1420 finding it hard to get out these days the weather and I are both miserable Grin

Anglaise1 · 27/05/2015 18:05

Family I'm really pleased the intervals are doing some good. Out of interest, what is the ratio of your training long and slowish runs vs. interval training?
Welcome Ann I hope you find this thread helpful in maintaining your motivation and I hope your shin splints don't return!
Phlebas you will be fine for your HM, don't worry. A long time to go yet.
Cinnamon we are doing well this month, I think we are beating April's mileage already.
6 dog running miles from me today
1426

AnnPerkins · 27/05/2015 18:25

Thanks all for the kind welcome.

Phlebas it was a chest thing that floored me in March. I hope you're back to full strength soon.

EdithDickie · 27/05/2015 20:45

Hi all, been a bit awol lately but glad to see everyone still here Smile

Good luck to the ill and injured. Such a drag. Hoping for fitness soon.

I have 11.5 miles to add. 5.5 from a race on Saturday (hilly and hot and generally horrible as I was a little hungover as well - felt better afterwards but the actual run was painful!) and 5 from this morning.

EdithDickie · 27/05/2015 20:46

That doesn't add up to 11.5, the remaining 1 is from a little sprint I did just to see how fast I could cover a mile if I really went for it (7.56 - all flat or slightly downhill - going to do that particular mile regularly and see if I can shave a bit off)

EdithDickie · 27/05/2015 20:47

Ã?1437.5Ã?

EdithDickie · 27/05/2015 20:47

Oops - bold fail!

1437.5

Hi - am coming back to running after 3 kids in 5 years - and I think I have shin splints. Achy pain, like a bad bruise, on inside lower shin. Both sides. I rested for 6 weeks, bought new shoes after gait analysis. Done a couple of 6/7km runs last week and now the pain is back. Any ideas as to what I can do as I'm getting really annoyed and unhappy about not being able to run.

Any of you lot able to help with what to do next please?!?

AggressiveBunting · 28/05/2015 01:21

Welcome socks. Re shin splints, when I had mine I basically ran through it, as I was training for an ultra and ended up having to make a "kill or cure" decision to avoid not being fit enough. I'm not sure that's generally advised though. I also sat with a bag of frozen peas on each shin for an hour after long runs (pre-kids. The idea of getting an hour to sit down now is laughable) and did a lot more stretching of my calves and hamstrings. I also ensured that I didnt fly out of the blocks but did a couple of slowish km, then stretched, then carried on. Another thing you could try are compression socks (anecdotal)

EdithDickie · 28/05/2015 06:36

Hi Socks, sorry to hear about the pain. My workmate had a couple of sessions of physio for when she had what she thought was shin splints. It was something else to do with narrow channel for the blood vessels or something like that. She was given some advice and exercises to help. Is a visit to a physio possible for you?

SocksRock · 28/05/2015 06:44

I can go to my GP for a referral, but as it's not acute, I would imagine it would be a wait. Other suggestion of tendonitis has been mooted - treatment is ibuprofen and ice as per shin splints. Will have a go at that, and running on the rec rather than the road and going back to the start of c25k. I've also just got a voucher for a months swimming for £5 so maybe keep fitness up for a month like that. I also need to lose weight Blush. Just so frustrating

AggressiveBunting · 28/05/2015 09:12

Adding10k (6.3miles) of track work to make 1444. It was my first time on the track since 1991 when I used to represent the school at 200m ( not a massive achievement at my school tbh. Most of the other kids smoked too much to be able to run). We did 200/200/400/600/800/1km intervals at 90% and then back down through the distances with 200m or 400m recovery jogs in between. God it was tough. Shows I'm not cut out for road because I was only averaging 4.2 mins/km and nearly blowing a gasket. Not gonna win Parkrun like that, am I? ??It was also bastard hot- 30 degrees and 90% humidity. Think I'll stick to my nice slow trail runs from now on.

holmessweetholmes · 28/05/2015 09:17

Noooo! 10 days before HM day and I've woken up with a terrible sore throat. Am supposed to be running 18k today and not sure if I should. Sad

HalleLouja · 28/05/2015 10:45

Holmes I would have a rest. Surely you are in the taper zone now.

emummy · 28/05/2015 10:59

Have a rest today holmes, better safe than sorry. Hopefully it'll be a short term thing.
2.8 easy miles from me in the sunshine.

1446.8

holmessweetholmes · 28/05/2015 11:12

I think I might go for a short, easy run. I haven't actually run since Saturday because we've had visitors staying, so I don't want to go too long without doing any at all.

