New thread needed! All runners welcome, whatever your pace or distance.
Cold icy run for me this morning, couple of exciting sliding episodes! Not a fan of the ice...

I've managed to avoid the rain so far this week (though Tuesday night was freezing!). That said it's raining enough at the moment that I'm rethinking my long run route for tomorrow to avoid some of the local muddy spots!

Spudlet · 11/12/2020 08:30

I think I’ve gone mad. I’m planning a marathon next summer 😱 I’ve got a 20 week training plan from a magazine which I’m thinking I’ll spread out over 30 weeks to allow for plans going awry. The furthest I’ve ever run is 11k and that was a while ago... I have gone mad, haven’t I?

emummy · 11/12/2020 08:42

Oh dear @Spudlet, you’ve caught the bug! Go for it, it’s totally doable. You’ve got tons of time to build up; as long as you are running consistently you’ll be fine. Which one are you hoping to do?

Well it’s not an official one - I was planning to run a half marathon this year to raise money for the hospice that cared for my grandpa when he passed away and obviously that was cancelled. So then I plotted a route from the hospice back to my grandparents’ house and it’s about 22 miles and well, in for a penny, in for a pound right...? I’m thinking to run it as close to his birthday as possible and try to raise some money for them doing it. It’s quite a scary idea, but then you should do things that scare you sometimes, right? 😬

emummy · 11/12/2020 10:04

Definitely! Sounds like a great idea, good luck!

Una I’m doing the lejog virtual challenge. I started in September so only a quarter of the way through but it is such a great motivator.
spudlet that sounds a lovely idea. Definitely go for it.
emummy glad the One world run went well.

UnaOfStormhold · 11/12/2020 21:17

IRun4Me it is really motivational! I have to say I'm enjoying the virtual scenery in the lake district a lot more than the A30 and various motorways up to this point.

Managed a very muddy and hilly 10 miler today, hard work but satisfying.

Well done on the virtual lejogs, sounds like fun!
Slow steady run for me this morning after a zoom drinks party last night. Went one of my favourite routes along the river.

Steady trail 10 ish. Making sure I keep some hills in. Definitely felt like less effort this week and back up to 1000ft without leg complaining more than usual.

Recovery week for me next week, need to be good and up the physio in the downtime.

Can anyone remember their first run?

I went out his morning at 6am for 45 minutes. I think I spent 15 minutes running in total and the rest just walking/trying to catch my breath.

Wondering when I will build up my stamina so I can enjoy it a bit more.

emummy · 12/12/2020 11:39

I did couch to 5k for the race for life. I remember being amazed at how hard it was to run for a whole minute. A few years later I restarted running; I ran 1.5k, which was the distance from my house to the edge of the village and back. It took me 15 minutes and I had to stop for a drink at halfway! Now I see 3 miles as a short run, most commonly run 5 or 6 miles and have done 3 marathons.
I think it’s just consistency and steady slow build up and gradually it feels easier and your endurance improves. Stick at it!

IRun4Me · 12/12/2020 15:34

I remember rainedere I used to do a loop from my house that is less than 3 miles. I can still remember the parts I had to stop at or walk. Then gradually those points became less and I realised I could run the whole circuit without stopping. And the same as emummy I now consider that a short route that I do when short of time or just want a quick run.
I dream of hills amaura
Very wet muddy run this morning. My feet were squelching in my shoes as I ran. But I did enjoy the run Grin

PaddingtonPaddington · 12/12/2020 20:15

My first run I struggled to run for 2 minutes. Similar to IRun had a just under 3 mile loop and can remember walking parts especially the hill. I built up slowly and steadily. Did my first ultra earlier this year.

Solo hilly run in the grey murky weather

I’ve signed up to a local charity challenge of running 50 miles in December. I’ve done 18 miles so far. I’m returning to running after having DD so my longest runs are only about 3 miles at the moment. So I’m upping my weekly mileage by chucking in an extra run so hopefully I’ll manage it before the 31st. Wish me luck!

emummy · 13/12/2020 10:23

Well done @TheBumbleNums, best of luck with that. Sounds like a great challenge.
Went out for planned 7 mile run up my favourite local hill, ended up doing just over 5. The weather forecast said the rain would go off - it lied. So I got to the top of this hill, it was foggy so no view, it's tipping down with rain, the path is a river, the skin on my thighs is numb and I realised I was not having any fun! I don't generally mind bad weather and tough runs, but today I just had had enough. So back down the hill, into the car, thanking God for seat warmers and home. Sitting now with coffee and mince pie, feeling much happier! I'm glad I went, and I still got good hill training (800 feet up in 2 miles!) .

Ugh that sounds miserable @emummy but well done for getting out and getting some miles in! I went round a local beauty spot today, it was muddy as hell after all the rain we’ve had, I very nearly stacked it right into a tree after slipping in some mud! I don’t know what I was thinking!

Amaura · 13/12/2020 14:28

Good luck @TheBumbleNums

We all have abandoned runs, it’s a sign of good sensible judgement which is definitely needed in our mountain runs

Rugby run today, made DD run in as she was being grumpy and wanted her warm before playing. Thankfully she cheered up within half a mile.

Coulddowithanap · 13/12/2020 15:08

@spudlet that sounds great. Think I might sign up for a marathon next year or year after.

Just did my first half marathon today. I've gone from struggling to run 1k to running 21k in around 8 months! Never though I would actually say I enjoy running lol

Amaura · 13/12/2020 15:10

Amazing, well done @Coulddowithanap

Half marathon is a lovely distance to be fit at.

Purpleraindeer · 13/12/2020 16:17

Wet, cold and muddy long run today. Urgh. Would have come back home early but by the time I realised how miserable it was I was half way so had to trudge on. At least my waterproof jacket was tested. Smile

Well done @Coulddowithanap that’s an amazing achievement! You should be proud!

Iamblossom · 13/12/2020 17:32

Hi all.

Runabout 20 to 25km a week, 5kms at a time usually, the occasional 10km at a weekend.

I have a pretty painful lower back most of the time, feels OK while I run but I suffer afterwards, have to do lots of stretching via yoga to combat it but liveable with. Seem to have pulled something in my right quad recently too though, so going to use the cross trainer in the gym tomorrow instead of my usual Monday morning run, and swim Tuesday, lay off running till Wednesday see if that helps.

Feel so jealous of those that can clock up miles and miles a week and for it to seemingly have no effect on their bodies! I'm only 45 fgs!

I'm at 19 miles so far this month.

Iamblossom · 13/12/2020 17:34

I'm confused about the bold number, is that your monthly tally in miles?
