4 faintly radioactive miles from yesterday's scan - it all still feels much harder and faster and further than it is

AggressiveBunting · 25/03/2015 13:37

Another v hilly 3 miles from me this evening. Really CBA but my friend dragged me out. Just feel a bit 'meh' this week - maybe post-race slump. Giving myself permission to just keep it ticking over until I get back from holiday after Easter. 1390.5

Runrunrun1 · 25/03/2015 14:14

Hello, can I join?! I started doing the NHS couch 2 k plan a while ago, and completed week 6 on Sunday. All long runs from now on! I am really loving it, not having done any "proper" exercise for years and years. The only thing is that I can only manage to get out 2x a week, unless I run for 3 days in a row. Do you think that matters, and do other people run without a rest day? Thanks!

twobambinos · 25/03/2015 15:55

1390.5 plus my 3.1 is 1393.6

Welcome runrunrun and well done on completing the c25k. For most of the first winter that I was running I was only out once a week its too dangerous to run in the dark where I am. And I got on just fine with my running in that time. I was doing a bit of exercise bike too though. Id say 2 days a week is fine and it def beats sitting on the couch sure every little bit helps.

Aggressive are you going somewhere nice on holidays for Easter?

I hope everyone's injuries are healing nicely

Wondered if anyone could give some advice about helping DS (11) to improve his running technique. Background - he's tall (5ft 4) and solidly built and he DOES need to exercise more, which we're working on. He has just been diagnosed with flat feet and his left foot over-pronates by about 10% - we had noticed he was walking and running strangely, so we took him to see a podiatrist. Now he has corrective supports in his shoes which have definitely helped straighten out his foot, but he still struggles to push off, and spring easily when running. He's very stiff-limbed and not very flexible, he finds it very difficult indeed and is just starting to become self-conscious about it.

He's playing soccer three times a week and we really want to help him make the most of his time on the team. He's enjoying it very much but last night got upset because he said everyone else knows what they're doing and can run really fast. We talked about it and he calmed down and joined in the practice, we were so proud of him! But how can we help him learn how to run - is it simply just practice, or can we help with specific techniques, bearing in mind his feet/tight muscles/unruly running style?!

Would love to hear your thoughts. Thank you!

ImBrian · 25/03/2015 20:26

5 miles from me, a bit of regrouping took it up a bit higher then we expected. It's the first time I've ever ran that far so over the moon.

Checking in for some motivation! No running from me in 10 days and I've not really much of an excuse so feeling very annoyed with myself. Having to.work at home in the evening tonight and yesterday as not enough hours in the day, which has meant I've devoured so much rubbish! Must try and get out tmrw or I'll get fat!

Wel Done on the times for hm and marathon last wknd! Super impressed!!

twobambinos · 25/03/2015 21:26

Itsveryyou have you tried physio they could give u exercises or Pilates?

Well done Brian on the long run that's brill keep up the good work

karatekimmi · 25/03/2015 21:42

1401.7 with my 5k from tonight.

Pleased that I've managed to get out, but I think I'll only make 2 runs this week. I could jam a run in, but it would be a be of a force!!

cinnamongreyhound · 25/03/2015 21:47

Hi Runrunrun1! I started running with c25k from doing nothing at all Smile

No idea I'm afraid itsveryyou!

I couldn't run yesterday as I didn't have a car to get to meeting point and my friend cancelled today. Made last minute plans for an early morning run tomorrow, phew Smile make the most of the next 13 days!

Neeko · 25/03/2015 22:08

An extra run from me today. That's the first time I've run two days in a row. Wondering whether I'll be sore tomorrow.

TwoBambinos We're off to Borneo (live in Asia already so it's a shortish flight for us). Going with 2 other families with similar aged kids so I'm hoping they'll all entertain one another leaving me to play cards and drink gin.

sazor Sympathising with the motivation slump. I think it's a case of just getting your trainers on and doing short runs till you feel the motivation for something longer- just to keep it ticking over. I have a poster that says "If you're tired of starting over, stop quitting" to remind myself that anything is better than nothing.

runrunrun welcome! I often run 6 days a week, so running consecutive days with no break isn't necessarily problematic BUT make sure the middle day is an easier day (I'm not familiar with C25k so sorry if that doesnt fit into the program). At the same time, if you can stick to twice a week, that's still great, so maybe do that to start with and then see how you get on. In the meantime, add your miles to our total!!

cinnamongreyhound · 26/03/2015 08:15

Well that was bloody wet and windy!!! Proper pink body when we got back! And little dog hates me but I felt much better for it Smile

1410.9

emummy · 26/03/2015 12:39

It's not a nice day is it cinnamon! Have done my least favourite session - intervals! Yuck. Think for me they are as much a mental workout as a physical one. 3 degrees, raining, windy, God that shower felt good!

