Woo! How exciting to be the last on one thread and the first on another!

The Marathon of Médoc aka the longest marathon in the world is the most famous in France. Every 5kms there is a food station in a chateau where you have a glass of wine, and near the end of the race, oysters, steak, a full meal in fact. I've never done it but a lot of my friends have...not a marathon to do a good time on (have a good time yes!)
ohoneohtwo love the photo, and yes, it is very appropriate! I'll still keep running a little, but no intervals after Tuesday and no more long outings.
Aggressive glad to hear your legs are working again! I don't think Rome is a great marathon to do a good time on, but I'd like to do under 3h45m if possible. According to my 10k and HM times it should be possible in 3H40 but a marathon is, well much longer.
Action Yes, its easy to over eat when you run, willpower is needed sometimes. I use MFP too, or did, so I know what I can and can't eat now, my diet isn't very varied! I weigh in every day to keep an eye on things. I weigh a couple more kilos now at 58kgs than I did when I started running seriously, but I have a lot more muscle tone than previously (clothes are no tighter). I can run when fasting without too much problem. I don't think you really need to carb load before any race shorter than 30kms.

twobambinos · 15/03/2015 18:01

Anglaise that def beats the banana and water at the end of the race Smilealthough I must admit today there were plenty of sweets, Jaffa cakes and fruit on the way around.
I made do with my whitworths snack pack Smileand had some leftover seeds to enjoy after!

actiongirl1978 · 15/03/2015 18:18

Maybe I should give that a go Suzanne, my meals are usually (last night excepting) light, in order that I can snack all day. I do give in at the first sign of hunger. I do drink water first though before I eat Wink

I will miss my ability to eat huge amounts of densely calorific foods without gaining weight when my thyroid is fixed :(

Suzannewithaplan · 15/03/2015 18:34

I think as a culture we have absorbed the idea that we should eat small amounts frequently in order to keep energy levels topped up, or blood sugar stable, and that it is somehow dangerous or harmful to let yourself get hungry
When you look at the actual physiology involved this is really a misleading idea

actiongirl1978 · 15/03/2015 18:58

Oh Suzanne, I agree with you. Its just that spending all my days at home and usually in the kitchen, I eat from boredom, usually milk and cashews or tea and apple or similar. But it doesn't matter what it is if my body doesn't need it!

But the main problem is the hunger after exercise, specifically races and long runs, but then the all day feeding leads into habits that last for days. I wonder if I should eat a more substantial meal afterwards rather than a series of snacks? A friend who runs has an egg sandwich, I might give it a go.

Anglaise, I don't carb load, it is after the action I crave the carbs, although I try and eat low fibre carbs the day before I run to avoid the runs!

I might give MFP a go this week without the dieting aspect, which makes me cross and is likely to lead to self sabotage. I weigh about 62kg and am 5ft6 so by no means huge, but my tummy is feeling wobblier (even though underneath all my gym work has given me fabulous abs Grin

poppy I would imagine you will have to be really careful when things change for you, but I suppose better that you are contending with food intake than being poorly.

twobambinos woooooo! Well done on a fabulous time!!!!!!!

God MFP, I tried for like a day. It makes life so bone crushingly boring!
I'm of the opinion that paying that close attention to your diet is as unhealthy (a mindset) as totally mindless eating whatever you want.
But hey ho, each to their own Smile whatever works for you.

Also, I think snacking is ones of life's purest pleasures Grin

EdithDickie · 15/03/2015 19:08

I'm with you Thursday! I tried mfp for a couple of weeks last year but it really wasn't good for me. Former bulimic whose knee jerk reaction to stress is to eat far too much or starve myself.... Mfp really wasn't good for me! I'm much better at just "eat when hungry, stop when not" and noticing when the crazy is sneaking in!

I'm trying to summon the energy to go for a run but it's so cold and dark out there...

Sazorchard31 · 15/03/2015 19:35

I think the last total was 870.8 . I'm adding on 5 miles, a lovely route along the coast but I found it tough... Think it was the giant piece of cake 1hour earlier. Feel better for forcing myself to go. Reward was a large dominoes pizza, managed 3/4 of it so hate to think.of the calories in it!! Instead I'm.ignoring it and adding a large glass of wine... Will try and eat less tmrw.

875.8

Talking of food habits I have to snack otherwise I feel lightened, tend to try and stick to fruit when at work. At home its always something very unhealthy. No will power at all.

stilllearnin · 15/03/2015 19:44

Talking of food. The apple and ginger cake is as gorgeous as usual. Ds (14) is sugar free - luckily we have got used to just getting on with our scoff while he pretends not to notice. His willpower is scary. I agree about mfp and also I am not sure calories really exist in the way we think they do. They are a bit of a construct or sonething in my mind. Post run eggs, or natural yoghurt defo (full fat)Grin

runtothehills · 15/03/2015 20:00

Suzanne well done with the happy cow, I'm still slightly wonky cow with a list to the side that often falls over Grin

With food I've never really looked at it. I'm a 3 meals a day person and have never been much of a snacker, though day after a big run I do tend to raid the work biscuit tin mid morning.

Have a had a beautiful Mothers day in the early spring sunshine. 6 mile walk with my DDs this morning, followed by a late afternoon training run with my Mountain marathon partner. 12 miles of hills and heather, with a stunning sunset on the last top.

still trails and hills are definitely the way to go. Start with forrest tracks then try some short single paths. Keep it fairly flat to begin with. Don't expect great times and be prepared for changes in pace and rhythm. Take your phone and try to learn some map reading, helps you know where you are but also good for planning new routes Smile

882.8

actiongirl1978 · 15/03/2015 20:07

stillearnin yes I am a full fat girl all the way, I drink far too much full fat milk, eat loads of greek yog and on the carb days, buttered bagel.

