Woo! How exciting to be the last on one thread and the first on another!

5madthings take it very easy today and see what happens. I take it your 5k will not be miles away from civilisation! As for Sunday, see how you feel but if there's any doubt don't do it. There will be other races, and I say that knowing how frustrating it is to miss something you have been preparing for (got food poisoning before my intended first 10k last year). Hope you feel better and are able to compete.
runtothehills yes the local one is Crathes, am more keen on Aviemore but want to support local races, and quite enjoy the thought of being able to walk to the race instead of worrying about parking etc! Yesterday I got an email from the Fare Challenge with the date of this year's race. Will you be doing that? Am intending to do it again, just the 5k as I had a crap race last year and want to do better!

familygermsareok · 13/02/2015 09:28

5madthings I would try easy run and see how you go but take your inhaler with you and if chest getting tighter abandon run. I run slowly with a viral cough if I feel otherwise ok and doesn't seem to make it worse, but I don't have asthma.
Don't write off the 10k yet, but don't do it if any concern about your breathing, as emummy says there will be other races.

actiongirl I know what you mean. I often find myself eyeing up roads I am driving and marking them down for a run later. And I find myself driving along roads I have run and thinking wow, did I really do this? Smile

feet Grin that made me smile.

Have missed my run window today, bed too warm and cosy this morning and kids off school so I'm stuck now. It's misty and cold outside anyway......

actiongirl1978 · 13/02/2015 10:14

Madthings I have asthma and I run with a chesty cough, I find it makes it no worse, in fact I find it calms it down (regular breathing, distracted by the pain in my legs from the cough maybe!?) However if it's more like the start of a chest infection don't. I find running at the end of a chest infection helps shift things along!

I take ventolin and Symbicort so I have asthma fairly badly and have had it since a child so feel qualified to advise!

Family my kids are off today too so no going out.

Tomorrow is my birthday, and while my husband attends a sporting event I am planning a long run as kids are looked after by grandparents. That makes me quite sad I think, particularly that I am looking forward to it!

No running for me either as schools off and dh abroad. Will get out early tomorrow so dh can go too after, then early again on Sunday before driving dd2 to Dundee for last cross country race. Have found a nearby quiet country road I'm dying to run on, although there is a horrible hill at the start, the reward is beautiful views. Can't wait!

actiongirl1978 · 13/02/2015 11:06

emummy, that sounds perfect!

I've been known to drive circuitous routes homes to measure out a possible new running routes Grin

I'm sat here MNing in DSs room, in the dark(ish) dressed head to toe in Lycra willing DS to nap so i can get out!

not so much willing as giving him the stink eye

feetheart · 13/02/2015 11:23

action - wanting to run on your birthday is definitely not sad. My birthday is in the middle of the summer holidays and we always go camping - the last 2 years I have got up before the others and gone for a run along the beach, makes me feel alive especially as I get older :)

feetheart · 13/02/2015 11:25

Thursday - do you need "go to sleep vibes" from around the country? Love "stink eye" :)

feetheart · 13/02/2015 11:28

Really looking forward to the lighter nights when we can go running over the fields again and not have to get lost run round identical looking housing estates. We even get some decent views round here though I doubt they will compare with emummy's fabulous views.

Anglaise1 · 13/02/2015 11:28

5madthings agree that it is generally accepted that if the cold if above the neck it is OK to run, below then be careful. You'll probably be fighting fit by Sunday.
I've at last got some mileage to add (6.5 not much, but a start) as I restarted running again this morning following a 10 day rest for the tendonitis. I missed it so much. Knee felt a lot better and I'm even considering doing the 10k I've entered on Sunday, but at an easy pace rather than flat out at the usual 13kph.
Happy Birthday for tomorrow Action - not sad at all, I was so pleased that my teaching work was cancelled on my birthday and instead I went out for a 13 mile run in the rain. I enjoyed it so much. If you love running there is nothing better to spoil yourself.
831.1

I shouldn't need any vibes at all feet - the rat bag woke me up at 3am and we 'co-slept' .
He knackered but denying it Angry

I like to go for a run on my birthday because I usually have lots of nice new running gear I asked for!

MiniThursday - 1
Thursday - 0

I am no longer dressed in Lycra but I am in a grump

Suzannewithaplan · 13/02/2015 11:51

?
I ran on my birthday, non runners are surprised by this because they think running is a punishment, they don't realize it's actually a treatWink
Great news on the knee Anglaise? :o

feetheart · 13/02/2015 11:55

Sad Thursday. Will chocolate help you not him

Anglaise1 · 13/02/2015 11:57

Thanks Suzanne! I hope the 10 days was enough. For anyone else injured and forced to stop running to recuperate properly, this article How much fitness do you lose when injured and unable to run? is very interesting. Up to 10 days you lose a little VO2 max ability but no muscle. Longer than 10 days you start to lost muscle as well as VO2max. After 2 months no running you are nearly starting from scratch as far as muscle is concerned!

actiongirl1978 · 13/02/2015 12:58

Jeez that would be scary Anglaise, here's hoping none of us gets benched by any spring injuries..

Oh good, I'm not the only one running on a birthday then!

Feetheart - I love that feeling, the one when you are a few miles into your run and then all of a sudden you get a whoosh of euphoria and grin to yourself about how brilliant it is. (Disclaimer, it hasn't happened much in gloomy Jan or Feb...)

Anglaise, I have checked the weather for the place I will be tomorrow. 8 degrees with a black cloud, although possibly dry. Perfect running conditions I think though possibly with a stiff wind across the bay..

Suzannewithaplan · 13/02/2015 15:23

it is surprising how quickly the body declines when you are sedentary
use it or lose it!

5madthings · 13/02/2015 15:32

Thankyou for all your thoughts etc. I made it out for a 5k after toddler group, before dp went to work. I actually felt crap when I got back from toddlers, vaguely achy and just not well. Took some paracetamol, had a half hour rest and then did 5k and my chest was fine, not tight. I actually feel better for having been for a run Tbh. It was windy and rainy but god did I get hot, my temperature control was of, which always happens if I am a bit ill.

Re time out for running, when I first started, two years ago I did c25km and I couldn't run to the end of the street, but I very quickly picked up and have found that even if I don't go regularly or have a few months break ie last sept through to end of Dec, I can still then go out and do 5km. But even when not running regularly I do still walk/cycle everywhere and with a four year old in the bike seat so I guess I never lose all fitness? Even so I can see huge improvement now I am consistently running four times a week, quicker pace, easier breathing and it just feels easier.

Happy birthday for tomorrow. action have a good run, I ran on my bday, it's not sad at all!

Plus 21.6 from this week making 855.8.

orangeflutie · 13/02/2015 18:40

Hi I chickened out of running in heavy rain and strong winds and went down the gym. I have 4 treadmill miles to add. Staved off boredom with lots of musicSmile

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 13/02/2015 18:48

I forgot to say that I finally feel like a proper runner Grin.

I have had a manky black toenail for ages, which I was covering up with nail polish after I noticed a woman in the changing rooms looking disgustedly at it. Last night when I was changing for my run it had fallen off and in its place was a tiny new baby toenail Smile.

I really looked after my feet when I was marathon training 2 years ago and hardly had a blister, let alone any toenail problems even though I'd been warned to expect them despite the 100's of miles I covered in training.

cinnamongreyhound · 13/02/2015 21:34

Happy birthday for tomorrow actiongirl1978!

Glad you got out 5madthings Smile
