Hi

Has anyone recently started or just about to start? Would be great to have somewhere to check in and cheer each other on.

I've started very slowly and am about to embark on week 3. I'm spending 2 weeks on each week if that makes sense!

Look forward to anyone else joining in.

Yay!!!
Congratulations.
Did W9R1 yesterday
Almost but not quite 5k but hilly.
I'll join you on a bridge to 10k thread next week.
Things are getting better here so I should be back to my active self soon.

YouWereRight · 02/11/2016 18:03

Hello Smile

I did W5R2 earlier today. I imagine I was slower than a tortoise wading through peanut butter, but I did it. How do I tell if I need to redo this week, or run?

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 02/11/2016 18:28

Annette, I could hug you! We'll start it together. I'm glad things are improving. This was my W9R1 really, but I got to the end & saw the 5K beckoning so just carried on.

Hello You! Congrats - it's ALL about the stamina, not the speed right now! Whether you need to redo the week is completely up to you. A lot of us are / were repeating runs quite often around Wk 5, so it's when you're comfortable to carry on.

Xmasfairy86 · 02/11/2016 19:32

I MUST get back to it! Would love to join you on that bridge!!

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 02/11/2016 20:03

You'll do it, xmas!

HepKestrel · 02/11/2016 20:24

Congratulations empress!

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 02/11/2016 20:40

Thanks Hep!

Good luck for tomorrow. Nowt wrong with every third day either!

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 02/11/2016 21:38

Shock Wow!

AnnettePrice · 02/11/2016 22:00

I think the understatement of the thread award goes to hobnob
"Bit of a target"
Wow, good luck. Flowers
It should be possible.
Stay on here and hopefully follow-on threads as we all progress. There will be a lot of MN Pom-pom waving and support.

HepKestrel · 03/11/2016 18:28

Good luck hobnob!
W4r2 completed. A bit low on energy this week, but no aches from my ankle at all.

Think I might need to start having mid afternoon flapjacks before my run...

Next run... Hmmm... If i don't brave running outside at the weekend it won't be till Monday Sad. Fx for reasonable weather

yeah I'm still having a lot of trouble with pain too, which is interfering rather!

One of my ankles is particularly bad, but both are sore, from my shin round to the back - maybe my achilles this time. Have a short massage scheduled next week. Might still try to go out tomorrow to see whether it gets better or worse! I'm using lots of ibuprofen gel and stuff. I don't want to lose the hard won fitness that I've gained, as it's been SO slow, and such an effort to get this far.

Impressed at everyone else's success - specially the half marathon target!!

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 03/11/2016 19:37

Great that your ankle's OK, Kestrel. You've done one outside run, you can do it again!

(although I haven't run in the rain yet)

Poor you Mother, hope the osteopath can help Flowers

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 03/11/2016 22:05

Utter madness I know but every year I watch the local half and moan about how I wish Incould so something like that so time to put my money where my mouth is and try
I mean what's the worst tha could happen ....Confused

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 03/11/2016 22:30

I think it's brilliant, hobnobs.

A lot of people are telling me that 5-10K is easier than C25K because you've already built up your fitness. I'd guess it just carries on like that.

CrotchetQuaverMinim · 04/11/2016 11:46

Really finding the stamina-building hard. Some of it is because of the ankle/shin pain I guess, but some of it is just fitness and I don't seem to be building it up as fast as I'd like. But there isn't any other exercise to add that I like/can fit in/can afford/that doesn't injure me (basically I hate exercise, so this is the most I am every likely to do!).

Despite the ankle pain, I did go out this morning. I'm trying to change my two intervals of 10 min, to 11/9, 12/8 etc. Today was 13/7, but I really struggled with the 13, and then had to stop and walk for a minute of the 7. Frustrating! And the pain is still there, though I am using a lot of ibuprofen gel and paracetamol to help, so it's tolerable. And doesn't hurt that much when I'm actually running, in fact.

Maybe I will redo 13/7 next time and see how it is. I went out before breakfast today because I had the morning off and could lie in anyway (so it wasn't until after 9 anyway!). Sometimes if I go too soon after breakfast, I feel sick, and I've been better when I do it beforehand. But maybe I need to eat a bit more for energy or something, which could be why today was harder. I like having breakfast to look forward to!

They were also setting up the park for fireworks displays, so about 10 council workers were just standing around at each junction of the path, not really seeming to be doing anything but watching people go by, which is a bit uncomfortable! I guess they were making sure people didn't go into the areas that were being prepared or something.