For those of you who also snack and don't like MFP, how do you change things when you do notice the muffin top protruding again over the jeans?

which bits of deliciousness or post run refuelling do you cut down on?

(I know this isn't a diet thread, my interest is purely nutrition based!)

OP posts:
ThursdayLast · 15/03/2015 20:13

Work out more Grin not necessarily running though, usually means it's time to mix it up a bit.

And cut out crap. I eat crisps and drink pop, so I cut back on those kind of things. Tbh, I'm in better shape now than I've ever been so I don't feel like I need to change things at all currently!

Anglaise1 · 15/03/2015 20:13

I'm not hungry after long runs but I read that it is good to eat within an hour of a longish run to feed your muscles so they don't eat themselves or something like that. Suzanne is far more expert than me on the human metabolism! I eat a yogurt or something but never more than that.
I'm an almond fanatic and once I eat one during the day I can't stop.
Agree that MFP is mindnumbingly boring and timeconsuming but for a short period it makes you aware of what you are eating. And the time you spend entering every mouthful of food means you have less time to eat.
Action another reason not to eat too much is that you are faster if you are lighter. A good incentive for most runners to keep a check on their weight. Can't remember the stats but it was something like 2 - 3 secs slower per mile per pound of fat. When you run with a 2 litre camelback for long trail races you certainly notice the difference in speed!
I try to eat carbs for breakfast and lunch but not too many in the evening.

Anglaise1 · 15/03/2015 20:16

And don't snack, eat at meal times never in between. Living in France it is how most people eat (me too now). And although obesity is more of a problem, the French are still generally slimmer as a nation than others in Europe. If you want to eat a cake Action eat a cake instead of lunch, not as well as. That's what I do when I have a carb or sweet craving.

cinnamongreyhound · 15/03/2015 20:24

I followed coloured routes from my country park stilllearning and when I joined my club I learned quite a few from other runners. You can plot routes on mapmyrun if there aren't too many trees and follow that.

I second or third mfp as a great way to count calories and just see how much you are eating. It doesn't sound like loads to me though Actiongirl1978, having run a decent distance but it would depend on your curry portion I guess. Once you've started logging regular things it becomes much quicker. If you're happy to cut put processed carbs and it works then go with that, I personally don't like cutting out any particular groups and found less of everything worked for me. I also agree about eating when hungry not in an alloted time that society has decided is dinner time. Yes on full fat everything, why waste calories on low fat stuff that tastes disgusting and I'm similar to Anglaise1 in that if I have a treat I certainly reduce what I have for lunch if not cut it out.

Suzannewithaplan · 15/03/2015 20:35

well I try to keep up with latest thinking, but there's so much dogma spouted about sport and nutrition, and we all respond differently/have different lives around which we need to fit things, etc.

On the one hand training carb depleted and not eating carbs after heavy training leads to adaptations which mean you use fat more readily as an energy substrate and so can go for longer without refueling.

On the other hand it can be stressful to the immune system and performance is not as good if you're low on glycogen.
Also if you have a pretty heavy training schedule (say in preparation for an event) I'd think the last thing you need is the stress of being hungry and in calorie deficit?
(Thats all afaik )

I tend to eat after exercise because I time things so that it's mealtime when I get home.

orangeflutie · 15/03/2015 20:54

I ran 6 miles this morning and also have 4 to add from Thursday. Also went to gym with middle dd this afternoon and spent 45 mins on the exercise bike, so I certainly feel like I've had plenty of exercise today.

I try not to eat too much rubbish but if I have a particular craving I don't deprive myself. I've eaten quite well today and have just started on a box of maltesers, one of the my Mother's Day gifts. Would be rude not to try them surely??Smile

Suzannewithaplan · 15/03/2015 21:01

humans cant live without daily vitamin chocolate :o

ThursdayLast · 15/03/2015 21:01

Chuck a couple this way orange Grin

stilllearnin · 15/03/2015 21:24

Right thanks. I'll start in the woods close to the school run. I used to have a parking permit and run round them all the time, although I could do it, I don't want to go to 6 miles just yet as I'm too out of practice - i'll need to work out some short cuts!

HalleLouja · 15/03/2015 21:46

I have 11.7 miles to add plus Orange's 6 makes 900.5.

Tough parkrun that was faster than I expected. Then last long run before Welwyn hm next weekend.

Neeko · 16/03/2015 07:47

3.1 from me this morning. The mornings are getting lighter. The streetlights went off here before I finished at 6.15 this morning. Smile

903.6

actiongirl1978 · 16/03/2015 07:57

Neeko it is wonderful isn't it. I ran up my country lane and I didn't need a headtorch or reflective gear other than the existing flash bits on my jacket! (it is verrrry rural, I saw two cars in 35 minutes..)

I have 3 to add from this morning, a glorious refreshing, stretch of the legs. I didn't have my music on, there was a really soft rain and the birds were all tweeting, I felt very calm.

Not so now, as I shout at the children to clean their teeth...

And on the food subject, I am trying to not snack today, but to eat bigger meals. So I have just shovelled in a big bowl of porridge, blues and banana and a giant coffee, which in theory should keep me going until I get back home after a busy morning with school stuff and a pilates class. What can I eat with my tuna salad which will fill me up and keep me going until dinner?
