Hi

Has anyone recently started or just about to start? Would be great to have somewhere to check in and cheer each other on.

I've started very slowly and am about to embark on week 3. I'm spending 2 weeks on each week if that makes sense!

Look forward to anyone else joining in.

Arch Sad Flowers

It made all the difference to my knees as well, Mickey. If you can get to a branch of www.runnersneed.com, they were really good for me, filmed me running on a treadmill then explained what sort of shoes I needed & gave me three different pairs to try.

There was no pressure to buy on the spot AT ALL, but having them has helped massively.

Biking007 · 23/12/2016 12:35

I run with a ankle support on at the moment, my DH got it in boots, was £25 but it's excellent and has enabled me to keep running and I've not noticed any issues when I take it off. I did find swimming helped it when it was weak, kicking with a board on front or back to strength it. Gd luck. Yes get good fitting trainers makes a difference.

Had hoped to run today but it's getting very windy ere! May have to wait till tom if it's not calmer later.

iamamickey · 23/12/2016 13:21

Peeps I want to give you all a big virtual hug (and that's not because I have been on the cooking sherry!!)

You are all so supportive and ready with great advice.

I'm going to try to get into the running shop in Belfast after Christmas. Then I can get some proper guddies. Hopefully in the sale

Thanks again guys. Ye are great xxx

This and the B210K thread are my favourite bits of MN. I don't think I'd ever have stuck with the programme without the support & advice on here.

(Can I just announce at this point that I RAN 10K YESTERDAY!!!!!!)

iamamickey · 23/12/2016 13:44

Big cheers and congratulations to you Empress!!!

Lots of admiration for you on completing thaStarStarStar

Biking007 · 23/12/2016 14:12

That's A MAZ ING empress well done Grin an inspiration! Star

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 23/12/2016 14:40

Thank you GrinGrinGrin

I'm signed up for a 10K in May and I really wanted to know I could do the whole thing before Christmas.

I was in the gym & flipped a bit at the end. There was a bit of cheering & crying but fortunately the trainer I had my induction with was around & understood what was going on.

I headed straight to Costa for cake.

Biking007 · 23/12/2016 16:47

That's brill good to have goal, and an excuse to eat cake Wink

I'd hoped I'd get there (10K) by the end of March but I hadn't factored in a month out due to illness - now I'd just be happy keeping 5-6k going 3x a week and see how my body holds up Smile. No run for me today the weather is just too dire so plan to go out tom early if I get up in time and not too many folks about.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 23/12/2016 17:31

That was my original plan too, Biking, I never expected things to get this far! But then a close friend died of cancer & I reacted & the next thing I knew I had a Just Giving page & a place in a run...

Whether I'll carry it on after May I have no idea. I'll drop down to doing a 5K a couple of times a week, I think.

ScarlettDarling · 23/12/2016 17:53

Wow Empress I'm so impressed. I still haven't done 5k despite running for 30 mins. My furthest so far is 4.72 km and once the 30 min timer goes off I can't run a step further! I haven't been out since Sunday, made every excuse going despite dh and dc trying to encourage me to go out and do it. Think I'm losing motivation to carry on...thought I'd be finding it easier by this point but every step still kills me!

Archduke · 23/12/2016 19:41

OMG Empress that is STONKINGLY AMAZING! Well done indeed. I'm extremely sorry to hear you lost your dear friend. I really don't mean to sound trite, however having had a similar loss I find I am more determined than ever to make the years count in a healthy way that my lovely friend couldn't iyswim.

Scarlett 4.72 is a fantastic achievement - could you change the timer from 30 mins to 35 or 40 to see if you can run that bit longer? The hardest thing is to get out there, once you do it - or at least once it's over then you will feel fabulous.

Biking007 · 24/12/2016 08:16

Sorry to hear about your friend empress

I did it! 35mins run non-stop 5k!!! At sunrise this morning Grin was bit windy still on seafront so I was bit slower than normal but had energy left in legs at end I could of carried on I reckon, but I SO don't want another injury. Great start to my Xmas eveXmas Smile

Happy Xmas to all runnersFlowers

iamamickey · 24/12/2016 08:58

Well done everyone. Your achievements are all bloody great!!!!

