Am getting a bit ahead of myself, but does anyone know how long you would need to leave between half-marathons? I am doing my first in May. If I enjoy it I would like to do one in September which is a 10minute walk from my house. However, 3 weeks after that is the Aviemore half marathon, which looks lovely, very scenic and I really want to do it. Could I do both? Or would that be silly? I know it's ages away, but can't stop thinking about it. Of course, after Edinburgh I may never want to run another half ever again!

I'd imagine that 3 weeks would be enough time to recover Emummy, especially if you are regularly doing long runs which are close to half marathon distance.

Then again I have no idea about racing so hopefully someone with more of a clue can help?

Sorry not posted all week, did a very muddy 3.3 miles on Tuesday as DD was doing her athletics (muddy because I have to run round the top of the track and the adjacent footy pitches) and then a v v cold (tho not windy at least) 4.5 miles this lunchtime (love running in the daylight Grin)

Not a patch on some of your impressive mileages but I am doing OK for me

That makes 802.3

I've been trying to think up another witty acronym and totally failing so I will just say that in this context I am happy and proud to be a WHORE !!

emummy 3 weeks will be fine, especially if you keep up the long runs.
I did a notoriously hilly local 10 mile race 6 days before a hm last year and did wonder if I was being a bit optimistic. I planned to use the 10m as a training run, but of course, once there with all the other runners and the adrenaline I raced it, and I was fine for the hm.
I usually run about 4 times a week, usually between 4-7 miles but try to do a 10 -12 miler every 2-3 weeks at least just to keep up my distance ability.
If you can keep a fairly regular long run going you will not really notice two hms so close together.
I would def go for it.

And the HM talk. Can I jump in with my questions for all you wise running owls please?

So, I'm thinking of going for Hackney half on the 11th may. My longest run so far (about 3 weeks ago) was 7.5 miles so if I add on a mile a week every other week (so 7,7,8,8,9,9 etc) I'll be up to 12 before then. BUT not loads of room for injuries/wobbles/life getting in the way.

Also, training plans. I'm reluctant to tie myself to one because I think I'll find it very stressful thinking I have to run X on tuesday, Y thursday... Do you think I'd be alright if I just ensure I do my long run each week, one interval/tempo run and one 'easy' 5k?

Laughing, that's what I am basing my training plans on for my end April HM. Except this week I skipped my intervals because frankly I couldn't be bothered to motivate myself.

I also can't tie myself to a plan, my long run is at 11 so far - I am aiming for 15 before the HM but I am waiting for that first mild weekend to do it, I think I need the motivation of warmth and sunshine.

I think as is mentioned above, the atmosphere and crowd will pull you along the last few miles, so even if you only got to ten miles, you would be fine.

5 from me this evening, after not being able to go yesterday I so didn't feel like it today but gave myself a kick.up the arse and had a nice run. Interestingly it's much easier to motivate myself now even when.I feel tired or like I can't be arsed I feel so much better after a run. And 5 miles felt fine, easy almost. Once I get back my heart rate, breathing etc goes back to normal very quickly. Esp given my last stretch is uphill. So I can really see an improvement in my fitness with just 6 weeks of being consistent and running four times a week :)

Right shall read back to try and work out the anacroynm... Loving all the tips re half marathons :)

I've never followed a plan LaughinM, used to train once a week, another leisurely run, parkrun and a long run 6-12miles depending on how close I was to the race Smile

Been away a week and new thread already!

emummy is the nearby half the Crathes one? I've done both the Crathes and the Aviemore, preferred the Aviemore; first half is on the track and second half is all downhill Wink Think you could easily do both though.

Back today from week in the Alps, not much running but loads of skiing and sunshine. Managed a 5 miler up hill behind my house with lovely sunset from the top which makes 811.6 (i think, first attempt at totalling). Need to be doing loads more as just had confirmation of place in Ben Nevis race in September Grin

5mad, I think I know what you mean, Im often surprised at the disconnect between how I feel leading up to the run and how I feel when I'm running.

it's as if there is a state change and I'm operating at a different...a different....a different something or otherConfused

something else takes over which is dormant when you are doing ordinary low energy output things.

Often when I'm running I feel as if I'm not quite in my body, more observing it and a bit surprised that it can just keep going like that for such a long time

I am definitely not a wise owl and I don't have any expert knowledge at all so better listening to someone from a running background if they say otherwise, I only have my own experience to go on, but I didn't do any form of structured plan before my races. I had been running about a year before I ran my first 10k and about 18 months before my first hm . I just gradually built up my distances as I was able and inclined to. I totally realise this would be inappropriate for someone who is going from no running to a race in a relatively short time. I only started doing intervals after my first 3 hms. once I found out what they were and I only do them now in the 4 weeks or so leading up to a race to improve my pace.

What I'm trying to say is I think if you are already running regularly then I wouldn't sweat about sticking rigidly to a training regime, just do what you can. It is true, if you can run 8-10 miles you will manage the 13, although I do like to have a recent 13 under my belt psychologically. Well impressed with your plan action, I have never run 15m in my life Smile

I run because I love it and doing races came as a secondary thing, which I have also found I love, and keeps me motivated on bad days. I do like getting good times ( for me) but I don't like getting too hung up on pacing, intervals, what training I've done, etc, it spoils the running for me. Others are more motivated by running a good race. I guess it depends what you are aiming for.

Family. It's only because I have a 15 route mapped out that's partly on a busy A road with no pavements - so I need a warm Sunday morning when I can head out at 6am and nail it. Part of the route I drive down regularly and it is 4 miles of straight forest road, I crave to run down it!

Consensus on running with a cough please? Have woken with what is clearly the start of s chesty cough thanks to madthings sharing germs. I feel Ok and am hoping a shower will help but my chest is a bit tight. I normally take a salbutamol Inhaler before running as I have asthma but it's very well controlled I don't need the inhaler any other time and I just take it before running esp when it's cold to be safe iyswim.

Anyway I feel Ok, no temp jist tight chest and cough. Am meant to be doing 10km race on sunday.. Do I jist aim to do it but go slow and steady? Don't want to get ill!! I guess I will see how I feel on Sunday am going to do an easy 5km today sometime so that will maybe be an indicator of how I will get on?

I sometimes cough a bit after running and my chest feels a bit tight / tickly. I presume that this is because breathing is so much deeper and faster when running and the lungs are stimulated in a different way.
that may be physiologically totally unfounded but I am alluding to some sort of catharsis.
Also I run by the sea and something about the sea air tends to make me cough a bit ?.

Starting out easy and seeling how you feel sounds like a good plan...is there anyone else on here who as asthma and may be able to advise? ?

I think the general thought is if a cold is above the neck you're ok but if it's below then no 5madthings. Personally I go and give it a try if I feel ok I've only ever come back once when I got a stitch after a couple of mins that I couldn't get rid of because I couldn't get enough air in.
