Hi lovelies! I was just about to join the running thread and saw it was almost full and couldn’t find another
I’ve copied below from the last thread and I hope you don’t mind me joining you all!

This is the 12th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 10.2 for September

Best wishes

I’ve not run today, it’s been a weekend of birthday celebrations. Total for September is 144km (89 miles) which is lower than last months, although I have actively focussed on my rest days this month particularly after my long runs.

I aim to average 5km a day so my goal for October is 155km!

WElcome Huntly! I think enjoymentbis really key. You might find that putting less pressure on yourself makes you stronger & more consistent and so gradually faster. I have found I've just got gradually faster over time - I'll never be speedy, I'm usually about 2/3 of the way back in a race but the amount of work I would need to do to get a lot faster would take away the fun I think. That's my excuse anyway!

OneThingAndThenTheNext · 30/09/2018 19:09

Can I join please? I’m currently doing a 5-10K programme and love running! Never thought I’d say that! Definitely need to look at my diet as it’s not amazing for exercising, and does anyone have any tips for winter running gear please - what do you wear? I started in June and have never been a cold weather outside exerciser.

Huntlybyelection · 30/09/2018 19:32

That's exactly my thinking emummy!

I have been running for quite a while but my enjoyment is higher when I take the pressure off.

AnotherOtter · 30/09/2018 19:42

Was on the old thread but fell off. Thanks for the new thread. Well done annie, that was a brilliant moment for me too. I have imposter syndrome when it comes to running as I feel like what I do "doesn't count" as real running which is nonsense really.

Easy 5.5 miles then nothing for nearly a fortnight until a 5k today. Longest time that I've not run since I started in the spring. Was really hard to get out today and noticed the reduced fitness as was a fair bit slower and it still felt harder.

Welcome OneThing! We all vary in what we wear in winter, I think it depends on how hot you get running. I like lots of layers so I can strip off when I warm up. So I have separate arm sleeves, I have a gilet, and then some long sleeves base layers when it's coldest. I progress from wearing shorts to capris to tights to winter tights when it's near freezing. I also have a cap for rainy days and a buff for very cold days. And running gloves with the wee bits on your fingers that let you use your phone.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/09/2018 19:59

I have never run in the cold either. I bought a really comfy long sleeve light weight top from primark a few weeks ago, which I’ve needed a few times now but usually take it off.,

Excited to try my Bluetooth headphone headband, no wires, which I got as an absolute bargain in the spring sale at Asda but it’s a thick fleecy thing so I haven’t worn it yet! I also have some reflectors and a high vis top but as yet I haven’t been out in the dark. I suspect mornings before too long will need something reflective .

LastOneDancing · 30/09/2018 22:54

For winter running last year, under 8oC I wore a baselayer with a t-shirt over, tights, gloves and a buff.
On really cold days (2oC and below) it was a baselayer under long sleeves, tights, gloves and two buffs - ears and neck.

Aldi did some fantastic winter running tights last year. I'm keeping an eye out to see if they have them again.

Free registration for RED January opens tomorrow if anyone's interested? I'll definitely be signing up, regular running did wonders for my stamina last year.

BusterTheBulldog · 01/10/2018 10:06

Thanks for the RED tip off lastone, will register now!

Parkrun on sat and steady 10 yest from me, I hate when the countdown starts back to 0 again for the month!

525 last of sept miles?

BusterTheBulldog · 01/10/2018 10:07

FFS.

I did 4.1 yesterday evening. Bloody hate evening running! 6 days until my half and I'm getting excited! Unsure of what to eat the days before though or in fact if I need to eat any different to normal?

629.1

RocketPockets · 01/10/2018 15:29

Another quick question. As I have my half on Sunday, what should I be running this week? I was going to do a race pace 45 mins and then a race pace 30 mins and that was gonna be it but now I'm thinking I should be doing more?

BusterTheBulldog · 01/10/2018 15:30

Easy 4 and strides from me today.

