Hello everyone! 2.6 from me in the pouring rain. It was surprisingly nice (made me feel like a proper runner!), but my legs felt like lead on the walk home. Your time is amazing runtothehills, I can't imagine getting to that. Anyway, week 7 of c25k is now complete.

Runrunrun1 · 03/04/2015 09:45

Sorry, should have said, 54.98 Easter Smile

Whowouldfardelsbear · 03/04/2015 09:50

OK - i have a question for you seasoned runners.

My run tonight was the longest I've ever done - over 40 minutes, and I think I have experienced my first case of chaffing knickers. A google search of suitable undies seems to suggest that going commando is the best option - so - does anyone want to tell me whether this is actually a good option? I run in running tights/leggings, so any other suggestions for appropriate underwear welcome Grin

suzannecallmestan · 03/04/2015 09:55

Who, Ive never had a problem with knickers under tights or chaffing in general and often run for 2 hours or so

I wear m and s 'no vpl' knickers if thats relevant?

Whowouldfardelsbear · 03/04/2015 10:01

Hmm -maybe it's just time to retire my old cotton undies then!

cinnamongreyhound · 03/04/2015 10:10

That's what I gather OhOneOhTwoOhThree, Dr thinks that why he's had the problems with his sinuses and the reason the medication didn't work well and the maintenance drugs they've given him aren't maintaining. But he also falls asleep most evenings (which he'd put down to working hard and getting older), has a lot of joint pain and skin problems as well as high cholesterol despite a healthy diet and the Dr thinks sorting thyroxin levels will help all of those as well. He's got a month at this dose and then see how it goes but after 10 days he doesn't feel any better so we will see.

whowouldfardelsbear I can honestly say my undies are one thif that has never chaffed when running. Mine are the short type ones, they just cover my bum so not long like boxers iyswim.

Was raining when I woke up but had turned into a very ime mist by the time I left home so a very pleasant 4.25 miles with canicross club, dogs are suitably worn out for us to go out for the day 59.23.

emummy · 03/04/2015 10:21

runtothehills well done!
cinnamon it does take a while for the thyroxine to work but once it does it's great! I take mine religiously, never want to go back to that horrible slow, foggy brained way!
whowould my best underwear is a pair of boxers from Falke. They are so comfy, sweat wicking, no chafing, don't slip down, wonderful!
4.6 from me, mix of easy pace and tempo, felt good

cinnamongreyhound · 03/04/2015 10:23

The gp led dh to believe that if it was going to work emummy he'd feel a difference within a week? Which is why he's been a bit disappointed that it may be a long road of fiddling with doses as he feels the same.

PoppyShakespeare · 03/04/2015 10:33

he can have some of my thyroxine if he wants, am producing loads and loads of it :(

actiongirl1978 · 03/04/2015 11:17

Oh anglasie I hope you get some answers from your GP. I think that running takes up such a big part of our lives and marathon training in particular, that it must feel very empty when there is no goal to focus on. Having said that, you sound like a very motivated person so maybe the trick is to find a goal outside of running that excites you - instead of the paperwork etc.

My underwear doesn't chafe, but I have to wear my baggiest oldest knickers. I wear a size 14 big white grey pair that are my period knickers too Grin. I tried wearing the no VPL shorts but they just rode up a lot. My running shorts have built in knickers but I haven't been brave enough to wear them without pants yet!

I am adding 2 miles of very fast uphill walking on the treadmill (if I am allowed?!) I tried the cross trainer but it aggravated my knee. I then also went on the arm bike for a few minutes, I didn't want to do too many weights in case I hurt my knee because I was tired and hungover and couldn't be bothered and now I am a bit down again as I have just weighed myself and I've put on 4 pounds in two weeks.

Physio is Tuesday and I am hoping for a miracle! No anglaise it isn't free, I am paying £45 but if I waited for a GP appointment the HM would have come and gone before I got a referral.

runrunrun of course you are a runner! If you run you are a runner! Welcome to the most inclusive gang!

actiongirl1978 · 03/04/2015 11:20

poppy I hope you feel a bit better soon xx

orangeflutie · 03/04/2015 11:48

4 miles to add from me plus another 4 from Wednesday. Had a lovely damp run this morning and also quite warm. Went out about 8.00 and only saw three people and a couple of dogs. PerfectSmile

Cinnamon hope your DH feels better soon.

I know things are difficult for you Poppy too. Are you managing to run much?

HalleLouja · 03/04/2015 11:53

3.3 miles of intervals to add. 69.13

EdithDickie · 03/04/2015 11:58

Whowould commando all the way for me!

