Gather here parkrunners old and new. Tell us all about your running, volunteering, juniors, tourism, Cake and cows.

Old thread here for anyone interested.

We are probably the best thread on MN. All are welcome here whether you are brand new to parkrun or sporting your 500 shirt.

Here's my shirt. I think I'll do a cake to match, with some biscuits iced with the parkrun symbol.

Well I struggled for ideas for a 150 cake. But was always going to do the comedy "stick a 1 in front of the 50" T shirt, and decided to do that with kinesic tape, for the lolz. So then I thought, hey I could do a cake to match! I have ordered some red ready to roll icing from Amazon, and I have lots of coloured writing icing tubes.

chutneypig · 09/12/2016 06:39

The top looks great Melanie and I'm sure the cake will too. Enjoy Southampton!

I hit 25 volunteer stints last weekend but roughly two thirds of that is for the junior events. The kids like to get involved with volunteering at the main events too, and very occasionally at juniors.

0ellenbrody0 · 09/12/2016 20:45

I'm barcode scanning tomorrow so no running for me.

Re:volunteering. I try and do 5 runs then a volunteer. That feels about right to me. It does always seem to be the same faces every week, luckily we seem to have a good few teens doing the volunteer section if D of E.

melanie please post pictures of your cake!

miked99 · 10/12/2016 05:09

Hello everyone
It was a beautiful morning today and my sons friend who did his first run last week, enjoyed it so much that he brought along his dad this week so we have two new parkrunners !
There was also an announcement that there will be an extra Parkrun on Christmas Day morning which all the kids leapt at the idea of , I don't think many of the adults were so enamoured with the idea.

GypsyFl0ss · 10/12/2016 11:27

Slightly damp and muddy but faster run for me today. What a buzz I get from it...I never, ever thought I'd be a runner!
Signed up to volunteer on NYE so I can run on NY day. I reckon if I volunteer every 6 weeks that it works out ok.

chutneypig · 10/12/2016 15:20

How did the scanning go 0ellen? I enjoy it if it's not a ropey scanner.

It's always nice to see more people at parkrun miked isn't it?

I like the idea of a Christmas Day parkrun but only if we could walk to it, which we can't. Think we'll stick to the New Year's Day double.

Great on the faster run Gypsy, a buzz is great!

I had a rubbish run today, no energy at all but was on my own so could slow down without complaint. DH had the kids and DD bagged another age category record so is very chuffed. She's going great guns at the moment,

Lifeisabeach · 10/12/2016 20:21

It was a rainy one for us today. I made it for 8am to help set up the course and DCs even came and helped too. I was worried whether I'd put the flags in the right place but the distance came out bang on 5k, so all good.

DS got a PB of 24.52 so he was very pleased. DD got her second best time of 32.23, which was really good considering how wet and slippy it was. A lovely parkrunday all in all Smile

FiftyNineOhEight · 10/12/2016 20:25

We had a wet one too.

One of our eight year olds did his 100th run today, and PB'd. Both his parents, and his two older siblings already have their 100 shirts, so we worked out that as a family they have run more than 2.5 million parkrun metres Grin

I'm so jealous of anyone who has kids that want to parkrun miked99, I wish I could parkrun Christmas Day!

Well done on your t-shirt chutneypig, I must say it's my least worn one, don't know why really!

Don't forget if timings allow you can run twice nyd Gypsyfl0ss Wink

I felt awful yesterday, left late and put my signs out and almost went home. I ran but with very heavy legs and felt very light headed when I went home, all went after a couple of drinks and some brekkie though. Just a bit of drizzle towards the end here but then it poured all day. Only 69 runners though which felt very quiet after the last few months of closer to 100.

GypsyFl0ss · 11/12/2016 09:49

Sadly I can't do two runs in a row Cinnamon or indeed more than 5.5k ATM. I'm working on a slightly ropey hip that needs at least 48 hours between runs and tonne of stretching to work!

Spurred on by the parkrunners I've met I have contacted our local running club for some trial sessions with them before joining. I'm hoping they will help me progress...

Miloarmadillo1 · 11/12/2016 13:48

I did my third parkrun yesterday and am stuck at exactly the same time of 33.12, I have been within a second of this every time! My first run actually felt best, I ran behind someone who had a nice steady pace that suited me. Last two I ran with my 10 yr old, who alternately complains he is tired and shoots off ahead, stops to tie his laces, take off his jumper...you get the idea, all of which stopped me settling to a pace. He gets to the final hill and sprints off, while I lumber up red faced and sweaty, so he could easily do a better time if he applied himself. How do I get a bit faster? (Apart from ditch the 10 yr old!)

GypsyFl0ss · 11/12/2016 14:45

Milo I've only done 3 and managed to knock a couple of mins off each time and for me the biggest factor is starting in the front half of the group so that I'm setting my starting pace with the swift runners, even if they head off like hares it gives me a good start.

Miloarmadillo1 · 11/12/2016 15:51

Thanks Gypsy, I might try that. I have been starting right at the back with the kids, dogs and slow people but you do end up shuffling the first bit whilst everyone gets themselves sorted out. A time starting with a 32 would be progress!

GypsyFl0ss · 11/12/2016 18:42

Yeah I started with the dogs and the 7mths pregnant woman on my first one. I had an epiphany when I looked at the runner in front and thought how slow she was running and I was behind her so therefore even slower! I realised I need to be inspired....this week it was the bloke with the 36lb para backpack Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 12/12/2016 21:35

I think if you're going for a Pb it may be worth it but to improve generally I think you need to run a bit further a few times a week and the best way to improve time is hill or interval training. Go and run and enjoy it for now, 3 parkruns is still very early.

Miloarmadillo1 · 13/12/2016 14:55

Not going to happen at the moment, cinnamon though I take your point. In order to get any 'me time' to exercise, I am getting up to do a 6.30am bootcamp twice a week in the dark! It does involve quite a bit of running but as part of a circuit. I might make it my mission for 2017 to get a sub 30 by the end of the year.

cinnamongreyhound · 13/12/2016 21:56

That's me too Milosrmafillo1, head torch running at silly o clock, with one evening and parkrun.

MelanieCheeks · 15/12/2016 17:48

Here's the cake. I even used the Mumsnet tip of brushing with vodka to remove any icing sugar marks. And I've make some biscuits too, iced with the parkrun symbol (and some with barcodes). And a friend has just reminded me he'll be running his 100th this Saturday too, so there will be LOTS of goodies!

cinnamongreyhound · 15/12/2016 21:19

Awesome!

miked99 · 17/12/2016 01:03

For once I was glad of the 7am start as it was building up to be a stinking hot day - though I practically had to drag my son there as school finished for the year yesterday.
As a result it was a very large turnout for our local parkrun with more dogs and prams than usual too.
The best thing I can say about my performance was that I beat all the prams and dogs !

FiftyNineOhEight · 17/12/2016 07:16

Great effort Melanie!

mike I love waking up on Saturday mornings and seeing your updates.

I am up early as a few of us are off on tour to Rushmere this morning.

Apologies for not name checking everyone. Am on my phone with no glasses and it is giving me a headacheSmile See you all later and hope you have good runs!

I returned to parkrun today Smile it felt so good to be back out running, i probably pushed it too much so I'm suffering now but I really enjoyed it.