I don’t normally eat anything different in the week before, but make sure I eat sensibly and have a pasta based meal the evening before a half. I read once that people can overload with a half when there really is no need and that really stuck in my head as I’ll use any excuse to gorge on carbs!

I have a half in 2 weeks rocket, also getting excited!

RocketPockets · 01/10/2018 16:00

Thank you Buster! That's exactly it, I don't want to go mad and then feel sluggish on the day and I also know I can run 10 on a normal day.

emummy · 01/10/2018 16:39

I agree, just eat your normal diet and don't have a wild drinking session the night before! Your planned runs sound fine though I would probably make the second one easy paced. You don't need to do any more, you will have nice fresh legs.

Daisydoesnt · 01/10/2018 19:12

Thanks for the diet advice a bit earlier up the thread (I can’t remember who suggested stirring peanut butter into overnight oats but I love you!!) An easy 4 Miles for me this morning. I hope this amazing weather lasts all autumn it’s just divine for running

Huntlybyelection · 01/10/2018 21:08

2.5 miles this evening - first time I've had to wear both full leggings and long sleeve top. I love running in the cold weather, not so keen on running when there is ice but I love going out in the snow and rain. Keeps my mind off stressful things!

Huntlybyelection · 01/10/2018 21:22

I've run 363 miles this year!

RocketPockets · 02/10/2018 08:20

I ran 4.1 this morning, wet & windy so not the most enjoyable run and I think I may have the start of a blister on my second toe! Not the best timing as I have my half on Sunday so any tips to relieve it quickly?!
Unsure if it actually is a blister or not, I'm going to get a new pair of the socks I normally wear off amazon prime so hopefully they'll arrive tomorrow so I can wear them for my last run on Thursday! *

Well done Huntly!
Compeed blister plasters are good Rocket. If it's just a rubbed area and not yet a blister you could put Vaseline on it or tape over it on your next run with zinc oxide tape. Hope the socks are good!
Intervals for me up & down hills today. Went better than expected as I had a bit of kidney stone pain last night. I think maybe running helps shoogle it along!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/10/2018 11:51

I did a quick 6km this morning, it was my first morning where I left in the dark although the sun was up by the time I got home. Time to crack out the reflective strips I think! I have some ankle/wrist band things, and a flashing ankle bracelet (Dh says it looks like an ASBO tag).

IRun4Me · 02/10/2018 17:14

A hard pitiful 2.5 today. No energy and trying to fit in amongst a busy day. But at least I got out there.
It is getting chillier and darker - definitely time to dig out the gloves and running lights.
I’ve also signed up for RED January.
Good luck RocketPockets in your half. I hope you enjoy it.

IrvinaYalom · 03/10/2018 22:24

Ridiculously beautiful day here today- went out intending to do a rough 10k but ended up doing more than double that as it was so bloody nice. I feel a proper sense of impending doom at this time of year (I genuinely struggle with winter) so will take full advantage of any truly good weather while it's still possible.

I am another one who has never run in non-summer so am interested in all this clothing chit chat. I am a quite freakishly cold human and layer up in every day life to the point that I have been compared to a furry onion on multiple occasions. I'm really hoping not to have to take quite such drastic clothing measures when going out for winter runs but knowing myself I wouldn't be surprised if I end up in three pairs of leggings under a mink lined tracksuit or some such.

7 miles on Monday, rest yesterday and 13 today brings the weekly total to:

41.5

OhNoGroken · 03/10/2018 22:50

I’ve never run in the dark but it’s looking inevitable soon due to childcare constraints. I love very rurally and the best places to run arent streetlit! Does one carry a torch? Any clever contraption to help you see/be seen?

Also... I tend not to feel the cold too much - will I get through winter without buying too much extra gear? Anyone just wear the usual leggings and T-shirt with maybe a headband to keep ears warm? Is that completely ridiculous because I’ve forgotten how miserable winter really is?

OhNoGroken · 03/10/2018 22:52

Oops I forgot:

45.4 - short midweek run for me today
