This is a continuation of the parkrunning thread where are all are welcome to chat about tourism, tee-shirts, PBs and everything else parkrun (and sometimes non-parkrun) related.

If you have been lurking on a previous thread now is the time to come out and say hello Grin. Like parkrun we're very inclusive and always welcoming to new starters Smile. And we love hearing about new courses we haven't been to Smile

Late check in for last Saturday (or an early one for this week!)

sweetvparsley - can't help with the translation but we had a bare-foot Polish runner touristing with us on Saturday, he usually runs at Gdansk though I never did find out why he was with us!
A while ago we had a posse from UK Lunatics who usually run in minimalist sandals but I think one ran barefoot. Doesn't appeal to me at all :)
We also had Blathers and I even managed to chat a bit whilst wrangling the results into some sort of order.

Melanie - I love the t-shirt, especially the 'so I have' - takes me right back home :)

DS and his little mate are RDs this week. They have been desperate to have another go but we made them wait until they had the time to meet up and write the run report - have to do all of the job! I am on 'lurking in the background and not interfering' duty :o

Blatherskite · 22/10/2015 19:50

I know the UK Lunatics :) I bet I could guess the name of the totally barefoot one.

It was good to see you last weekend feet.

More touring this weekend. I'm off to Long Eaton. Assuming I feel better that is.

cinnamongreyhound · 22/10/2015 20:39

I have a safeguarding course 9.30-1 Sad

feetheart · 22/10/2015 22:56

cinnamon - inconsiderate course planners Wink

Blathers - if I remember correctly he carried his sandals round with him Hmm

MelanieCheeks · 22/10/2015 23:15

Called into a teeny bead/craft shop today, to get a suitable button for Colin glen ( feetheart, tea waster, it's the wee one down the side of primary....) .

Lovely helpful lady picked me out a tiny green star, for 3 pence.

chutneypig · 23/10/2015 06:54

That's lovely about your DSL and his friend feetheart. I loved photos from last time they did it.

Long Eaton is within striking distance of us Blathers so I'm keen to hear how it stacks up!

What a pain cinnamon.

Did you manage to get out Fiftynine?

The T shirt is a masterpiece Melanie. I'm still so impressed with that run.

it's DDs 10th run tomorrow, so she wants to run with her father, as opposed to slow old me. Which means I get DS who is very keen on pacing me to a PB. Apart from the fact I seem to have inadvertently signed up for a spin class today with one of my colleagues. They're dark right? No ones going to see if I'm not pushing it Grin.

Nooooo Thursday Smile

Looking forward to PB new tomorrow chutney Smile. Well done to your DD on her 10th run Star

feet DS2 and I might try to come tomorrow. We are off to visit DS1 today, so it will depend how much time we spend stuck on the A1 this afternoon/evening and whether I can face getting into a car again this weekend.

Hope you feel better Blathers

Shame about the course cinnamon

I didn't run yesterday, but DS2 and I had a nice ramble around our local country park instead.

TRexingInSportsDirect · 23/10/2015 09:13

Hello, I've never heard of parkrun before (this came up on Active Conversations). I'm thinking of doing it though! I've googled, there is one locally. I have some stupid questions, could someone please help? Ok:

  1. Do I have to actually be able to run 5k before I start? I can walk 5K, with bits of running interspersed, will that do, to start off?
  1. When you first start, what sort of time is within reason? I think my (approx.) 5k takes about 40-45 minutes running and walking (mostly walking - also I'm not sure my normal route is exactly 5k - it's thereabouts).
  1. Do you think people will be nice and friendly, and I will be able to follow the route easily and not get lost, and basically, would you recommend it as a thing to do?

Thanks.

ThursdayLastWeek · 23/10/2015 09:23
  1. no Smile lots of people walk/run, especially if it's a hilly course like my home one!

  2. our tail runner usually come in around the 50/55 minute mark. So I would say you're perfectly within a reasonable time, though there is no time limit and no one really gives a monkeys how long it takes the last person. Within reason I suppose.

  3. yes, park runners are an outstandingly friendly bunch, the route will be well marked with marshals where necessary and YES, I think I speak for us all when I recommend it!

  4. YOU MUST REPORT BACK TO US Wink

MelanieCheeks · 23/10/2015 09:23

Oh Thursday! At least it's made some progress.

Hi Trexing!

