Anyone fancy a "Run 3 miles every day in June" challenge?

MrsDesperado · 01/06/2017 22:12

I know it's a bit late in the day - sorry.

Thought a challenge like this might do me some good for a few specific reasons:

Firstly, my running is hit and miss - I'll go twice one week and feel great, then won't go again for a couple of weeks, and then the next tine I go out I find it such a slog again. I'm hoping consistency will improve my fitness - it can only get easier, surely?

Secondly, I'd like to lose that pesky half of a stone that I've been trying to lose since January, and this might go some way towards me achieving that.

Finally, it would help to keep the black dog at bay and curb my compulsion to dive into a wine bottle when my stress levels reach a certain critical point.

Would anyone like to join me? Smile

I don't run every day, but I'll try to join you in keeping up a higher level of activity.

I'm aiming to run 3-4 days a week (2 long, 2 short), do my other sport once or twice a week, and have one rest day. On days which aren't a rest day, but I'm not doing either activity, I would aim to walk aplenty.

Yesterday I did a recovery run, and tomorrow I plan to Parkrun. Today isn't an 'official' rest day, so I want to walk a lot. I've clocked up just under 5k steps so far, and shall be going out again soon.

Good luck with your challenge!

PossomInAPearTree · 02/06/2017 11:39

I could be up for this starting from tomorrow.

MrsDesperado · 02/06/2017 18:49

Great - people to join me!

It's very warm and humid here and I'm not in the mood for a run! But I'm not going to bail out (especially on measly day 2!) so I'm going to stop procrastinating and get it over with. Will report back later!

Anyone what fancy joining in the fun?

omg. U R nuts. I have my own goal of 15 miles a week. I'm Not gonna do it this week. But each week is a fresh start, right?!

BWatchWatcher · 02/06/2017 19:42

I think running every day is not meant to be good for you. Running 3-4 times is meant to be ideal.

MrsDesperado · 02/06/2017 21:54

Day 2 - done!

If I'm honest, it was tough today! I was very slow, and I even had to walk at the top of a couple of hills for maybe 30 seconds. Probably a due to a combination of the heat and a rather large lunch. But I'm so pleased I went out and did it, it's only 30- odd minutes out of the day and time to myself to think.

Haven't used my garmin in ages but I'm going to charge it up ready for tomorrow so I can keep a track of my progress this month.

Due to various reasons im probably looking at getting out around 6/7pm again tomorrow

Someone I know has run 10 miles almost every day (like 1 day off a year on average) for last 42 yrs. He looks pretty good for it.

Well done, MsD. :)

BrexitSucks · 02/06/2017 22:08

neah... I'm gonna modify that. one day off every 3 months on average over the 42 yrs. But only because he broke his leg a while back, so it was in plaster for 3-4 months.

IsThatYouPaul · 02/06/2017 22:23

Possibly joining you. A bit. Maybe.

More likely 4 times a week will be my aim. I do parkrun, so there's 1. But I often cannot be faffed to do more than 1 other in week.

So if I put this here, I may just get a nudge to get out more.

Maybe

BWatchWatcher · 02/06/2017 22:27

How about a 'every second day and parkrun' challenge?
That's what I am trying to do, though drinking fruity cider will not help thay.

MrsDesperado · 02/06/2017 22:27

Nudge nudge Paul! So if you've got your parkrun, which days are you going to fit in the other three runs?

Thanks Brexit. 10 miles a day is nuts! How do you split your 15 miles per week?

Jaimx86 · 02/06/2017 22:35

Me! I've ran 151 miles since the end of March and want to make it to 300 miles by mid July when I go on holiday. I'll be doing 22 miles a week, with 3-6miles depending on the day with Friday off as I go swimming then.

MrsDesperado · 02/06/2017 22:43

Wow Jaimx86 that's incredible - I'm very pleased to have you on board! Would you like to be our resident expert?! Smile

What made you choose 300 miles? And how have you found it so far? Do you run every day except Fridays? How do you keep motivated?

OP posts:
Jaimx86 · 02/06/2017 22:53

I found logging my runs really helped. As you can see in the pic from when I started, some runs are better than others but I always try to make myself start with the promise of just doing 10minutes and stopping if I still don't want to do it. That's only happened a few times, or if I've got a busy day (my face goes beetroot after 30mins and takes about 2 hours to look normal again, Blush although my skin is now glowing!).