Runrunrun welcome, congrats on your C25k and yes, you can run 3 days on the trot if you want. You'd probably enjoy running more spacing out your runs a little, and it also gives your muscles time to repair but it isn't always possible. Like Aggressive I often run on consecutive days 5 or 6 days a week without a problem.
Itsveryyou no idea how to help your son, but I'm sure if he is playing soccer 3 times a week the fitness and increase in speed will develop naturally.
Sazor do you have any races you can sign up for? That could help your motivation in running.
6 miles from me today, first outing after the marathon as my legs feel nearly back to normal although my club coach would go mad if he knew I'd started running again so soon. First run on the footpaths, yay! Bored with road running, it was really nice to be doing the tracks again, even though some are still quite muddy.
Thinking of doing a HM in 3 weeks....

Runrunrun1 · 26/03/2015 15:15

Hi everyone and thank you for the nice welcomes! It was wet and v windy here and I didn't really fancy going out, but I wanted to tell you how I'd done so I went. I'm on week 7 of c25k, so a 25 min run. Was a bit tough running into the wind!! I can't add my distance as I don't know how far I went. I don't have a phone I can put an app on and use my iPod to run with, so not sure how to track my distance. All I can say is I ran for 25 mins and I didn't stop! Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 26/03/2015 15:50

You can get the Nike+ app on an iPod nano Runrunrun1 or if you know where you've been you can plot on mapmyrun when you get home on computer, of course only if you're interested in knowing Grin

Runrunrun1 · 26/03/2015 16:04

Pool thank you cinnamon, will have a look at those!

Runrunrun1 · 26/03/2015 16:05

Pool?? Meant to say cool.......

Anglaise1 · 26/03/2015 16:51

Forgot to add the total
1421.6

EdithDickie · 26/03/2015 16:52

Well done runrunrun!

10 miles fighting with the wind for me today. It was one of those horrible ones! Struggled to keep going, everything hurt and it was all just a real slog. Obviously spent a lot of it telling myself I am a fool to think I can do a half marathon and that the endurance thing is the worst idea in the world - I get very melodramatic at times . Now I'm home though I can say I quite enjoyed it and that 3 weeks to hm and 6 to endurance thing gives me plenty of time to work on core strength and hopefully reduce the ouchiness of my hips and glutes.

True what they say - my worst battles are definitely with my head!

Suzannewithaplan · 26/03/2015 17:27

9.75 from me
1431.35

I went to see the physio today and it turns out that the problem is coming from the Sacrotuberous ligament (not the piriformis)
Of course I was worried he would say that the problem is caused by running I so I should run less.
happily he said running is highlighting a problem with my posture which is causing problems with the ligament.
he advised shorter more frequent runs and making every third run longer.
So I shall revise my schedule and concentrate on tucking my tailbone under/not sticking my bottom out.

Certainly explains why all my piriformis stretching wasnt having any impact!

Suzannewithaplan · 26/03/2015 17:38

re running into the wind, I quite like it because it cools you down and my worst enemy when running is being too hot Angry
then again I have no choice but to like it since all my runs are by the sea and it's never not windy

I suspect the relief offered by the windy seafront will be the only way I'll be able to keep running through the summer

Runrunrun1 · 26/03/2015 19:54

Yay, used mapmyrun and I ran 4.05k today, so 1435.40. Quite pleased with that! Suzanne, not really thought about running in the summer.... I was pretty red after today!

cinnamongreyhound · 26/03/2015 20:02

Glad you managed to figure out mapmyrun Runrunrun1, our total is in miles so not quite as much to add I'm afraid, I think it's 2.5? Making total 1433.85. 4k for week 7 is great Grin my first 5k was about 3 months after finishing the c25k and took me 34mins.
