Hi

Has anyone recently started or just about to start? Would be great to have somewhere to check in and cheer each other on.

I've started very slowly and am about to embark on week 3. I'm spending 2 weeks on each week if that makes sense!

Look forward to anyone else joining in.

Biking I am inspired. I bet you are gonna really enjoy your weekend off. X

Biking007 · 17/12/2016 19:10

Arrh thanks but I've eaten far too much chocolate today!!Blush
Go for it waiting I couldn't run 2mins a few weeks ago and had 3wks no running due to illness at wk7, but I love the buzzSmile

Hope you all have great runs over the wend.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 17/12/2016 19:27

I'm away for 5 days over Christmas & wondering whether I'll be determined enough to get any training in.

iamamickey · 17/12/2016 20:17

Ok I did day one of the Couch to five K. I used my fathers treadmill.

How can I not run for one minute easily??

I totally didn't realise what a fat unfit being I have become.

Anyway, my question is.. how do I stop belly wobble? I ran in grey sweatpants a t shirt and a really good sports bra. The chesticles were grand and my new Balance trainers were great but my belly was all over the place

How humiliating.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 17/12/2016 20:55

Mickey FlowersWine

CONGRATULATIONS. I mean it.

I thought I was fairly fit when I started, I went for regular long walks and did Zumba, but the first run is HARD.

Somebody explained that it's because your body is having to get used to a completely new way of moving.

Archduke · 17/12/2016 22:37

I RAN 20 MINUTES NON STOP

20 MINUTES Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

I totally didn't think I could do it - even at the 10 min mark I thought about stopping and walking for a bit, but I carried on and DID IT! I totally air punched at the end. I was so stoked.

Biking well done on your 30 min run! That's really awesome.

Mickey I was exactly the same as you 5 weeks ago. Could barely run 1 min. Stick with it, honestly it's amazing. I find a good pair of tight running leggings like these helps hold in the mid way jiggly bits.

Keep at it, it will get easier. Well, maybe not easier but heaps more fun.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 17/12/2016 22:40

ARCH!!!!!!

Well done!!!!!!!!!!!!

Biking007 · 18/12/2016 10:08

That's brill Arch!!!! Well done Grin it's amazing what you can do and how much is the mind over body.
My body is groaning abit this morning from Fridays run but oldest DD wants to go roller skating this morning so that might sort out my hips once and for all!!Smile
Well done mickey the first step is the hardest. I thought I was fitter than I was as I'd been swimming but oh no I couldn't do more than couple minutes jog with out being a tomato red faced, jiggling, puffing thing ( I'm still this but in my head I'm gliding along Grin ). Keep going IT does get easier.

I SO want to hit 5k by end of Dec!! I'm hoping my eldest will either cycle alongside me tom or run with me so I can get some exercise in whilst youngest DD is at music group tom.

Biking007 · 19/12/2016 14:50

Managed another 30min /4.5k run this morn but was a couple of stop/starts as my oldest DD was on her roller skates with me Smile but it felt good to get out again.

Archduke · 19/12/2016 23:33

Biking that's fantastic. How much longer would you have to run to do 5k? Another 5 mins?? Not far to go!

I've just done W6R1 which was fine - easy actually, apart from the first 5 min run. My left front thigh is hurting though Sad, I try to stretch before and afterwards but not sure I'm doing it right.

Biking007 · 20/12/2016 07:19

In theory Arch just over another 3.5mins id clock up another 0.5k id prob have done it yest if I hadn't had my DD with me, Strava tells me my average split time which is gd motivation. I'm going up try wed eve again but I'm fighting off another cold Sad

Is it top of your leg hurts or groin? Hip flexors I struggle with. Stretches really are the key, YouTube is great for ideas, even my sceptical DH has started stretching after his runs and the next day to reduce soreness.
My hip flexor is really sore on one side so I googled stretches for it and iced it with bag frozen peas after yest run. I've had 2 C-secs and it's left me numb all in the lower tummy and both hip flexors are weak. I've had constant probs with my left one and by running my RHS is over compensating and hurting a lot. But gd news by focusing on keeping my arms in a good position this has really helped reduce my neck pain Smile. I tried sprinting my last 0.5k yesterday and it felt wonderful till I lost puff after a minGrin

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 20/12/2016 07:24

Are you going to join us on the 5 to 10K thread once you've made it, Biking?

Archduke · 20/12/2016 07:29

OOOh hip flexors??? I have no idea what they are but have also had 2 C-secs - will google and look at YouTube. Thanks Biking.

