I'm a fat lazy slob! I'm constantly tired, grumpy, frumpy and frazzled! I'm mid forties, my hair has emigrated from my head to my multiple chins, and its time I actually started to turn my dumpy life around. Anyone want to join me? From the 1st January I'm going to start c25k using the NHS app. From 4th January I'll be giving up sugar. My aim is to get fit rather than slim, because I'm such an elephant that trying to set a weight goal will just demotivate me😂.
Everyone welcome.

Haven't been able to start week 3 due to huge amount of snow that fell on Sunday and is still compacted onto the pavements!! In normal times I would probably have gone for it but really can't cope with being told I'm callous and awful for going out in this weather and risking injury which will put such a strain on the NHS and probably kill people. Sorry - the whole world is just too much for me today - bloody hormones. The one time I really need exercise to help me and I can't get outside to do it!

theotherfossilsister · 26/01/2021 20:27

Hello, started week four but so badly I'm sure I'll have to repeat it. Going to do run two tomorrow and going out early in the hopes of avoiding people.

There was a woman on the beach the other day with her dog in one of those cheesewire extendable leads running the width of the beach from her. I had to run into the sea.

theotherfossilsister · 26/01/2021 20:29

@blobby10 hormones suck. They maybe you really depressed but also stop you doing anything about it for two days. If you're anything like me you'll have two days of awful horribleness which will lift when your period arrives.

AppleKatie · 27/01/2021 08:23

Hope the ice and freezing temps are clearing now for most.

I’ve just completed W5 R1! Reasonably comfortably. But apprehensive about R2 which includes an 8min run for the first time- but that’s Fridays problem 😂

Blobby10 · 27/01/2021 08:31

@theotherfossilsister thank you ! I feel better today as got my lazy arse out of bed and out for wk 3 r1! Hormones still raging and stomach really bloated but I don't feel likely to burst into tears at any minute. Its amazing the difference being able to do a little bit of exercise makes - still a bit of snow around here but I jogged on the roads which were clear and unoccupied at 5am! At 51 I'm hoping each month that this period and its associated hormones will be the last one - am I weird for actually looking forward to menopause?!! Grin

Blobby10 · 27/01/2021 08:32

AppleKatie well done!! I only did the 3 minute runs today but found them less difficult than expected - I have to force myself not to look at the next two runs or I will convince myself I can't do it without even trying!

pourmeanotherglass · 27/01/2021 16:11

Hi late joiner here. Just done W1R1. Was OK.
Ive not done c25k before, but have tried running on and off, did a charity 10k in 2010 and the 5k race for life around 2015. I've tried starting up again a couple of times in the last year, but overdid it too early, got discouraged/ injured and gave up. Have put on weight and am feeling very out of condition, so i thought id try starting slowly this time with c25k.
I used the NHS podcast today, but hadnt run with a phone before and found it a bit annoying. I need a better phone pocket i think. What do others use?

EsmeShelby · 27/01/2021 18:53

W1R2 tonight. I covered more ground as I was very unsure of my feet, the first time. So it felt harder.

fudgecat · 27/01/2021 20:26

Finally made it out for W3r3 after not being able to since last week because of the snow and ice. Found the first half tough but second half was much better. I even went a little bit further at the end of the second 3 min run which made me feel good about myself. Does anyone else try and squeeze a little bit more at the end of the run? I quite often set a goal of the next lamppost 😁

Blobby10 · 28/01/2021 11:29

fudgecat well done! And yes I try and do a bit more running too - mainly because I'm doing a 3 mile circuit and end up walking for about 15 minutes at the end - sometimes I get bored so add in another couple of jogs Grin. My goal is to count my left foot hitting the ground at least 100 times as that is running for about a minute.

Wk 3 r 2 completed this morning - my legs ache now! R3 tomorrow morning and possibly a cycle in the afternoon. Weekend weather forecast as snowing again so want to get out as much as I can in case the forecast is actually right!

Blobby10 · 28/01/2021 11:30

@2fatbyfar You started this thread ! - how are you doing with the diet/C25K program?

Wheresmycider · 28/01/2021 15:58

@pourmeanotherglass I nab my husbands running belt, clips round the waist with a zip pocket for the phone so its well out of the way.
They can be found on amazon for a few pounds.

HayleyBay · 28/01/2021 17:12

Finished week 5. Ran for TWENTY MINUTES! I actually can't believe I managed it. Before January 1st I'd never been jogging. If I can get to twenty minutes running then anyone can do it.

On the down side the weight loss isn't happening - I keep giving myself a (chocolate) reward for my hard work.

AppleKatie · 28/01/2021 18:46

@HayleyBay well done! That’s amazing! My app doesn’t have a 20min run in week 5 sounds tough!

