Thanks @NCTDN , so you think so? It includes the warm up walks/warm down and an extra 5 mins I think as I didn't end close enough to the house. It feels a comfortable pace, I think...

Hedgehog26 · 22/06/2020 19:38

I include warm ups and downs just because the app does so there’s no playing about

RonBurgundyspanpipe · 22/06/2020 19:54

Hi, I can't keep up with this thread, it moves so fast but good to see so much support for one another.

I ran my first 5k ever today, it took 39 minutes so pretty slow but that was my strategy, slow it down and then slow it again. Most of my consolidation runs have been too fast and I've struggled to hit 30 minutes again And cut them short. I did lose confidence and didn't want to keep posting failures.

TryingToBeBold · 22/06/2020 19:55

@PrincessWatermelon my 20 min run including warm up and cool down was 3.65km so you did awesome!
@Murmurur thank you for the reassurance
I no longer track my warm up or cool down. But that's because ive got the ease of my watch now.

TryingToBeBold · 22/06/2020 19:57

@RonBurgundyspanpipe my first 5k was 40:40 and took 3 runs to get under 40, so you did well!

Sexnotgender · 22/06/2020 20:10

W4R1 done. My legs are tired😂 was doable though which was the main thing. The 2 5 minute runs were ok once I got into them, first minute or so was the hardest.

TryingToBeBold · 22/06/2020 20:15

Does anyone run after dinner? Evenings are going to work out better for me. How long are you waiting?

UnaOfStormhold · 22/06/2020 20:25

W2R1 done. Bit of a frustrating run after such a fun first week. I was trying a different route and found I had to stop and start a lot to cross roads and give pedestrians clearance. A pity as there was one lovely stretch through the woods which was really peaceful and nice underfoot, but maybe I can reach that another way. Also I really need those new shoes, starting to slip about which isn't ideal!

GuyFawkesDay · 22/06/2020 20:42

Slow, very slow...and very sweaty but I actually did it. And I actually enjoyed most of it!!! Whoop!!

Fantastic @GuyFawkesDay!
I'm really reassured seeing people around the same time as me!

I do. By the time I’ve put the baby to bed it usually ends up around 2 hours after I’ve eaten.
GuyFawkesDay · 22/06/2020 20:49

I just wanted to do it. I mean, I had one little walk as I have a migraine coming on (got the aura mid run and felt sick) but I was pleased just to complete it!!

I deliberately went steady, then steadier and steadier and actually really enjoyed it. Focussing on steady, correct running as I tip forwards and don't use my arms enough unless I focus on it. Went a different route, change of scenery always helps me too.

Blimey. Its been a long time since I ran that far!!!

What's the best app to track running? My phone is v low on storage.

RonBurgundyspanpipe · 22/06/2020 20:59

Thanks @TryingToBeBold, I now need to run that distance again!! I am pleased with the time but just wanted the distance. It's took me five consolidation runs to get my pace under control. I was about 25s a km slower and it made all the difference. I also wait 90 minutes after food but try to have something light. I do try to go before my evening meal though and eat later. I tried once after pizza and I just felt

@GuyFawkesDay well done, that's a similar time to me, you're slightly faster but nice to see how many calories we're burning. I could have written your second post, slower and then slower again plus a new route.

GuyFawkesDay · 22/06/2020 21:09

@RonBurgundyspanpipe absolutely agree. Congratulations on graduation!!

I messed up my first few tries at c25k over the years going way too fast. For me, the way to get the time is to go really slow, then gradually I seem to get naturally quicker as I get fitter? In week 5/6 I was regularly doing average 7:45/km, that was down to 7:05/km last week over 4km.

But the slower pace stops me getting a stitch and knackering myself. So next 5km I'll still put no pressure on time. Just get round. Hopefully in a few weeks I'll be closer to the 30 mins. I mean I'm never going to be quick, but a little faster would be good!!

@TryingToBeBold I did a run after dinner. We eat really early with the kids at around 5ish. I ran about 7. It was fine. Normal sized dinner

TryingToBeBold · 22/06/2020 21:50

@thickfast @Sexnotgender
I'll be aiming for half 7/8 start once baby is in bed and dinner at 5 so should be okay.

GuyFawkesDay · 22/06/2020 22:08

I've gone in the mornings but I'm ok in the evening as long as I haven't drunk too much tea or eaten within a couple of hours. I had cereal at 6pm and ran at 8pm tonight no issues

PrincessWatermelon · 22/06/2020 22:44

I haven't tried evening running yet. I really ought to, as currently I'm running early-ish - skipping breakfast and running about 8:30/9am. But this won't work once I'm back at work properly, and I don't want an excuse that "I can't run in the evening" to put me off.

More seasoned runners - what do you do when the evenings/mornings are darker?

UnaOfStormhold · 23/06/2020 06:34

Congratulations GuyFawkes. I was reading that the average 5k race time for women in the uk is 38 minutes (32 for men) so not at all slow! I think it is slightly misleading that the programme talks about 5k when it doesn't give most people, especially women, enough running time to actually do it.

Evening running is the only way I can do it time wise and it stops me just collapsing and doing nothing with my evening. My favourite route so far won't be an option other than in summer so I will be looking for a well-lit route when the evenings get darker.

ThickFast · 23/06/2020 07:15

I’m gonna be going this evening too. Got myself some new trainers so hoping they’re comfy. Nice to think a few of us will be running ‘together’ this eve

mumto2unicorns · 23/06/2020 08:23

Congratulations everyone. I'm meant to be going out today but don't think there is going to be a break in the rain but if I use that excuse I will never go out. Going to brave the rain

sleepwhenidie · 23/06/2020 08:54

mumto2unicorns I am reluctant to run in the rain but once your are in it (and as long as it isn’t torrential) I think it’s actually quite nice!

Sexnotgender · 23/06/2020 08:58

I don’t mind a run in light rain. I don’t want to be splashing through puddles though.

Stopthehop · 23/06/2020 09:22

Did wk 6 run 2 this morning. Had so many things go wrong. I was trying to get out quickly so I could get home and have breakfast before my work call at 8.30. The wireless headphones wouldn't work despite being charged so I had to find another pair, my Spotify app kept crashing so I couldn't play a podcast. I walk up and down a really steep hill on the warm up and cool down session I have always just finished the run before I get to it. Today I was coming towards the hill and I hadn't heard the voice telling me I had 60 seconds left so I ran up the hill and almost died. Then I looked at my phone and the couch 2 5k app had crashed too so I ran a lot further than the 10 minutes I was supposed to.
