Would anyone like to join me in training for a half marathon?

It was a thread on this board that basically got me through the C25K programme a couple of years ago. Lots of lovely supportive women pushing each other on.

Now, I've just started training for a half marathon that's at the end of May. I was a fairly confident runner before Christmas as I was doing 12k on my long run, even though I wasn't training with the HM in mind, but then took three weeks out over Christmas and seemed to lose all my fitness and go back to square one almost overnight Angry. Still not back at the level I was before then but at least I'm feeling enthusiastic again, running 4 times a week (8.5k the longest run so far, though) and I need a goal so I've started a 12-week HM programme and today is the end of my first week.

Is anyone doing anything similar who might like to form a virtual support group and get a bit obsessed together?

Well done emummy (am not stalking you around the running threads this evening, honest Grin)

I went out to do 8, slightly misjudged and ended up doing 9. I was overdressed for the heat. Last mile or two were really hard and I felt rotten this evening (I should have eaten something sooner). Three weeks to go for me!

I have been meaning to get new shoes for a while. My toes were really hurting on my run tonight so I have ordered a new pair. Long overdue, even though I have two pairs and try to rotate them I've done almost 500 miles this year (and ran in them for the last 3 months of last year as well).

2 weeks to mine as well!

I did a 10k race yesterday, managed my target of sub-60, but felt awful the rest of the day. I'd indulged in the provided jaffa cakes and scones, which are different from my usual post-run snacks, and I think my body found handling all that sugar an issue.

One of my club mates wasn't able to run, so her husband took her place. being guaranteed a PB. In the results he is listed as "A Male" Grin. They obviously have ways of checking any intentional substitution.

Well I am going for an extreme form of taper for the GNR as because of one thing and another I haven't actually run since my 12 miles the sunday before last. Oh well, I know I can get round and I'll just blame the crowds for my slow pace Grin

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 09/09/2015 10:33

I like your style thereis Grin

Well done on your 10K Melanie, I would love to break an hour.

One of my friends has an interesting set of HM results from a series we both ran, with an unusually fast one somewhere in the middle when she was injured Grin Hmm

Hello!
Since last week's epic 12miler I have done parkrun and an equivalent with the dog in the local woods yesterday - let's call it tapering shall we...?!

BabyThurs had its scan yesterday and is looking good Smile

emummy · 10/09/2015 12:27

Excellent Thursday! Sounds like all is going well

ThursdayLastWeek · 13/09/2015 16:22

Watching a bit of the GNR this morning has got me all excited for next weekend Smile

emummy · 13/09/2015 18:41

Yes it looked good didn't it! My hm will be a little different though - only 700 runners, going through countryside and finishing at a castle! I do enjoy the big races too though.

ThursdayLastWeek · 13/09/2015 19:06

When is yours emummy?
Ours only has about 450 entrants!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 13/09/2015 21:06

Where is feet with her GNR report Grin?

Hello Thursday and emummy Smile

I was thinking of doing 10 miles today, but ended up almost not going out at all, and did just shy of 6 instead.

emummy · 14/09/2015 21:14

Better than nothing OhOne!
Hm is on Saturday Thursday. Forecast at the moment is for 13 degrees and cloudy, which sounds fine to me, hoping it doesn't change. Have run part of the route, decided to leave the rest as a nice surprise. It should be lovely, nice countryside, quiet roads with a couple of little off road bits. Rest day today, lots of rolling & stretching, out tomorrow with dog.

Oh blimey, I don't feel I've done enough long runs, and I don't really want to overdo it before Sunday.

Bought a new pair of socks yesterday, Twinskin, on the recommendation of a fellow club member. Tried them last night at training (4 miles with a few temo sprints during). I'll be able to do 8 miles or so on Wednesday. But I can feel the nerves starting.

ThursdayLastWeek · 15/09/2015 08:20

I definitely definitely haven't done enough long runs either Melanie!

Though going into this pregnant and crazily under prepared has actually made me less nervous, I guess because there's absolutely no pressure!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 15/09/2015 20:45

Too few miles here as well. A perfect storm of life and work getting in the way of running Grin

We will all be fine!

MelanieCheeks · 16/09/2015 11:58

13.7 km done this morning, in as near to race conditions as I could - same time, same kit, same breakfast. (note to self - drink fewer cups of tea).

I did have CheekyDog1 with me though. He's good at helping me up the hills, but the price I have to pay is to carry a plastic bag of poo for several miles, as CD1 has the uncanny knack of knowing when we are furthest from any usable waste bin. [yuk]

So I'm off to wash my gear now, and stick my name on my charity vest.

emummy · 16/09/2015 18:48

Ah, you have a dog like that too Melanie! Mine also is careful to always poo right in the middle of the path, no handy long grass for her! I could use her on Saturday, the hm starts with a short steep hill.

emummy · 19/09/2015 17:20

Done! And a pb which is very unexpected as the route is quite hilly and it was hot today - well, hot for Aberdeenshire! Lots of tired red faced runners today, including me! But the finish was downhill so managed a nice sprint finish, hurray! Hope yours went well Melanie

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 19/09/2015 20:07

Well done emummy!

ThursdayLastWeek · 19/09/2015 20:58

Well done emummy! You must be delighted!

Looking forward to hearing from Melanie too.

Mine is tomorrow morning eeeeeeeee

ThursdayLastWeek · 20/09/2015 15:12

I did it!

It was a v hard and v hilly race, but I did it in 2.30! I'm amazed!

10k definitely my distance Wink

MelanieCheeks · 20/09/2015 16:12

Safely round, even managed my trademark dance across the finish line. Didn't quite go according to plan-I was sticking with the 2-15 pacers, but knew I'd need a wee after an hour. The first portaloos we passed at 40 mins, and I decided to go for them. But it meant I lost over 4 minutes in the queue, and hadn't a hope of catching up with the pacers. So I was happy enough with a 2-20ish time. Conditions were good, lots of our bunch managed pbs, and I got a handshake from the Lord Mayor, in his glittery chain and shiny shoes!

emummy · 20/09/2015 17:02

Well done Melanie and Thursday, good work all round! I think we can all be proud of ourselves. Celebratory biscuits for all!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 20/09/2015 18:51

Excellent work Melanie and Thursday, well done!

feetheart · 22/09/2015 16:36

Very late with a GNR report - I couldn't get back onto MN after the shenanigans of a while ago as I had forgotten both my password and the email I used to register so long ago.

It was hot and it was hard! Is that concise enough?
I did have a lovely few days in the NE, staying in a friend's flat whilst they were camping in Oxford with the rest of my family :) Made sure I got up there in time for the City Games which are amazing as you are SO close to the track. Knew lots more people running this time through my running club and via parkrun so had people to meet up with and go out and eat with. But the actual run was much tougher than I had hoped for and even though I had done the training this time I was only about 20 seconds ahead of my time from 2 years ago (and about 12mins slower than my PB :()
However I ran for the RNLI and they had a great reception at the end with showers, food and a massage. Then, rather than join the 2 hour queue for the Metro, I went to the pub on the seafront with many, many other runners and great live music.
My friends in the queue sent me a text when they got back to their hotel in Newcastle and I made my way back, on a very quiet Metro, to the restaurant Grin

feetheart · 22/09/2015 16:38

Oooo, biscuits you say :)
Very well done emummy, Thursday and Melanie
