This is a thread to talk about all things running and support each other through the highs and lows. All are welcome, from absolute beginners to experts!
We keep a running total of everyone's miles for the month, so feel free to add yours on. Current total for March is:

Well done Tri. Humidity is really tough for running. The sea swimming sounds lovely, I always enjoy that on holiday. Not so keen on doing it here though, the North Sea is less inviting than the Med!
First run of marathon training today, a steady 30 minutes in the woods with the dog.

Well done everyone.

I did 8.5 miles Sunday off road. Hated it. Nettles everywhere, got stung, brambles etc. Had to walk with a stick for a bit, beating them down.

I've remembered what I always preferred road running 😂

Went to go again today but felt tired and it felt like so much effort to go not very fast. So did a mile and came home.

Think perhaps going from no running to 20 - 25 miles a week was a bit ambitious 😬 so I'll have another rest day and try again tomorrow.

Easy but hilly run today in the sunshine. Chesney a wee rest sounds good! It can help to have an easier week every 3 or 4 weeks to let your body catch up. Your trail run sounds like an adventure!
Hope that hip flexor settles Tri

Hi from a very intermittent poster!

I've got a niggling ankle, and even after a weeks rest it niggled today when I tried a short run to see how it was (just under 2 miles, mainly flat, felt it go wrong on what was actually a minuscule incline). I'm going to have to rest for longer, aren't I?

I've got stretches to do, which I'm being quite good about doing. I've got new trainers (old ones were at >300 miles so might have been adding to the niggle - any excuse!) butjust want to get better!

I was planning a summer break anyhow, but was booked for one more Half before then. I'm feeling very pessimistic about that right now.

Anyone any guesses of how long it might take?

But I do have a few June miles to add - from before it all went wrong and thus morning

Sorry about your ankle AuntieStella. As well as stretches, do you do any strength training? Apologies if you do, I can't remember! I have heard a few physios interviewed recently on podcasts and there seems to be a move towards building muscle strength to support injured areas, rather than just rest and stretching. Hope it settles down soon for you.
Week one of marathon training continued with a short interval session today, it was quite nice!

That's a bit miserable about the ankle :(

I've been out for two runs today. The first was with dd to give her company as she started couch to 5k today. She did really well, especially given we couldn't quite work out when the app she was using was telling her to walk and run, so we did a lot more running than we should have done.

Then I went out for my own quick 5k. Not sure what distance to put altogether but I seem to have managed 7 miles of something. So I'll go for that.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 21/06/2019 15:28

Hope the ankle is better soon!

I did 5 miles Wednesday as a kind of tempo run. All went well. My fastest run since I started back.

Then 6 miles off road Thursday a bit steadier.

Rest day today

Yes, I do Pilates and a resistance band class for general strengthening. But perhaps I shouid be doing more.

I've just had my back dekinked, because it always helps if everything's straight. Done by an osteopath - think of the most brutal sports massage you've ever had, then add some specific extra torture pressure. I felt so much lighter afterwards!

I was planning a lighter month in the summer anyhow. Just wasn't expecting it yet!

I'll need to cheer myself up by entering some events for the autumn. I'm hoping to do at least 3 Halfs (one a month) from September

IRun4Me · 22/06/2019 08:23

Hope all the injuries and niggles are getting better.
Well done on all the achievements.
I’m in a bit of quandary about running at the moment. Life is in one of those incredibly busy periods with everyone needing something and so much going on. This coupled with peri menopausal insomnia means I’m totally exhausted. I know I need to run for my head and my physical health but some days I just don’t have the energy to run. But I miss it.
I don’t know to just keep pushing or actually have a bit of a rest. I’m still active and walk/cycle lots plus I try and do core work.
I wondered whether I need to actually draw up a plan? Set out rest days, running, plan in more yoga?? Apart from marathon training I’m an ad hoc runner.
Does anyone have an exercise plan? Does it work?