I've always exercised a lot, but didn't think I 'could' run. Like the op, I wanted the mental headspace and I'd also stopped drinking. I've been so much more productive at work, and I'm sleeping like a baby. Plus, I've lost a stone and a half (a lot of wine calories gone) without really changing eating habits.

In short, I recommend you log your runs and keep a list of the benefits. I've gone from a 'can't run' to a bit obsessed. Grin

Whoops - pic

Anyone fancy a "Run 3 miles every day in June" challenge?
megletthesecond · 02/06/2017 22:54

My friend was sponsored to do this at the start of the year. He said it was tougher than he expected as the month went on, but his running massively improved and he smashed his parkrun PB when the month was over.

MrsDesperado · 03/06/2017 07:57

As losing a bit of weight and improving my running are two big reasons for me doing this, both your posts Jaimx86 and Meglet are massively inspiring and encouraging - thank you for sharing this!

I've yet to do a parkrun - mainly because I know a few people who do them every week in under 17 minutes and I feel inadequate! Sounds like after this month I should be a bit faster and have more confidence in tackling one.

I love all the positives you have listed Jaimx86... my wine drinking has a tendancy to get out of hand, destroying my sleep and leaving me unproductive at work and killing my plans to go running. I'm not ready to give up alcohol just yet (though I often think I should) but I certainly think prioritising my running will make me think twice about drinking. I didn't drink last night, which is unusual for me on a Friday.

What's that program you use to track your runs Jaimx86? It looks good.

Glad I've found this thread! I was planning to do something similar in June, but then I fell over while running on 31 May and although I'm not injured enough to stop me running (grazed hands and knees) it did put me off....

This thread has inspired me to get back on the saddle so I'm going to do a 3 mile run this morning. Going to use the treadmill at the gym though, as I'm still a bit wary of falling Blush

Interested to hear that your friend improved his parkrun PB by doing the same! It's ages since I got a PB at parkrun.....

BrexitSucks · 03/06/2017 08:05

MsD: I try to run 4 x a week, usually about 4 miles, so it should come in close to 15 miles running every 7 days. I have a 700 miles goal for the yr (currently not on target, boohoo).

I know it sounds like a whinge... but I also cycle (commuting) up to 40 miles/wk, and swim 2 hours/wk, long walks with the kids, a few lunch time strolls. I could do 3 mile run/day if I didn't have all the other stuff (but I want all the other stuff, too). DS has just collared me for a long walk tomorrow.

MrsDesperado · 03/06/2017 08:11

Welcome Delaney! Falling over must be scary, not yet happened to me but I know a few people who've suffered horrible cuts and grazes. Let us know how the treadmill goes, I find it everso hard going - very boring and obsessive clock watching - but sometimes it's the only way I can fit a run in.
Hope you get your confidence to go running outside back soon Flowers

AuntieStella · 03/06/2017 08:12

My Parkrun has a group who always seem to finish around the 17m mark, occasionally under that.

But there are a few hundred of us there, and we're not all like that! I go round in about 28 minutes these days and don't feel remotely inadequate!

I'll be leaving to head off for it very shortly.

MrsDesperado · 03/06/2017 08:13

It's sounds like you're doing loads plenty of other stuff Brexit - you're forgiven for not doing 3 miles every day!

Love the idea of keeping a tally on running mileage. Am going to start this!

OP posts:
MrsDesperado · 03/06/2017 08:14

Thanks Stella! That good to know. It's my own issue - I need to get over it.

fetcheveryone.com is a nice community for runners, btw. Swimmers & cyclists on there, too. They link into Strava & that type of thing, can set goals or see monthly totals, etc.

Jaimx86 · 03/06/2017 11:06

Did 5 miles this morning at not sure how far I'll fit in tomorrow. I find running in the morning on an empty tum so much easier than hauling myself after work.

Desperado, the app is LogMyRun. It's free and very basic, but when I've used more complex trackers I haven't been bothered to log them. This one takes 20seconds and just tells me miles for the week/month/year.

Brexit, I think long walks can be just as beneficial. Especially from the mental clarity aspect. Are you going anywhere nice?