Good news about your neck pain, I have tried to adjust my arm position but it interferes with carrying my phone - do you lot have those phone carrying arm-bands? Or bung it in a pocket?

Biking007 · 20/12/2016 08:09

I've got a cheap "running bum bag" to Carry my phone around my waist in. I tried my DH arm band but didn't like it. Got it in sports direct.
I had NHS Physio for months post 1st C-section trying to sort out my rhs hip flexor it helped abit but I still get pain there. I'm hoping running may help them strengthen?!

Ooh yes empress when I'm feeling confident I will join the other thread too. I'd so love to get upto 10K but it's going to take longer than I first thought navigating through winter bugs and injuriesSmile Did you get faster first? Or just run further? I'd like to get bit quicker first I can't do 5k in 30mins yet

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 20/12/2016 09:42

I'd like to get bit quicker first I can't do 5k in 30mins yet

Me neither! My furthest is 8K, which took about an hour - finished the run for that day & just kept going.

I've just done W12R1, which was 18x3, and when I can run the whole thing I'll look at getting faster.
I've got a bumbag too. It takes my phone, Oyster, keys & debit card. Perfect.

Biking007 · 20/12/2016 20:37

That's great empress running 8k, inspiring me Grin and interesting about carrying on not upping speed. I'm going to try getting to 5k and feeling comfy then see if I can push it abit. I'm more worried about keeping injuries at bay Grin I'm just super pleased at keeping it going since Sept. I'm also trying to do the 30day core challenge at mo. I'm on day 11, upto 50sec plank & 30 crunches & 30 bicycle crunches- I've annoying not lost a lb but I'm hopefully getting fitter Smile then in Jan I can tackle my eating abit more and lose at least a stone!

Biking007 · 20/12/2016 20:38

It's annoying my DH only started running in the summer and is SO fast and now upto 15k!

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 21/12/2016 07:40

Are your clothes getting looser though, Biking? I haven't lost that much weight but I have dropped a dress size.

My knees started kicking off at the point when I was doing an extra k each week so yes, taking it slowly makes sense. And I'd be pissed off with your DH too! Grin

Biking007 · 21/12/2016 11:42

Alas no my clothes aren't looser Blush it's SO much harder to lose weight post 40yrs+ I lost 3stone after my 2nd DD and actually found it easy once in the rhythm took me a year, but I've put back 2stone back on over last 3yrs and SO pissed off with myself because of it! We are going skiing in March so that's my fitness and healthy eating goal to be in the best possible shape Smile I also think it will seriously take some weight off my joints running as I'm easily 3stone overweight at the mo Xmas Blush

Biking007 · 21/12/2016 11:43

I'd like to think a stone of that is boobs and muscles Grin

Biking007 · 21/12/2016 20:37

Dragged myself out tonight after loong 12hrs of looking after kids when DH got home. Was an effort just about managed 30mins non stop but was slow and plodding! I chose a different route but my body didn't like running down hill or up it Smile still I did it, so pleased I made the effort.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 21/12/2016 20:59

Biking, that's the thing isn't it? You really don't feel like it sometimes but still feel so glad you've done it afterwards!

iamamickey · 22/12/2016 22:34

I have completed three runs now and I'm shocked how unfit I am but also my ankles are really weak. I have tweaked both a couple of times when my foot has landed unevenly.

Do ye recommend strapping? My son is doing A level PE and he suggested it but I'm not sure if it will help or prevent my ankles from strengthening up.

Any advice welcome. Xx

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 23/12/2016 10:00

I have completed three runs now and I'm shocked how unfit I am

Oh God yes, I remember that, but you've completed them. Which is brilliant.

I don't know about ankle strapping, but my first thoughts would be having the right supportive trainers (you can get your gait analysed for free at various running shops and they'll advise you on what sort to get) and ankle strengthening exercises. If you search for that on YouTube there are plenty of videos.

Someone else on the thread might know more but it could also be worth starting a separate thread on the Exercise board to ask, then you'd get experienced runners seeing it.

Archduke · 23/12/2016 10:23

Mickey I second the gait analysis thing - I have stuffed my back totally, and the remedial massage therapist said it was because my ankles roll in slightly which causes pressure on my legs, knees, hips and tra-la-laaa, back.

She totally recommended getting my gait analysed and getting proper fitted trainers, not just pretty day-glo pinky orange ones (which I have). It's either that or go to a podiatrist and get orthotics. I would do it as having been laid up for 2 days now in raging fury and agony it's worth it.
