Your poor dog Cinnamon! I hope the poorly paw gets better too. I love that photo, your dog's expression is priceless!
Can't recommend on trail shoes, a lot of people seem to be using the Innov 8 trail shoes now. I've just ordered some Salomon Speedcross 3 but I don't need anything too 'grippy' because most trails around here aren't very technical. I hope they are OK as I'm 59kg so not exactly light either for lon distances (although trail runners are generally heavier than road runners aren't they, they need more reserve! Certainly around here they are)
I have Mizuno Waveriders road running - and yes, they have a large toebox, (I am another bunion sufferer).

I second Mizuno for wide feet. I don't have bunions but have always had wide feet to the extent that a lot of normal everyday shoes don't fit me.

cinnamon I hope your poor dog's paw is ok, looks sore.
I always find miles 9-11 hardest in hm too. Have done 10 now and still get that, even though I do a 13+ miles run most weeks anyway. I guess it's because I'm pushing myself much harder in a race and that's when the physical tiredness sets in and the mental novelty of racing has worn off. Then the last 2 miles get better as I know I'm nearly at the end and I can picture whereabouts I am on my usual route home and know I'll be fine.

Horseflies phlebas ? Shock Are they the big beasties that can give you a nasty bite? Our flies are buzzy and annoying but they don't bite yet

5.74 tempo run from me and DS1 today. His pace now matches mine over shorter distances and we kept each other going Smile
1446.98 + 5.74= 1452.72

HalleLouja · 29/07/2015 17:52

11.3 miles to add from my last two runs. My last run was fartleks with my club. My first -and hopefully not last fartleks session. Was really tough but think it will do some good.... Managed to eat lots of flies which really wasn't fun. Yuk.

Makes 1464.02.

Apparently I have mild bunions and wide feet (due to high arches) I have Brooks and they are fine with me.

Anglaise1 · 29/07/2015 18:31

10.2 to add from today
1474.22
Is anyone here on Strava?

OP posts:
lastqueenofscotland · 29/07/2015 19:39

5.08 from me today. Back enjoying it (and improving!) after finding myself stuck in a rut for a long time. Very happy at the moment 1479.3

HalleLouja · 29/07/2015 19:53

Anglaise I am on strava. Maybe we should set up a club. I love Strava.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 29/07/2015 20:09

Another lovely beach/dunes/forest run under fantastic big skies. The weather has been grim most of this afternoon, but it was just right for running by the time I went out . And hardly a soul to be seen. Perfect ending to the daySmile

Purpletoes · 29/07/2015 21:57

I have strava but not used it much. Must look at it properly. Love geeky stuff. Have a garmin.

Just a quick around the block from me tonight when OH came home from work.
2.72.
1482.02

TriJo · 29/07/2015 23:13

Fast 3 miles and a core strength workout with DH earlier, felt good :)

1485.02

HalleLouja · 30/07/2015 06:53

Purple if you are a geek you will love Strava. Trust me as I am a total geek.

I was talking to someone at my club and he was saying to run so your heart beat remains around 135 most of the time. I just got a heart rate monitor for my watch. My try it today. He said to mix that with speed work to improve on times.

The guy who won the Thunder Run and ran 220k in 25 hours is from my club. He was saying that his first marath he ran in 5 hours and now he does them in 2.45 hours. This fits in with a book I am reading called Bounce which says it's all about practice and not natural talent. It's a really interesting book.

PoppyShakespeare · 30/07/2015 08:13

3.2 to add from last night with my daughter, this is a guesstimate as still garminless

joined strava ages ago and think I hooked it up to garminconnect but haven't really looked at it since

1485.02 + 3.2 = 1488.22

Anglaise1 · 30/07/2015 08:14

I'm a geek and am starting to love Strava. It's great because it gives some idea of altitude (not that there is a lot around here!).
I've saved a lot of the routes I do as quite a few of my guests run and I want to share the routes with them as it isn't easy to explain or give directions otherwise. Am I right in thinking that if they have the Strava app and I forward them the routes, they will be able to follow this route easily using their smartphone?
No idea how to create groups or invite friends yet but would be interested?
Halle Bounce sounds an interesting book, I thought you had to have things like a low heart rate etc. in order to be a good runner, I didn't realise that practice was more important.