I’m thinking ahead to what I might do post app. As literally every other time I’ve done this programme I get to the end and then don’t run again for two years 🙈

I’m thinking of doing the NHS app most of you are doing straight after my one but doing slow running (like I do now) in the walk sections and slightly faster running in the run sections in an effort to get my speed up so I can cover an actual 5k by the end of the second time through the programme. Does that sound mad or like it might work?

theotherfossilsister · 28/01/2021 19:45

You're all doing amazingly.

I completed week four today but was so slow I think I'm going to reeat at least one run. Maybe the whole week....

I knew I'd struggle at some point though

Sssloou · 28/01/2021 21:21

@Blobby10

Wk2 Run 3 completed this morning although it was a bit icy at 5.30!! Also had a headphone malfunction which meant I ended up running for an extra 2 minutes about 3/4 of the way round but hey ho😆

*wheresmyhairytoe" do you stretch after your runs? I find my quads need more stretching than my hamstrings when running but cycling its the other way around.

My left knee is playing up - I suspect its my meniscus as I had a similar problem with my right knee two years ago and had a small op on it - the consultant was totally against anyone running especially if even a little overweight due to the pressure it puts on your knees. I would willingly go to the gym or cycle over running but Covid and winter has put paid to that!

I had a lateral minicus tear a few years ago which required surgery......I am 3 stone over weight .... I walk loads - min 1hr pacy hike a day often a 2hr+ .... so I am mobile with a level of stamina. Started c25K today.... it was fine - taking it slow - v obvious that my CV fitness needs attention.

Worried about my knee now although any pressure I feel now seems to be under my knee rather than the side IYSWIM.....

Will do the rest days. But I was v pleased with myself ..... it really did lift my mood!

Sssloou · 28/01/2021 22:17

I also looked like a big beetroot - and that boiled gammon face look didn’t subside for at least an hour after - is that juts because I am v fair skinned / red head - or really unfit - or something else?

AppleKatie · 29/01/2021 10:09

Combination but probably mainly your fair skin.

I also go red and look like I’ve aged about 30 years after each run.

W5 D2 complete and it was definitely the first run that was the hardest today.

Blobby10 · 29/01/2021 13:33

Wk 3 r3 completed this morning - did 3 consecutive days and wouldn't recommend it as a regular occurrence! Knee holding up quite well now - I'm trying to go a little bit faster on the runs and it seems to be better.

And those who go red? I always have done - nothing to do with my fitness! I sweat like a pig whether it's dancing at a disco as a teen, or hiking across fields in my 20s or going to the gym or jogging/running/cycling now I'm in my 50s. I sweat profusely however fit I am. Grin I think of it as my fat cells crying Grin

EsmeShelby · 29/01/2021 18:26

W1R3 today and I feel very pleased with myself.

pourmeanotherglass · 30/01/2021 14:04

W1R2 today. Went without the phone and guessed the timings as same route as R1. Very muddy and had to paddle through a couple of deep puddles but was OK.
Not sure if Ill manage run 3 on Monday as i have a long day at work, so i might just add a hill detour to my cycle home from work instead.

Sssloou · 30/01/2021 15:51

W1R2 today.

Was anxious of slipping due to the rain. It was less difficult than the first run.

I push myself harder in the walking bits and am just delighted to keep moving on the running bits.

I am doing it with my fit DH - who is supporting me and he often walks alongside my jog bit or runs slightly in front zig zagging across the road covering more ground which sometimes makes me feel a bit rubbish. But I am glad he is there.

AppleKatie · 31/01/2021 10:05

Week 5 complete! #phew

Quite glad I’m not doing the NHS app because I couldn’t have run 20mins in one go today. 2x 8mins was a good challenge and there was definitely some mind over matter needed in the back half of the second run.

Roll on week 6 on Tuesday (2x10 mins 💪🤯🤦‍♀️😄)

ditavonteesed · 31/01/2021 11:15

So a bit late to the party but I'm starting this today with dd, mainly because dd is struggling with lockdown and getting really down. I have ordered some ear buds so we can wear one each and a bum bag, do I need anything else?

The biggest challenge is going to be a getting dd out.
I have organised when we can get out around my shifts for the next 5 weeks.
Just hoping she gets up soon s I'm itching to get going.

Chilver · 31/01/2021 23:00

W2R3 today. Really struggled this week. Cold, tired and very muddy. And my knee injury and shin splints that stopped me running 2 years ago is always niggling. And I'm so slow!!! Everyone was literally running past me today as I did my 4 stone overweight painfully slow jog Sad. I'll try again Tuesday and start W3R1.
