build on that to get to 5k however long it takes - my first one was 50mins & I've never done it quicker than about 45mins but...I can run comfortably for well over an hour.

Well done to everyone who ran today.

I didn’t manage @TottiePlantagenet Xmas Sad I did a yoga work out as I’m doing red January. I just love sleeping too much and then it was sunny and sounded busy out.

Well done everyone. Keep going and it will become a routine eventually. No matter how slow or difficult it is, it is so much better than sitting on the sofa thinking about doing it x

Gathering the energy to start Week 2...

HenslowesDiary · 03/01/2021 09:58

W1 R3 today and I actually really enjoyed it. Wish I could bottle this feeling for days when I am making excuses!

The crunch will come next week when I am back to work and I won't want to run at 8am in case I am 'seen'. Although schools being closed may work in my favour here.

TottiePlantagenet · 03/01/2021 10:05

Don't be too harsh on yourself @PrincessMaryaBolkonskaya, today's a new day and all that...

Most of the battle is in our heads (certainly true for me) and that's a tough enemy to fight.

BillStickersIsInnocent · 03/01/2021 10:49

W2R1 done! Very muddy and hard going but pleased I’ve done it.

Notlostjustexploring · 03/01/2021 11:15

Can I sneak in here? Mostly to say thanks as just seeing the thread and the first few posts the other day gave me the kick up the bum to go out on my first session. And I'm just heading out the door for my second.

I'm especially grateful to the thread title. It's good to know I'm not alone!!!

Gliblet · 03/01/2021 11:38

W1R2 done - sunny this morning even though it was still a bit cold, so at least it wasn't icy on the ground. The muscles down the outsides of my calves hate me. I can almost hear them screaming 'no she's fucking not' whenever Sarah Millican says I'm doing well Grin

wheresmyhairytoe · 03/01/2021 12:05

W1R2 done, a bit slower than the first but I did it so pleased with myself!

PaddingtonB · 03/01/2021 13:26

It’s reassuring to know I’m not the only one with sore legs @Gliblet. I’ve only done one run but my legs are feeling it - and especially when I climb the stairs!

Gertie1983 · 03/01/2021 16:01

Can I join? I have never been the sporty type, always found an excuse to get out of PE at school but I have to do something or I will be fat and forty! Main goal is fitness and improving my mental health rather than weight loss though. Did W1 R3 today and didn’t enjoy it as much as the other two and now my hips are hurting Hmm I’m sooo unfit and desperately waiting for a decent sports bra to arrive! Well done everyone it’s definitely true that the biggest barrier is the one in your mind. I ended up with wet feet today, I run round a field next to my house as the tarmac hurts my knees but the downside is it was snowy and slushy and wet! Not sure what the answer is, do they make such a thing as waterproof trainers? I’m totally clueless lol!

FourTurnings · 03/01/2021 20:28

I have now tried drinking tons of water after my last two runs - downing two pints one after the other - and my legs don’t hairy nearly as much afterwards. I have no idea if hydration helps with muscle pain but it’s not do in nag me any harm anyway...

FourTurnings · 03/01/2021 20:29

Hurt not hairy!!!

2fatbyfar · 03/01/2021 20:29

Well done to everyone who's been getting out and about, I failed on the 1st! It was very icy and by the time it was no longer slippery underfoot the family wanted a walk...it was quite a walk so no running but good cardio exercise on steep hills (dc are like mountain goats the way they clamber up cliffs....gives me blooming palpitations watching them!).
Tried to go out today but my marvellous jogging bottoms kept falling down 😬😂 running with one hand on the waist band is not ideal, and in the end I gave up!
I will try again tomorrow! I have been more active though so I figure that's good!
It's great hearing from you all and really helps to keep me motivated so please keep updating me!
Tomorrow I start with my no sugar diet may be a challenge but needs must!

fourturnings I loved the hairy legs!

HayleyBay · 03/01/2021 20:40

Did my second run (in the house!). Not feeling like I'll ever be fit enough to run for half an hour at a time though. Already finding it tough. Hoping this thread will help me keep at it.

FourTurnings · 03/01/2021 20:44

Thanks 2fatbyfar it’s nice to be appreciated 😉😀

Standrewsschool · 03/01/2021 21:03

Done my second ‘run’ today. First third okay, second third was tough, and then the final run was okay again.

On my rest/recovery days, I intend to walk a mile extra a day - inspired by Great Ormond Street hospitals campaign to run Christmas off, and complete 31 miles in 31 days (intend to donate at end of month).

@HayleyBay - I don’t find it easy either, and when I have started before, have repeated weeks. The best I’ve ever got to is eight minutes running, at a time, but I concluded this was better than nothing, and 30 minutes exercise us better than nothing also.

AppleKatie · 04/01/2021 08:02

W2 R2 complete before work today. Phew.

HayleyBay · 04/01/2021 09:15

Anyone got a recommendation for a good sports bra? Don't need sore boobs as an excuse to stop!

PaddingtonB · 04/01/2021 09:22

W1 R2 completed today! It’s a cold and miserable day so impressed that I made it out.
