Hi everyone, new thread started! Grin

OP posts:
PoppyShakespeare · 14/05/2015 14:49

thanks Suzanne, yeah it's not the severity as much as the unscientific stabs in dark nature of it

also SO UNFAIR that I don't get the heat intolerance side of it so am still freezing cold, I hope you have warmed up now!

PoppyShakespeare · 14/05/2015 14:56

a normal injury is ok because they grade it, give you clear path of rehabilitation and a timeline and you can find other sports or exercises to do

do know it is not the end of the actual world though it's just demoralising

suzannecanthecan · 14/05/2015 14:58

for the first half of the run I was going great, then I turned back to face the wind and after a couple of miles I feared for my lifeBlush

Is it linked to 'womens midlife hormone changes' at all, might it stabilise once you're through that phase and the rest of your endocrine system has found a new equilibrium??

I know I've been pretty unstable in many ways for the past few nearly 7 years
I think I might be starting to get through it now

PoppyShakespeare · 14/05/2015 15:06

why is it that wind is so unhelpful against you but nothing like as useful in reverse

I hate wind

dunno about menopause, it's (Graves' disease) common in this age group (40-50) but they don't really know why the body just starts making this antibody and it happens at all ages and to men so who knows

holmessweetholmes · 14/05/2015 15:51

Another wind hater here. I run down on the estuary near my house and it's horrendously windy a lot of the time. At least I've got really short hair these days though - it used to drive me mad running with my hair getting in my face (I tied it back obvs, but annoying bits escape!).

lastqueenofscotland · 14/05/2015 16:24

Soooo.... I appear to have a charity place for next years London marathon.
"Ran" it last year with a stress fracture (would not recommend). So hopefully can stay injury free!

holmessweetholmes · 14/05/2015 16:29

Wow - congratulations lastqueen!

PoppyShakespeare · 14/05/2015 16:34

that's awesome lastqueen Flowers

here's to a year of injury proofing Wine

cinnamongreyhound · 14/05/2015 17:21

Excellent news holmessweetholmes!

So sorry you're still struggling PoppyShakespere. It doesn't surprise me it affects running so much. I always assumed overactive was worse than under active. My friend lost 1.5 stone in month before she was diagnosed very scary!

PoppyShakespeare · 14/05/2015 17:38

how long before your friend felt better cinnamon? I've lost muscle and replaced it with fat which doesn't help but is still progress!

cinnamongreyhound · 14/05/2015 17:44

I can't remember it was a long time ago. She isn't on medication anymore, they decreased it slowly and then took her off, while monitoring. But she didn't have to take thyroxine after it was sorted either. Not sure what caused it in the first place though pretty sure it wasn't Graves' disease, she would have been late 20's at that point.

PoppyShakespeare · 14/05/2015 17:54

How's your husband getting on with his thyroid thing?

cinnamongreyhound · 14/05/2015 18:01

Nothing changed with first lot so he's had the dose increased this month and has to go back next Tuesday after a blood test tomorrow so we will see. He still doesn't feel any different!

Anglaise1 · 14/05/2015 18:09

Congrats on your charity place for the VMLM lastqueen Flowers. Its great that you know so early. What charity are you running for?
PoppyS I'm so sorry that the thyroid problem is taking a long time to sort. It must be very difficult not being able to run much, as well as all the other symptoms you are suffering with Graves.
Not too much wind here but the temperature has definitely dropped. 8 dog running miles today
789.9

PoppyShakespeare · 14/05/2015 18:10

Eurgh it all takes so long. Thyroids are annoying, I just want to make peace with mine!

PoppyShakespeare · 14/05/2015 18:13

thanks Anglaise

it might be best to stop running and just try to do plenty of walking with my vivofit instead and learn some patience instead of self pity

Anglaise1 · 14/05/2015 19:01

I've been hearing a lot about the vivofit Polly - what does it measure? I have an old Fitbit One but the Vivio to be the new 'thing' as far as activity trackers are concerned. Do you rate yours?

PoppyShakespeare · 14/05/2015 19:11

No not really, the only advantage is that by sticking with Garmin there's no duplication if I log a run or more likely these days a walk - it underestimates the distance covered etc compared with my FR220 but at a very basic level I do like the ever increasing target each day and it is helpful to have something to aim for but I guess any pedometer would do that?

PoppyShakespeare · 14/05/2015 19:12

It doesn't tell me anything useful about my sleep, just that there's not much of it, but at least it never needs to be charged and communicates easily with the Garmin connect app on my phone so everything is in one place

Deliaskis · 14/05/2015 19:25

Not run since Saturday as had a bit of a cold, but 4.2 for me today. Was trying to run a bit faster, so felt it at the end, but feel better for having done it! In other news, had one ear syringes today, had been blocks for ages, and I feel like a new woman, it's like they cleaned out my brain as well, but everything is VERY LOUD, so felt like I was pounding along on my run tonight!

794.1

cinnamongreyhound · 14/05/2015 20:52

My friend bailed on me tonight and I am shattered so settled for a longish dog walk instead.

lastqueenofscotland · 14/05/2015 21:22

Thanks all!! Running for Antony Nolan :) a friend of mines wife was saved by a bone marrow donation so great cause Imo!

Clearly was fired up by this, ran 10k on the dot home in 44.57!!!!

runtothehills · 14/05/2015 21:30

Lovely evening for our 6 mile hill race with clear blue skies and lovely cool temperature. 1st anniversary of my first ever hill race and knocked 10 mins off last years time Grin and got the sub-hour I was aiming for so a very happy bunny (also avoided vomiting in front of the marshall at the top, which I did last year Blush).

Holmes thats fab about the club, I was really nervous before going along to my club, they are all big hill runners, but they are lovely. There are always some slow plodders, and a lot of the weekend runs are at an easy pace. We also do a lot of handicap runs so everyone is running on an even keel.

Aggressive went to HK on honeymoon 15 years ago, think I need a wee return visit, maybe to try one of your epic trail races! Good luck for this weekend, and MdS OMG mucho respect!

6 + 2 warm up/cool down = 802.1

HalleLouja · 14/05/2015 22:07

4.5 ish miles with my lovely run club. I think I prefer rain to heat when it comes to running. I felt like crap and almost didn't go. Didn't help that someone had blocked in DHs car at work and he nearly didn't make it home in time. Fecking Garmin didn't start for ages.

Make 806.6.

HalleLouja · 14/05/2015 22:08

PS I hate wind but don't mind a bit of rainy drizzle. In fact I prefer drizzle to sun to run in.