AnnettePrice · 04/11/2016 14:36

Well I thought I would go for a run today, but by the time I procrastinated it started to bucket down and it's not meant to stop until after it goes dark.
Now I'm sure if I was already running and it started raining I would be stubborn and just keep running, but its the going out when it's already started.
Tomorrow is meant to be rain free so going to get run in tomorrow morning.

Crotchet you don't fancy cycling or swimming? both of them won't impact your ankle as much. Though I do get what you mean about fitting it in and the affordability.

Mother Swimming sounds like a good plan, keeping the cardio fitness up after your hard work getting this far. Hopefully it won't be long until you are running again.

Empress the bridge to 10k plan I have is only 6 weeks long. So in theory if we start next week, it could be 10k before Xmas Shock

Kestrel Glad to hear your ankle is better. Flapjacks are always good, I often do a 3 min microwave recipe.

75g butter
2 tbsp golden syup
5 tbsp sugar
175g oats

Put into microwave bowl all except oats in microwave for 1 min (until butter almost melted).
Stir until all melted.
Add Oats to bowl and mix until all combined
put in greased dish (I use pyrex)
press down with back of spoon to compact
microwave for about 2 mins. (The middle should rise a little).
Leave to cool, before cold divide up but don't remove from dish.
Remove when cold (otherwise they can fall to bits but they still taste good).

Sorry... back to the running..... ;-)

CrotchetQuaverMinim · 04/11/2016 16:00

I just find swimming expensive and smelly - my skin and hair just absorb chlorine so much, and then finding a time when you're allowed to use the pool for lengths, etc, it's all just a hassle, even though I live quite close. And I end up with sore back or shoulder (I have wonky joints which is why I get injured a lot!). And cycling never seems to do much for my fitness in the time I'm on it - I would have to cycle much harder or up more hills or something, and it's hard with traffic etc. And hurts my knees! At least with the running, I have very short, very specific goals, can feel it doing something in a short time, know that it will be over soon, can fit it in whenever, etc. I liked it better at the start when there were lots of short walk/run breaks to give some little goals on the way. Exercise is just not something I enjoy much, but this is the furthest I've managed to get on a program, so i'd like to be able to make myself finish it, 30 min in a row.

Maybe flapjacks would be good for my pre-run snack and then still have breakfast when I get back.. hmm, might explain why I don't lose weight though!

HepKestrel · 04/11/2016 16:08

thanks Annette !

actually, i will be kitchenless for 2 weeks, so may give that recipe a go!

eek! just checked the forecast for tomorrow.... 7degrees max ! but sunny.

i'll join you (virtually) in a run outside tomorrow. Though i may go in the afternoon.

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 04/11/2016 18:45

My 10K app is 6 weeks too, Annette!

I'm running tomorrow afternoon as well, decided to have a change & go to one of the local parks.

AnnettePrice · 05/11/2016 13:55

W9R2
Put gps tracking on and after 25mins i could see that 5k in 30 mins would be close, and I stubbornly wanted it so I sped up.
It was amazing that I had that extra, no idea where I got it from.

5k in 30mins

Done
(Just)

Thank you everyone for your support. Having this thread really motivated me when my mojo was severely lacking. Flowers
This summer when I started c25k W1R1 was so hard, I stumbled more than ran, gasping for breath with a beetroot face.

I haven't lost much weight yet but my fitness level is so much better and even DM commented that she thought I looked healthier.

Looking forward to seeing you on the bridge next week Empress though I will hang around here as well to support and Pom-Pom wave.
Maybe some more of you will be joining us on the bridge soon? Xmas?

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 05/11/2016 14:05

30 mins? APPLAUSE. Lots of it. You've done brilliantly, Annette. I remember how tough W1R1 was too.

I'm going to head out shortly & do W9R3, then we'll get on the bridge together for W10!

Yes to sticking around here too, I love this thread.

DropZoneOne · 05/11/2016 17:05

Wow, lots of you doing brilliantly!

I haven't run for a month, and even walking took a back seat for a couple of weeks. But I went out and jumped in where I left off - W5R1. And it was soo hard. My legs were fine but my lungs hurt. I was going so slowly I was practically jogging on the spot. The middle 5 minutes was a bit easier but last 5 minutes hurt again.

Is this just lack of fitness? The colder weather?

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 05/11/2016 17:27

Maybe it's partly the break?

I read a really interesting post on another thread about how because it's a completely different way of moving, it's totally normal for running to be slower and harder at first. Perhaps it's about getting back into the exercise.

I found that when I had a break it was easier to drop back & redo a week, maybe that would help too?

W9R3 done. The park was a nice change.