MorrisZapp · 30/07/2015 08:21

Hiya, I did 6.5 miles last night and have a 10k coming up this weekend. For the rest of the week I'm tapering :) It's my first race and I'm so excited!

1494.72

I'm on map my run, I love it. Could do with recommendations for earbuds though, got cheapies just now and they aren't great.

suzanneyeswecan · 30/07/2015 08:48

Re practice / training vs 'talent' it's both.

Potential to be a good runner varies and depends on running economy and cardiovascular capacity but in order to realize the potential you need to optimize your training.
What is optimal will also vary from person to person ?

suzanneyeswecan · 30/07/2015 08:52

Also the advice to run at 135 bpm, he's on the right lines but possibly not grasped the underlying principle

it would be more useful to choose a percentage of maximum heart rate (or perhaps resting heart rate)

HalleLouja · 30/07/2015 10:04

Anglaise I haven't got to the bit about running per se yet.... But most things its just practice. The guy who has written it is a Tennis Table champion. Here is the book.

I need to do more reading about the Heart Rate stuff before deciding on maximum. It doesn't work for everyone but its got to be worth a go.

suzanneyeswecan · 30/07/2015 10:53

OBVIOUSLY maximizing one's potential is down to practice BUT only a few will have the potential to reach an elite or expert levelin any field

Deliaskis · 30/07/2015 10:54

1494.72

A couple of really short runs for me so far this week, 2.2 and 2.9, so 5.1 to add to the total is 1499.82

HalleLouja · 30/07/2015 11:31

Suzanne that is not what the book is saying. As I say I haven't read anything about running yet but it applies to most sports.

Anglaise1 · 30/07/2015 13:02

Surely you have to have an 'athlete's heart' (i.e. a very low resting heart rate) to start off with? A friend I run with has a resting heart rate of 70 which is a lot. She has been running for years but hasn't improved much and is always out of breath, even though she trains a lot. I think 50 mins for a 10k is about the best performance she will ever do, despite all the training.

HalleLouja · 30/07/2015 13:57

Will report back once I have read more am a bit off track as started reading Marion Keyes novel instead.

Lagoonablue · 30/07/2015 15:03

Been lurking on here for a while. Graduate of c25k and running 4-5 k 3x week since April, really loving it. I got shin splints back in the beginning but got over this. Unfortunately now seem to have Achilles problems. Both are stiff and sore, especially in the morning. Haven't run since Sunday as trying to rest them but they are still sore! I don't want a long lay off. Any suggestions or do just have to wait it out? Can't afford physio tbh. Also stretching seems to make them worse so avoiding them.

familygermsareok · 30/07/2015 15:05

DS1 uses Strava. He got a Garmin 10 for his birthday recently and now takes both this and his phone out Confused
He has made a garminconnect account and we have told him he should be able to automatically link with Strava via this but he hasn't yet downloaded any of his runs to try, he just takes his phone as well!
One thing we have noticed is that there is a big calorie discrepancy between his Garmin and Strava. Both are set up for his weight so I don't know why. Distance, time etc all read similar, but not calories used. Is this maybe because Strava takes hills into account too?
(I like Strava results better cos we always use up way more calories Wink )

I don't do anything techie myself, am not very into that. Just use Garmin for distance or not at all on regular runs, and for pacing in races. Haven't ever tried downloading it.

Itching for a run today as lovely outside but Achilles playing up a bit so went for a cycle instead.

TriJo · 30/07/2015 15:13

I use Strava, mostly because my 4 year old Garmin 305 kicked the bucket after Reading half this year and I haven't bothered replacing it yet. I do quite like it - nice interface and covers multisport training pretty well.

I'd love to get a decent Garmin (910/920), but I'm tempted by the old 310 because it's down to £112 on Amazon and it can be used for outdoor swimming.

suzanneyeswecan · 30/07/2015 15:17

I've read a couple of 'talent is overrated' books, iirc the TL:DR is that hours and hours of practice significantly potentiate the advantages conferred by innate talent.

One thing about running, not everyone can physically cope with very high mileage, and I agree with Anglaise, a low rhr is a necessary (although not sufficient) condition for fast running