Hope everyone is feeling healthier soon Sad

PoppyShakespeare · 03/04/2015 12:36

:( no orange, I can manage 4-6 miles slowly but I don't recover, it's not something I'm used to, have always been ok to run for several days consecutively but now it's as if I've run further and faster than ever in my life and everything is fucked for days

it's also probably not a good idea, my resting heart rate has doubled and it was 160 just walking the other day - nobody said not to but gp did say I would find it hard

on the actual plus side (although am not thrilled about it but it has to be a good sign) have started to gain weight I think

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 03/04/2015 13:00

8 very misty humid miles from me. I started getting rib pain at 6 miles (was close to my 10K PB so pushed myself up a massive hill to try to crack it - and missed by 30 seconds. In hindsight not very clever, since I was supposed to be doing a long steady run Smile) so had to run/walk the last two. Stopped my garmin at 8 and walked the last bit home.

cinnamon I have heard that it takes a while for the thyroxine to kick in. We knew DS's thyroid was packing up well in advance and before he really had any symptoms. Because it's related to his other conditions he was screened every year for it - I think it was about three years between the first signs and him starting on medication at the lowest possible dose. if your DH has been ill for some time it will take a while for his body to get back into balance. There have been some threads on here, which made me realise how hard it can be for some people.

poppy sorry to hear you are still suffering.

I am a pants wearer, apart from the occasional time when I have run in the middle of the day and forgotten to bring spare pants for afterwards and the choice was run commando or spend the afternoon at work commando (I get too sweaty to stay in the same pants after I have run in them Blush). Have never had chafing in the bottom area, but have had awful bra-rash a few times, and chafing injuries under the arm from vest seams rubbing Shock

suzannecallmestan · 03/04/2015 14:06

from me 9.95
95.08

lovely cool drizzle kept me at just the right temp :)

reduced pita with low drop shoes, but it was there a bit from 7 miles in.
Worst thing is sitting down afterwardsShock

I'm hopeful about running in the Hoka's

I really hope you can get the hormone situation under control soon Poppy

phlebasconsidered · 03/04/2015 14:26

Took me 7 years to get my thyroid levels right again. I really only ever feel well with my the completely suppressed, and I now take t3 as well as t4, it's the only thing that sorted me out. I take enormous amounts, I'm still under the hospital nearly eight years later.

Three point one miles from me, a really sluggish run from no sleep with the kids "sleepover" last night.

98.09

I wear those shorts style pants. Seem ok up to 6 miles!

PoppyShakespeare · 03/04/2015 14:39

why do thyroids take so long Shock

almost certainly have under activity to look forward to in the long run and that sounds even worse

Anglaise1 · 03/04/2015 14:39

((Poppy)) I'm so sorry you are still suffering from the overactive thyroid. And that you are putting on some weight at last. It must be so difficult not to be able to run as you want.
6 miles from me and my club friend this morning in the rain.
I never get chaffing, not even during really long runs, either in the pants or bra dept. But then I have no boobs or bum. Sitting down is painful for me too Suzanne, just as well I don't have time to do much of that at the moment!

runtothehills · 03/04/2015 14:55

Thanks all for the lovely positive comments. Still a bit high, but my DD's and 3 others are sapping my energy. About to take them out in the rain to walk the dog which should exhaust them keep them entertained Grin

Brian I started running about 2 1/2 years ago, I did a lot of hillwalking/mountaineering before then though so had a baseline of fitness, just started running hills instead as I didn't have enough time to walk them! Don't do much shorter speed work and hadn't done a timed flattish race for a while so was just amazed how much the work has paid off.

Whowould cotton M&S all the way, think sometimes a tena lady would also be of benefit on the downhills Easter Wink

suzannecallmestan · 03/04/2015 15:00

I probably run too slowly for anything to chaffBlush...but that doesnt explain your lack of chaffing Anglaise, not sure what the underlying cause is?

I would probably swap my pita for chaffing
I guess we all have some cross or other to bear!

emummy · 03/04/2015 17:31

I think you're doctor was being a bit optimistic cinnamon, they start at a low dose then gradually work up until blood tests are right. I started on 50 mcg and have ended up on 200, which I think took about 2 years to get to. I did feel a lot better before that but it took a few months I think.

actiongirl1978 · 03/04/2015 18:00

runto thehills I wear a slimline pad the days I am doing long runs or intervals! sprinting often has unwanted effects and on long runs, an inadvertent sneeze can leave you feeling damp for miles.....

orangeflutie · 03/04/2015 18:12

Poppy that sounds crap?? I hope things improve for you soon.
