Skimum talk to me about strength training please Smile
I know I need to make the switch from 5 short runs and 1 long one, to maybe 3 longer ones a week, and incorporate some cross training on the other days. My plan is to do this from January as Ds will have nursery hours finally, so I’ll have 3 weekdays free. I currently do a circuits class when I can, but honestly I don’t feel that it’s particularly beneficial as it seems to be designed to cause muscle ache (so it feels like it works, but I can’t see how 45 seconds can really develop any particular muscle?? ). What do you do? Can you recommend anything? I thought maybe if I can do 2x 10k and 1x long long (eg 20k) a week, plus maybe 2 strength sessions and a swim that might be the best thing for my joints/muscles while training for my half?

Sorry just seen your post bear For strength training I do twice a week 20 mins which is made up of 4 lots of 20 squats, 20 lunges, 1min plank w arms, plus arm curls and arm raises using 3k weights. It’s the routine from Joe Wickes book Smile. I downloaded a free interval trainer app and set it up with 40secs active and 20secs rest. I also do 20single leg squats & glute raises 4-5x a week when I remember. I also swim twice a week normally the day after a run. Hope that helps. There’s lots of body weight exercise stuff on you tube. I bought my hand weights from Argos the 3kg suits me.

SkiMum99 · 30/10/2018 21:37

I trained for a half on one long run which I upped by 1km each week upto 11miles. I also did one 5k run tried to do it faster, and a mid week 7-9k run. I’m trying to do something similar now but add in a couple of hills in one of the shorter runs.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 31/10/2018 07:17

Thanks ski, I have that joe Wicks book. I was thinking whether swimming might help, maybe one or two weights type sessions. I am already ok with the HM distance, assuming no setbacks occur, and will be working on speed really. I will just have to see what i can fit in and what works.

Currently I am in terrible pain with a pinched nerve in my shoulder, it was agony yesterday and still bad today, so I won’t be running today. Very annoying how i can run miles with no injury, then do something in my sleep that absolutely stops me in my tracks!!