Anglaise1 · 28/05/2015 11:42

Holmes yes, do a short easy run today and you still have time for a long run when you are feeling better. Not sure you really need to do as much as 18k in preparation for a HM anyway? Don't do it less than 7 days before the race in any case (but you know that already!)
Aggressive I wondered if you did any intervals in your training! I do my 1000m in 4m25 and my 200m at 3m45 without the humidity so your times were good.
I experimented with imodium today as I'm fed up of pitstops for my GI problems and it worked, with no bad side effects either Smile so I will be taking a couple before my race on Sunday. 8.75 miles this morning
1452.75

familygermsareok · 28/05/2015 12:40

12.36 lovely slow unhurried miles from me this morning. One of my fave routes, mixture of trail and quiet road. No time pressures and no looming races to train for. Sheer bliss! Smile Smile

Anglaise my runs are very variable to fit round my irregular working days. On average I run 4 times a week. I only really do intervals in the 4-6 weeks leading up to a race and I replace one of my runs with intervals, often adding in an extra interval session as well as I can fit these in before I go to work if I get up early enough. So leading up to a race I will be doing between 25-40% interval sessions. But I might then go for a couple of months with no intervals at all. I usually do one longish run (10-13m) at an easy pace most weeks and the rest depend on what time I have, what the weather is like, etc, if time pressured I will do tempo type 4-8 milers, if not I will do more long slower runs or go up into the hills and run the narrow trails, very steep but not fast at all. I primarily run for the love of running though, and only started doing races to add a bit more interest and challenge myself. I find if I do too many races I get too caught up in my performance and it detracts from my overall enjoyment. I do like to do well in the races I do enter though! Grin
I'm glad your Imodium worked well. I always use it for races and definitely helps my GI issues.

familygermsareok · 28/05/2015 12:43

Forgot to add miles
1452.75 + 12.36= 1465.11

familygermsareok · 28/05/2015 13:11

holmes I second Anglaise, if you run today take it easy, you won't do yourself any favours pushing yourself if you aren't well. And don't worry about having to fit in an 18k before your hm. It's nice psychologically but you don't need it. If you manage to get another long run in that's great, if not it won't make a huge difference, just take it nice and easy on race day and enjoy the experience without worrying about your time or any walking bits. But don't make yourself ill by pushing yourself too hard now.

Socks I've never had shin splints, thankfully, but I remember reading about exercises that were supposed to help. Basically toe dips. Stand on edge of a step with toes off the edge and point them down as far as you can then lift them up as far as you can and keep repeating this for 30 seconds. Then sit down with your knees bent and do the same. Do a second standing and sitting set and repeat this exercise 3 times a day. I do the opposite with heel dips and raises for Achilles tendinitis and it really works so I squirrelled this info away in case I ever needed it. Have no personal experience of trying it though.

AggressiveBunting · 28/05/2015 13:49

thanks anglaise. This was literally the first time in my life I've done intervals. I guess I'm just querying if I can face that torture on a weekly basis in order to do better times. Basically I want to make podium but without being in any pain, ever Grin. If you don't mind disclosing, what's your 5k time?

Loueytb3 · 28/05/2015 14:34

Rubbish at posting, I have 10 days of running to post - I've just totted it up and it comes to 39.42 miles. Shock

I'm quite pleased actually as I wanted to up the ante to see if my body could cope with running 4-5 x per week before I start marathon training. It appears it can. Hurrah.

Hello to all the new and returning runners Smile

Halle very well done - you are so nearly there, 3 days to go...

holmes poor you, an easy run today sounds like a good compromise

socksrock I would get a referral for physio - it may be quicker than you think. In the meantime, anti-inflammatories might help. Also google in case there are specific exercises for it.

aggressive - interested in your intervals - so did you do 200m at 90% capacity, then 200m recovery, then another 200m set, then 400m at 90% / recovery, up to 1km and then another 1km and back down again?

and family belated congrats on your 1st place - I would be over the moon with that, small field or no small field.

1465.11 + 39.42 = gets calculator out 1504.53

HalleLouja · 28/05/2015 14:47

Louey I still need to get on the bike and do today's.

HalleLouja · 28/05/2015 14:49

Pressed send too soon. Nearly 40 miles in ten days is amazing. I managed 18 last week (plus biking) and that was enough. Am doing Whipsnade 10k in 10 days if you have signed up for that. I did it last year and it was my first race. A few of us on here did it. It is mainly flat but I noticed a slight slope when I was there yesterday.

holmessweetholmes · 28/05/2015 14:52

Thanks for the encouraging words! I set out for a short run but it turned into mostly a brisk walk! Am going to focus on looking after myself and fighting off the dreaded lurgy as quickly as possible so that I can still have a chance of making the run.