  1. You can walk it all if you like, or mix of run and walk.
  2. First go, depends really. 40 ish minutes is not uncommon. If you check out your local parkrun's results page you can see the range of times that people have done it in.
  3. Having been at nearly 30 different parkruns all over the UK, their overriding common feature is the friendliness and supportiveness. Marshalls or arrows will guide you round, you won't get lost. Would I recommend it? Hell yeah!
feetheart · 23/10/2015 09:26

TRexing welcome to you new obsession :o

To answer your questions:

  1. Walking and running will be fine, you will find quite a few people do the same thing
  2. 40-45 minutes is fine too. Have a look at the latest results for your local parkrun and see what time the people towards the end come in at. We regularly have people finishing between 50-55mins. We also always have a tail runner who will talk/encourage you round if you want it and will always come in as the last finisher.
  3. DEF, DEF, DEF a great thing to do :) People will be friendly and helpful and the route should be well signed and have very supportive marshals cheering you round and making sure you don't get lost

Would be lovely to see you if you make it fiftynine. There will be cake as DS has started half term and wants to bake :)

Thurs - boo

feetheart · 23/10/2015 09:30

YOUR Blush

cinnamongreyhound · 23/10/2015 09:44

Rubbish ThursdayLastWeek Sad

HalleLouja · 23/10/2015 10:36

Tomorrow is my 49th parkrun and looks like it is going to be at Oak Hill. Its my 49th parkrun and in my old stomping ground. In fact I worked in the park and lived up the hill. I think the course is quite flat though.

Blatherskite · 23/10/2015 12:02

TRexing you MUST parkrun. It is a wonderful, awesome, friendly, inclusive thing and becomes an addiction within a very short space of time.

Register today (it takes 24 hours for you to show up on the system), print out your barcodes (you'll need one at the end so tuck it somewhere safe while you run, get there 15/20 minutes early for the pre-run briefing and have fun.

Then come back and tell us how much you loved it Grin

TRexingInSportsDirect · 23/10/2015 12:24

Wow thanks everyone - sold! I've registered. I have a thing tomorrow but I need to find out what time. I'll start tomorrow if I can, or next week if not. I'm excited! I'll definitely let you know how it goes.

cinnamongreyhound · 23/10/2015 13:05

Sorry TRexingInSportsDirect, my iPad had failed to update so I didn't see any posts from yours down! Everyone has answered everything I think! I started in March 2013, became on RD (run director) in August and then took over as ed (event director) March 2014 and I think in 136 parkruns since my home run started I have missed 10-12 Saturday's Shock

MelanieCheeks · 23/10/2015 13:49

Platt park, south Manchester, is my plan for tomorrow.

I may be hungover-in in the city to see my daughter performing with Evelyn glennie on Saturday night in the Royal northern college of music. But we are meeting up tonight, so may have to have a cocktail or 3.

Looking forward to all your run reports, you too trexing!

Blatherskite · 23/10/2015 14:07

I'm not sure I'm going to be well enough to get up at 5.30am for touring tomorrow Sad

I'm not even sure I'm going to be well enough to run at all Sad Sad

The endless sickness has gone (no I'm not pregnant!) but I still have a non-shiftable headache and earache. On the plus (?) side, this whole things started with a monster headache a week ago so maybe it's on it's way out?

sweetvparsley · 23/10/2015 14:33

TRex I want to add may voice to the chorus of people urging you to take up a regular Parkrun - its a wonderful way to start the weekend.

I think that I will do a run tomorrow even though my arm still feels a bit bruised and unfortunately heavy rain is currently predicted over my local course at 9am - I am a true addict.

Blathers I did Long Eaton a few weeks ago and found a lovely bunch of people and an almost totally flat, mostly tarmacked course with only one section which might be a bit muddy if it rains tomorrow. I hope you're feeling well enough tomorrow.

While I have been off work, I found You Tube video of Long Eaton (there's quite a long bit of footage of me in it but I am too shy to say where I can be seen!)

ThursdayLastWeek · 23/10/2015 14:52

I'm volunteering tomorrow, barcode scanning Smile

FiftyNineOhEight · 23/10/2015 18:49

Welcome TRexing. Hope you make it tomorrow. And I am glad that this thread is spreading the word!

Melanie sounds fab. I met EG about 20 years ago - she was on tour and visiting where I lived at the time, and one of my chums, who was involved in the local arts scene invited her and her pianist (and me!) over to dinner. She is such an interesting person.

Blathers hope you feel better soon my love.

CAKE you say feet - what sort Wink? I will try to persuade DS2 out of bed, but having done it today so we could go visit DS1 I might not manage it two days in a row Grin

So Halle is next week your 50th Grin?

TRexingInSportsDirect · 23/10/2015 20:38

I checked, the thing I need to do is in the afternoon, so I'll start tomorrow, eek! Dh is confused and concerned, haha - I have never been a fan of running (understatement)! But I would be if I could actually do it and survive which I will, with some practice - building up to it. That'd be a really cool hobby and keep-fit (well, get-fit) thing to do! I've signed up for text alerts of my finish time as well, might be motivational to see that improve, if I get into it.
