Anyone fancy a "Run 3 miles every day in June" challenge?

I know it's a bit late in the day - sorry.

Thought a challenge like this might do me some good for a few specific reasons:

Firstly, my running is hit and miss - I'll go twice one week and feel great, then won't go again for a couple of weeks, and then the next tine I go out I find it such a slog again. I'm hoping consistency will improve my fitness - it can only get easier, surely?

Secondly, I'd like to lose that pesky half of a stone that I've been trying to lose since January, and this might go some way towards me achieving that.

Finally, it would help to keep the black dog at bay and curb my compulsion to dive into a wine bottle when my stress levels reach a certain critical point.

Would anyone like to join me? Smile

I only started running in Feb. Was doing 5k once a week in Feb and march. Then April and May twice a week with a shorter 3k run as well some weeks.

You're only supposed to increase your distance by 10% a week or something aren't you? Guess I more than doubled it!

lljkk · 11/06/2017 11:18

It might be too much too fast, sorry :(.

PossumInAPearTree · 11/06/2017 15:12

I feel a lot better today.

Did some physio exercises yesterday and this morning. Went to a core stability class today. Got Pilates tomorrow.

I might go to running class tomorrow but the PT knows what I've done. It's all on treadmills so if I start hurting I will stop.

Possum you had done good advice from all sides.... assuming the chiro you see knows about sports injuries and your history with your back, then that is probably a good approach but I guess you should back off s but.... maybe aim to walk 3 miles a day and throw in the odd run?

Have run/walked 5 miles today ... followed by precautionary icing of my ankle.... if I can continue with the progress I'm making I hope to be back to running enough for my 10k in 3 weeks and then my focus will be increasing distance for a long run each week for GNR.

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 11/06/2017 18:01

Possum - just a thought re the new trainers.... did the neutral shoes cause any issues (other than blisters)?

If not I would be tempted to ignore the gait analysts and stick to a neutral shoe....

PossumInAPearTree · 11/06/2017 19:39

No problems apart from blisters with the neutral shoes. But running shop guy reckoned I was getting the blisters because I was overpronating........I could feel my feet rubbing the edge/side of the shoe which I don't with the new ones. Maybe I need a different neutral shoe?

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 12/06/2017 09:44

I've never heard of that being a reason for blisters.... usually it's because a shoe is too loose or too tight.... if you over pronate usually the shoe moves with you...

Was it a specialist running shop or a chain?
I've tried gait analysis in different places over the years... different results from 2 different running chains with 3 weeks!

Last time I went to a running shop and the advice I got confirmed what I already thought from my own experience.... I run in neutral / minimal shoes with good but not excessive cushioning....

I had even been suggested to get stability shoes by some sources recently as part of recovery from a series of injuries but I chose not to as the neutral shoes feel right and other advice I've had is that unless you have real issues, different types of shoes aren't really necessary for mild - mid over pronation.

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 12/06/2017 09:46

It is possible the change of shoe affected your gait and affected your back....

I would talk it through with the chiro and see what they suggest... mine is great at explaining how these things interact and working out what is best for me...

PossumInAPearTree · 12/06/2017 15:01

Specialist independent running shop with a good reputation.

Going to go for a 5k run this evening. Am tempted to wear my old shoes!

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 12/06/2017 20:48

Hope it goes ok Possum

I went out lunchtime today for a change.... around 4 miles of run/walk ... my overall fitness is definitely building but the ankle still gets warm/sore so I'm keeping up with icing and massage. And have booked back in with chiro for a review later this week...

PossumInAPearTree · 12/06/2017 21:37

Felt ok at the time but sore now this evening. Won't be running tomorrow.

MrsDesperado · 12/06/2017 22:49

Hello everyone! Been a busy few days, just catching up.

Possum hope you feel better in the morning after some rest tonight.

Well I developed a hideous cold Saturday night which meant I didn't go running on Sunday. Am gutted! Feel like I've let myself and everyone down. Have been bargaining with myself, telling myself that as I also ran 3 miles on 31st May I can substitute that for yesterday Hmm but I know that that is cheating...

Anyway, I felt slightly better this morning, and a bit better tonight, so thrashed out 5K on the treadmill at 8:30pm. It felt good, and easy! I've definitely improved as we're not even halfway through the month. So that's my day 12 done ignoring day 11 hiatus

Onwards and upwards!

I think one day through illness is acceptable. Maybe do a few 6ks to make up the missing 5k and then your distance in the month will be the same?

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 13/06/2017 17:55

Hope you're ok today Possum ...

Desperado I think if you average 6/7 across the month that's still bloody amazing....

I'm still keeping going with run/walks. Just over 4 miles this morning then home to apply ice....

Ankle niggles a bit towards the end of the session and stiffens up after but it's bearable and pain eases once I stop so I'm keeping on for now.... that's 15 consecutive days so far for me. Motivation is definitely getting harder though - good job it wasn't raining today!

MrsDesperado · 13/06/2017 20:51

Well done on day 15 hamster. Hope you continue to keep the ankle pain at bay. So good you went out, I agree - motivation is definitely getting harder...

How are you doing today Possum? Good idea about upping the distance to make up for Sunday. Taking you advice, I am smug proud to say I ran a whopping 10k today for day 13. Does that make up for Sunday? Grin

PossumInAPearTree · 13/06/2017 22:35

Big well done on the 10k!

Didn't run today. Felt ok but didn't want to push it after last night. Went to Pilates and the instructor there says I have piriformis syndrome. Have googled and I would say it fits.

She says to see a chiropractor so am going to ring one tomorrow.

DelaneyHasAUseForMe · 13/06/2017 23:03

Well done all for keeping at it! Glad you're going to see a chiropractor Possum I think it's a good idea to get it checked out.

A gentle 3 miles for me this evening, with a few sprints thrown in as a mild effort at speed training ... planning to go to the gym in the morning too and rack up a few more miles on the treadmill there.

Only 5 weeks to go here before bikini time Shock that should be enough to keep the motivation up!

DelaneyHasAUseForMe · 14/06/2017 22:08

Did 8km at the gym this morning - feeling good!

Hope you all did well, it's very hot today Smile

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 16/06/2017 13:48

Haven't posted for a couple of days - combination of being busy, tired and toothache

But I have still run every day so that's 16 days in June so far plus 2 at the end of May...

Chiro this morning says some stiffness in my ankle but good to carry on Smile

Total miles so far this month is 68.9 of run/walk ....

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 16/06/2017 13:50

Hope you've managed to get sorted with a Chiro, Possum...

Hope everyone else is still managing to get out... motivation is definitely flagging today but hopefully dentist will sort me out and I'll sleep better and be more inclined to get up and go out...

DelaneyHasAUseForMe · 16/06/2017 23:37

Well done Hamster.

I did another 8km this morning - going out early is preferable for me in the heat! Not sure I'll make it out tomorrow though as we are out early and back late, taking DS1 to a tournament which is nearly 3 hours away....I'll see how I feel about getting up at 6am in the morning Confused

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 22/06/2017 10:57

Lost this thread as I forgot to post...

Have now completed 24 continuous days of running or run walking for at least 3 miles.... motivation is lie done dats but I've stuck with it so far ... some early starts needed to avoid the heat though...

Am I the only one still going?
