I’ve copied below from the last thread and I hope you don’t mind me joining you all!

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.

Buster that’s fab and scary...I’m still waiting, DH got the rejection mag this morning but nothing for me yet

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/10/2018 18:18

Amazing buster! Exciting and scary.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 08/10/2018 19:11

Rejected but that's probably a good thing as I have found training for this half so hard.

emummy · 08/10/2018 19:11

Woo-hoo Buster! London 2017 was my first marathon and it was an amazing experience. Congratulations!

BusterTheBulldog · 08/10/2018 22:45

Thanks everyone!

irvina, no not done it (or any marathon) before so it’s a bit daunting! Excited though!

emummy · 09/10/2018 08:08

First holiday run done, interval session along the coast. Must try to find a flat resort next time! Still beautiful morning & lovely to be running in vest and shorts again. And a nice soak for my feet in the pool at the end!

Well done emummy, looks lovely!!

SkiGirl007 · 09/10/2018 19:08

Finally got a No email from London marathon ballot this afternoon hohum I was a little sad & a bit relieved as I’ve been struggling with injury for few months, and had worked out I needed to run a HM easily by Dec to be able to get the miles in and I’m not sure I can tbh. Still I have a HM in Feb booked and DH is thinking of doing Southampton marathon instead which could be an option if my training goes well.

Managed another few miles now I've recovered from the cycling.

Congratulations to those of you with marathon places. I ran London 3 times and loved it. The support is 👌 and it is so well organised. I would love to do another marathon, maybe New York one day...

Not sure what training plans look like these days but I had my best time running 4/5 days a week with 2/3 (can't remember exactly) 20 milers. I managed 4hr 14min.

I had an epic disaster trying out what was relatively new at the time, a plan called run less run faster. It just didn't suit me at all. I ran out of steam well before the finish 🤦🏼‍♀️

OhNoGroken · 10/10/2018 22:19

@skigirl007 are you doing the Brighton half? Asking as it’s in feb and not far from Southampton.

Thanks everyone for the wet weather advice - luckily I haven’t needed it yet as it’s been so beautiful recently! If only this could last.

I’m having trouble with GPS tracking (live rurally) so here is the updated stats based on the best that I can measure/calculate from steps (anyone else have the same problem? Any tips?)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/10/2018 06:43

Oh no I’m not rural but I do find my gps is patchy, especially if I run in the early morning or if it’s very cloudy. My Fitbit will kick in if my phone tracker fails but it doesn’t give all the stats.

SkiGirl007 · 11/10/2018 06:58

Ohno no it’s not Brighton half as I’m in the SW Smile but DH has family near Soton so it’s a good one for him to run.

Did a 5k yesterday, was bit plodding I’ve lost all my speed since July but I’m just pleased I’m back running again. Aiming for 3xruns this week but weather looking pretty grim next few days. I don’t mind running in the rain but avoid the super windy days normally!

emummy · 11/10/2018 08:35

Nice steady run this morning, tried a different route but ran out of path so turned back.
OhNo are you tracking via your phone or a watch? I live rurally too and my TomTom watch is very reliable, while Mapmyrun on my phone was less so.

Nice club run on Tues night from me, and some decent intervals today. Don’t think I’ll do anything until Sunday’s half now. Maybe a tiny leg stretch on Sat.

Hope you’re enjoying your hols emummy!

I hate windy running too skigirl, unless it’s a tail wind of course! Wink

Mentioned earlier up the thread, registrations for RED January are now open. FAQS are here: www.mind.org.uk/get-involved/donate-or-fundraise/red-january-faqs/#medal and you can navigate to the registration page from there.

Thanks Buster, having a lovely time! Taking 2 teenagers & a 10 yr old to a water park today, what can go wrong?!
Tempo run this morning, hotter today so quite tough. Lovely sea views helped though

SkiGirl007 · 12/10/2018 08:54

Good luck at the water park! Assume you are in sunnier climes. it’s horrid here soaking wet school run &very windy so couldn’t use umbrella either Grin

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/10/2018 12:33

Grim run this morning, I could have wimped out but told myself it was mental training rather than physical! And obviously true to form, really glad I did it now.

I have a tiny bit of plantar pain and the side of my foot- any recommended stretches? Can I even stretch my feet??

SkiMum99 · 12/10/2018 13:35

Does rolling foot over a tennis ball help? Stretch it by standing on bottom step of stairs and dropping heel down? Brave running in these conditions full on gale force winds ere Grin

SkiMum99 · 12/10/2018 13:35

My daughter sits on her feet to stretch for trampolining- ie fold your feet under you bum sit like kneeling down

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/10/2018 14:04

Rolling it on a ball would be a good start, could do that while chilling out. Unfortunately it’s the consequence of running a lot with a bunion I think, it’s twisting my whole foot. I think I’m shifting my weight to my heel to avoid my toe joint.

It’s gale force here as well, but I have dropped a few Kms the last few weeks and I need to average 5 a day to hit my ridiculous target of 1500 this year. No way I was doing more than 5 though!!

anniehm · 12/10/2018 16:15

Hi looking for support - ran my first parkrun 2 weeks ago (after 3 aborted attempts not completing the final lap). Hardly a marathon but considering the only running I've done since 14 was for a bus or train im getting there. Any other overweight 40+ runners here?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/10/2018 17:02

Hi Annie, I was like you in December, I ran 1km and was sick! I’d never exercised before, was really unfit, 3 stone overweight. It would have been so easy to just never do it again, but I promised myself I would do 1.1km the next day, 1.2 the next etc- if that’s what it took.

So far this year my running total is over 1200 km and I’ve lost 3 stones.

You can totally do it- if I can, anyone can!!

MsMartini · 12/10/2018 18:07

Hello all, would love some advice for a newbie runner although my distances are tiny compared with many of you. I am 51, started running a few months ago for the first time on gym treadmill (which I don't like) and now run outside on tracks and grass in local parks. I am soooooo not a runner - I do lots of strength training and some gym classes. But I am quite enjoying it and would like to keep going, get a little faster and go a little further maybe, but not push myself too hard ( I do that with the other stuff I do and need recovery time). I am running 4k (takes about 26/27 minutes) 3 times a week, done 5k a few times and when I have time at the gym I do some sprints on the treadmill for ten mins or so before it makes me want to punch the walls. My times are very slowly getting better, my breathing is more controlled, and I feel OK. Is there anything else I should/could do? And does anyone have a recommendation for a warmish running jacket with zip pockets? Any tips gratefully received. I have a flipbelt which I love Smile

AnotherOtter · 12/10/2018 19:39

5.5 easy miles earlier this week and another 5.5 mile easy run today in Storm Callum. The met office was spot on in its forecast and got almost exactly an hour of dry weather so was very pleased. Just finished my cooldown when the lashing rain restarted.

Welcome to the newbies. I am pretty new too so no advice other than recommending the free NHS Couch 2 5K app that gets you from running 1 minute intervals to running for 30 minutes non-stop. Here it is for Apple iOS but it is also available on Android.