Alex3101 · 22/06/2019 10:42

I have a plan of sorts in that I have my running days planned out and then what I do varies depending on what events I've got and when they are.
Monday and Friday I do S&C sessions a week these consist of kettlebell work outs and extras like resistance band/gym ball etc.
Tuesday I train with my running club. I tend to do one of the endurance rather than speed sessions.
Thursday generally a zone 2 run (easy pace) for about an hour.
Saturday I generally do Parkrun or maybe a 10k, I use this as my speed work.
Sunday is long run day, this is a zone 2 run but is usually hilly so it's got efforts mixed in.
I do try and swim once a week but that's a bit hit and miss right now.
I keep it flexible though as my wife works on calls so I might swap days around. Also don't beat yourself up if you miss a day and if you are feeling tired give it a miss or take it easy.
5km for me this morning.

I think when you are very busy a plan can really help because it lets you look at your week and carve out protected time for particular activities. It's also helpful I think to then develop a routine so you don't have to think and make decisions so much. As Alex says though you still need to listen to your body & be flexible, do that if exercising one day would be too much you can take that day 'off' and not beat yourself up about it.
I run Tuesday, Thursday, Friday & Sunday, do bootcamp Wednesday, core exercises Saturday & walk the dog twice a day. I don't have to think about it now, I just do it automatically! It sounds as though you are keeping very active IRun whether you run or not. Remember to schedule in some time for sitting eating biscuits!

Did my first park run today! My official time was 29:14 which I’m really pleased with especially as I was stuck in a slow crowd for a while at the start.
I’d love to do it regularly but there are none within walking distance and it feels a bit wrong to drive to go for a run.
Respect to those who fit so much training into busy lives. I only work 2 days a week and feel like a slacker!

Alex3101 · 23/06/2019 18:19

So I forgot to mention that I use an online training/coaching website for training plans etc.
It's called train as one
www.trainasone.com
It's free or you can subscribe depending on what you need. It builds you a plan based on an event or events. I find it useful as it mixes things up a bit and it gives some structure.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/06/2019 19:48

Well done Miff, that's a great time!

That sounds interesting Alex.

3 mile quick jaunt for me, then 2.5 miles walk run with dd.

Alex3101 · 23/06/2019 20:36

Just to illustrate how it mixes things up this evening it had me doing 30 second sprints with 1 minute recovery 5 minute warm up and down. So that's 2 more miles.

I ran in Edinburgh yesterday for a change, Dd had a study day so down we went. I planned to run around Arthur's Seat but the race for Life was on, so ended up on a long wiggly run around random streets, visiting some old haunts from my uni years. Managed to avoid the busy tourist bits and had fun.

6am, 10k today as youngest was off school sick so DH was great encouraging me to go get my run in early then he went off to work a little later than normal when I got back. 5hrs on a Monday is my only time to myself so missing it with a child off school makes me go hummmm but she needs a clingy mummy day, so it was good to get a solid run in early Smile to boost my mental health (she’s not the easiest of child at the best of times Grin )

TriSkiRun99 · 25/06/2019 07:13

Early 5k but was very slow as so hot and humid even at 6am. I’m not a fan of running when it’s above 10c, I’m much more a winter runner. Smile

Heat & humidity not a problem here in Aberdeenshire! 13 degrees & light drizzle for my run today. And it's my birthday so I ran in my new, first ever running skort! It was very comfy, I like it. Short interval session today, now going to eat birthday cake.

Happy birthday emummy hope you have a gd day. We’ve at opposite ends of the country Smile it was drizzling as I ran this morning in Devon bit it was 18c. and I was glowing red when I finished my half hr round the block. Didn’t have time for a run on beach today ( I did yesterday & it was lovely).

Chesneyhawkes1 · 25/06/2019 18:10

Happy birthday!

I did 5 miles last night. So humid. Was horrible. The last 2 felt like there was no air to breathe.

Today I went out in the rain late morning and it was lovely. Did 9.3 miles around where I work.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/06/2019 20:55

8 steady miles today, but with a crazy hill thrown in. It was so humid it was misty. Bit overly knackered tonight.

Happy Birthday emummy!!!

Alex3101 · 25/06/2019 21:50

Good job on getting out on these hot sticky days.
I did a 5 mile hilly threshold run this evening which was tough in the humidity. I did a half mile warm down at the end and I'll be honest I didn't cool down much 😂

TriSkiRun99 · 26/06/2019 07:54

Early run to try and beat the heat and humidity but it was already 18c and very humid at 5.45am! Still I got in 8k run before work. There was no way I was going to attempt running tonight as I’d normally do a Wed night run.