Empress your buddy would be so massively proud of you using your grief for positive things.

I feel like a fraud. I'm literally running for less than 5 minutes. I'm going to go out this afternoon when it gets dark. My big son is going to come with me so he will push me to the limit. (He thinks old ladies and that's a quote! Shouldn't run alone at night)

Biking007 · 24/12/2016 09:01

You can do it Micky it's taken me 12-14wks to do that 5k going out 3x a week (I had month off at wk7 due to illness) so it's been slow build up just keep trying and you will get there. Every 5mins outside even walking is 5mins less on the couch Smile

ScarlettDarling · 24/12/2016 12:09

Ah well done Biking that's brill!!

I went out this morning and did 4.86 km, my furthest yet, in 31 mins. Im sooooo cross with myself that I didn't push myself and do another couple of minutes to complete the 5k but I was totally spent!

Biking007 · 24/12/2016 14:26

Well done scarlett that's fab! You should be pleased with yourself Xmas Smile Do you use strava? I started using it after the NHS C25k app kept crashing and I wanted something to tell me my pace and distance. It's cuts in over my music every 0.5k which I find really motivating to keep going.

ScarlettDarling · 24/12/2016 20:07

Hi Biking I've been using 'map my run' which is good but cuts in at random times to say how far I've run...today it first cut in at 0.2 km and then again at something like 1.3 km. I'll have a look at strava.

I've been listening to 'one bad mother' podcasts ever since I've finished the couch to 5k ones. They never crashed for me but God, the music was awful on them! The podcasts I'm listening to now are funny ones about parenting, I quite enjoy them.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 25/12/2016 07:17

Thanks everybody, Happy Christmas!
Biking, congrats, what a Christmas present!
Scarlett, you're so close! You'll get there.
Arch, yes about making the years count.
Mickey, you're not a fraud, look back through the thread, you're where we all started!

Biking007 · 26/12/2016 08:38

Boxing Day legs of lead but did an early sunrise 35mins/5k Smile and turned out to be faster than Xmas eve but boy it felt hardwork. I really struggle at the 12-17min mark I just want to stop but have to keep telling myself to keep going then suddenly it's like adrenaline kicks in again and it's marginally easier. Hope everyone had gd Xmas day.
Anyone get running gifts? DH offered to get me new trainers but I'm happy with the ones I have for now so may wait but boy I need a new sports bra so may get that instead as they flipping expensive in my big size Grin

Did you get to go out Xmas eve micky? Did your son help with encouragement? Trust in the program it does work, I was sitting on the couch in Sept secretly downloading the C25k app one Sunday evening then did my first walk /run on my day off, did first week without telling DH or kids as didn't want to look stupid if I failed but they gave me lots of encouragement so I carried on and now I'm gob smacked I can do 5kSmile

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 26/12/2016 08:45

Biking, you're amazing. I'm in Yorkshire & my trainers are at home in London, so no running until I'm home. Keeping up with the exercises though.

I had Sports Direct vouchers Grin

Biking007 · 26/12/2016 09:02

Thanks empress I'm sure your body is enjoying the rest from running, and your be sprinting on your returnGrin I was just checking out sports direct website for new running top Smile

waitingforsomething · 26/12/2016 11:08

Just completed week 4 run 3, really pleased with myself as I found run 2 really hard this week and my left knee has started to hurt. Better today though and I made it! A bit scared of starting week 5 in a couple of days!

Biking007 · 26/12/2016 15:14

That's brill waiting well done. Hope the knee is ok.
I Ice with frozen peas the top of my leg after a run and stretches really help my sore hip flexor, my DH ices his knee Grin it keeps us going.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 26/12/2016 15:43

Well done Waiting.

I sorted my knee by getting my gait analysed to get me the right trainers and by getting a regular workout planned for me at the gym.

Biking007 · 28/12/2016 16:38

No running last 2days decided to go for a swim instead to loosen up Smile but I'm hoping to get an early run in tom before work as DH has DDs for next two days and he will need a run in the eve to help him survive Grin
