I cannot think of anything worse than beach cross country, the sand!!! And yes @Sexnotgender I loved me a 200m race (starter block lane 1 or 2 if possible!) Amazing to see everyone on this thread who has graduated, gives real hope, well done to all of you! I managed the 25 mins today with a pace of about 6.38 - no clue what I should be aiming for at this stage?? Knees hurt though, wish I didn't have to run on pavements!!

granadagirl · 11/06/2020 19:24

My hubby was a runner, regular running club
I told him I was thinking about this, he said start on grass much easier

Hedgehog26 · 11/06/2020 19:26

Omg cross country on sand!!!

W2r2 for me today. I felt like everything was great today apart from my shin muscles which just seems to be sore and tight when I stopped each run. I stretch them after every run, and it’s not shin splints. Anything else I can do to stop them hurting or do I just need to wait for them to build up?

Sexnotgender · 11/06/2020 19:43

I run around a massive park and mix up the grass and pavement running. Don’t want to screw up my knees and hips when I’m just getting started.

imamearcat · 11/06/2020 19:44

I've been running a bit of a mix of grass and road (because I take the dog) I find it harder on the grass! I think there's always unevenness and it's not as springy. But I guess better on legs?

Sexnotgender · 11/06/2020 19:51

W2R2 done, felt really good. Long may it continue 😂

TryingToBeBold · 11/06/2020 19:59

I prefer running on tarmac any day! Grass is the devil. But everyone tells me it should be easier?

TryingToBeBold · 11/06/2020 20:00

@Hedgehog26 is it your shins or the back of your calves?
Early on the pain is quite normal I think

Hedgehog26 · 11/06/2020 20:03

@tryingtobebold definitely my shins, my calves feel fine. I think I’ll just have to carry on an concentrate on going slow so I don’t inflame them too much

GuyFawkesDay · 11/06/2020 20:05

I only get shin issues when my shoes aren't right. I get right calves, but that's just DOMS and goes within 24hrs

There are sports shops doing online gait analysis, I saw an advert for Warwick Sports for anyone Midlands based. Will do via video chat for you.

If you have pain, get your gait looked at. Get shoes that help you run straight. They stopped my shin issues and my on and off sore hip which I think was just translated rolling motion causes issues because i pronate.

Basically pregnancy hormones made my arches in my feet lower. So now I roll my foot outside edge to inside edge unless I have stability running shoes. I also can't wear ballet pumps etc.

Really interesting seeing people saying that they could run at school, even if it was short distances. I was always told I was rubbish at all athletics, which became a very effective way of making it a self fulfilling prophecy! It has completely prevented me from trying until a few weeks ago. I'm so pleased that I have broken through so many mental barriers to do this! I'm now on week 7 but for tte last 4 runs have just kept going for 5K. I'm not fast but slowly improving (36.04 was my one yesterday) but the fact that I'm doing it is so incredible (and unbelievable!) fir me!

GuyFawkesDay · 11/06/2020 20:30

It's amazing how those ideas if what we can and can't do are embedded in our heads as kids

LambChopsMcGee · 11/06/2020 20:36

Ohh can I join?? I've not RTFT, but in bed of some community! I'm only in week 1! Run 3 tomorrow.
I used to run at the gym a lot, max 5km though and not very fast. Trying to get back to exercise after my DD and a slight prolapse. I'm wearing the EVB shorts which make a difference. Someone up thread asked about prolapse... Meant to tag her in but I've forgotten her username.

I'm looking forward to my run. Never thought I'd utter that sentence!

LambChopsMcGee · 11/06/2020 20:36

Urgh... In need, not in bed.

Alamindah · 11/06/2020 20:51

Exactly @GuyFawkesDay I'm 51 now - definitely far too well ingrained!!

choc27 · 11/06/2020 22:44

I'm going to try running on grass for my first run back after ankle injury. I'm hoping it will be kinder on the ankle.

BookShop · 11/06/2020 22:51

Only 3.5km today. My plantar fasciitis is back. Haven’t had it for years. 🤯😔 lots of stretching tomorrow. Using a ball to release it. I’ll book some physio as soon as I can. In the meantime it’s easy running for me.

Sexnotgender · 11/06/2020 23:06

Urgh, plantar fasciitis is awful. I got it terribly in one foot when I was pregnant.

imamearcat · 12/06/2020 07:14

I did another 10K this morning so that's 42k in total this week!! Feeling proud of myself but also that I probably deserve an injury, although feeling ok at the mo.

Much much easier today, I ran mostly on the road (first couple of k on fields for the dog) which I do find easier and also my trainers were different. I've got ASICS which I love but they are a bit small so I bought some others but they are not very good. Not as springy? I wore those yesterday but went back to the ASICS today. Only problem is I've not got 2 pairs of worn trainers and neither are right!

GuyFawkesDay · 12/06/2020 07:20

@BookShop could be thecarch support level in your shoes. I get it if I wear flat based sandals or ballets flats. Arch issues.

Maybe try some orthotic insoles in both your day to day and running shoes (just move em about) as they really helped me when mine was bad.

Now I buy sensible Birkenstocks for summer instead 😣

I think I have shin splints.. my right leg is worse Sad
I've been in denial and running on them for two weeks but I know I dread going out knowing they'll hurt.
I read yesterday they should have healed or be better by now but because I've been running on them they're not.
I've been scared of losing my fitness but I have my 5k route. I know my km markers. And I've done it before (now). I've ran 5k 4 times. I can do it again.
But rest is what's needed I think.
I've just been in denial because I was only a couple of runs off graduating when it happened and then I've wanted to get PBS.
Feet up for me Sad

Sunshineandflipflops · 12/06/2020 08:26

I'm recovering from PF too so you have my sympathy - it's awful. It's the reason why I started C25k - to get me running again but gradually and not doing myself further damage. I now wear Birkenstocks for slippers around the house and if I go out I wear either my running trainers, walking boots or the Birkenstocks ( for short distances). I miss my lovely shoes but I could barely walk at one point so my feet are more important.

Sunshineandflipflops · 12/06/2020 08:27

I also ordered some supportive insoles from Amazon to wear in my trainers which are more fashion than sport based.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 12/06/2020 08:28

I’m desperate to run but I’ve hurt my neck. I can’t stretch my arms or turn my head without sharp pain, so I won’t be stressing it by running Sad. I’ve not run since Tuesday and that was only a short one, so I’m overdue and missing it. Frustrated empathy to my fellow ‘injureds’ Flowers.

Sunshineandflipflops · 12/06/2020 08:28

Well done @Imamearcat! Did you manage 10k without stopping? Make sure you have a couple of days rest now so that you don't injure yourself!
