4 miles from me too, I had long sleeves but had to roll them up half way OhOneOhTwoOhThree, it's pretty overcast here but not too cold.

Happy Mother's Day to all you fab running mummies Flowers

emummy · 15/03/2015 11:26

5.6 miles in the sunshine this morning, not too cold as went out a bit later.

Thanks all for your kind words. Quads are totally crippled today but hopefully will have recovered by Tuesday. In a way it makes me happy as means I definitely maxed it out. Will be nice to be able to walk without wincing though...

runtothehills Humidity not too bad at the moment actually- conditions were pretty good (20ish degrees) other than up on the peak where it was drizzly and "in the cloud" but compared to the UK in winter, pretty balmy Grin

Anglaise Ooh- marathon excitement!! Where is it and what's your target? I was thinking about you and your French races yesterday as the race director of my race yesterday is French and there was a large French contingent as a result. I noted in particular that the standard of checkpoint food was way above par (salami and brie on crackers at 35k was appreciated)!!

cinnamon congrats on your article and your park run anniversary. Love the tutus. I aim to be a park run tourist when I come back to the UK this summer on my hols. Will have to be south coast though.

Hip sufferers Have you all ruled out tight IT bands? Sounds weird but I had really bad hip pain for a while- agonising to stand up after sitting for a long time and used to start up within about 7 miles of starting running. Started to think I needed a hip replacement (hypochondriac? moi?) but was just the IT bands. Very common in runners who do desk jobs apparently.

5madthings · 15/03/2015 13:58

Arghh just did a post and it got eaten..

aggressive my hips do hurt when standing after sitting for ages! Am off to Google it bands and stretches...Thankyou.

twobambinos · 15/03/2015 14:00

13.1 from me. I cant even think straight everywhere hurts Grinill be back later to add it on

5madthings · 15/03/2015 14:09

I am already doing some of the stretches recommended and they definitely help but there were a few more I could do and it seems foam roller is recommended... Can't hurt to try so I shall pick on up and give it a go! It's the outside of my hips at top of my thigh. And after running the boney pelvis bits in my but that hurt. But it's the outside hip pain that really slowed me down on my run. Thanks for that thought aggressive was feeling a bit down about the hip pain. Though they don't seem too bad today, niggly and achey but not really painful. The pain does stop as soon as I stop running and walking is fine. Am hoping it will be Ok for my half which is April 19th. and this week is just short runs from 4-6miles so should be Ok. Love having this place to chat, wish I could offer more advice to others but am Def still a novice runner!

aggressive that food sounds fab on the run! I took some jelly babies yesterday, had some at 10km and some more at 13km. 3 each time. I only took black and red ones as that's the flavours I like. They Def gave me a little boost mentally if nothing else. Plus a few mouthfuls of water.

5madthings · 15/03/2015 14:10

Well done bambinos!!!

familygermsareok · 15/03/2015 15:50

Congrats twobambinos, you have done a hm!! Brilliant Grin

aggressive I know what you mean, I quite like that sore achy muscles feeling after a hard run in a sort of masochistic way. It does make me feel good that I've pushed myself hard. I also like it when it goes away again too though.
I have heard that on the Paris marathon the final water station also gives out glasses of Wine. The French really know how to do things in style!

5madthings the chat on here is the best!

An extra unexpected 3.5 from me this afternoon. DS1 suddenly decided he would like to go out for a run with me. He used to come running sometimes last year but got busy with lots of football stuff. Best Mothers Day present ever - an extra run with DC. I also got a Terrys Chocolate Orange so can enjoy that guilt free now Wink

851.25

stilllearnin · 15/03/2015 15:52

Well thank you to everyone who came to my pity party earlier in the week I'm adding 3.75 from this morning - still not so far but I honestly thought I'd never get back to that. I'm going to stick to that course for the next two weeks and then hopefully up to 5 miles (excited about that as its been nearly 6 months since I last did that distance).

Adding on bambinos' 13.1 and my 3.75 makes 864.6

stilllearnin · 15/03/2015 15:57

Can I just say well done to agressive and bambinos too. I am a bit in awe but read a great article earlier about how all runners have the same fears, hopes and insecurities. I am going to post it on the c25k thread in a bit as it may be good reading there.

emummy · 15/03/2015 16:01

Well done twobambinos, fantastic!
Good work stillearnin , great running

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 15/03/2015 16:14

Well done bambinos Flowers

Bunting I thought I had congratulated you yesterday but can't see my post - so belated Flowers for you too Smile

germs that's lovely Smile

5mad I have IT band probs (and a desk job Wink). From what I have read, the jury is out on foam rolling. But FWIW I think it has helped me.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 15/03/2015 16:16

Anglaise This is for you Grin

actiongirl1978 · 15/03/2015 16:33

Edith yep, I am on a team of five, so I suppose a possible four or five 5m runs in 24hrs including a couple in the dark! It all depends on how fast everyone is I guess!

Irian well done on the 6.2. It does indeed all count.

Is anyone else getting carried away with how much they think they can eat after exercising? I can't seem to stop myself. A lot of it is healthy, but a lot of healthy food means a lot of calories.

On the other hand a lot is not healthy - last night for example, I finished my trail race mid afternoon, ate a banana, huge amount of cashews, a strip of dairy milk, then had a flat white while I waited outside a party venue, then lamb curry with white rice, plus two slices of toast a couple of hrs later, plus some chocolate, plus three bottles of beer.

Now the bread, I had avoided for a couple of years, but the more I run, the more I seem to crave it. The beer was a treat, I rarely drink beer. But I am starving till literally I fall asleep!

Today has been much better and everything has been healthy all day so far. But I am noticing my jeans tighten and clearly I am overeating. Is there any way to satisfy my post run/gym munchies so that I don't feel starving for the rest of the day?

Also does anyone have any ideas for high carb, low fibre, wheat free food other than porridge?

Anyway, adding in my 6.2m from my trail race which was in unbelieveably beautiful countryside in Hampshire, and for large parts of it I was running without any other runner nearby, just me, the wind, the fields and my thoughts. I could have gone around and run it again it was totally exhilarating and I absolutely got my runners high!

Oh and on the hips/itb thing, if you are rolling, concentrate on the top of your thigh or the part of the it band an inch above your knee. The middle of the thigh part doesn't really stretch and can just aggravate further and cause more pain IME (and going on the advice of my PT who is a runner and works with physios). Try also rolling around the bottom of your bum and into your hip, I find that gives a lot of relief. fwiw I tried the happy cow pose last week, I can't get my legs anywhere near the stretch! Surely runners will be useless at that with our tight hamstrings and wrecked ITBs? Grin

'happy cow'
he he:o
I can do the full happy cow (aka cow face pose) ie knee's on top of each other, but it is difficult...took me a while to get it when I added it to my yoga practice.

Calorie wise I use mfp and also log all my exercise endeavors so I've got a pretty good idea of energy output vs input, keep a close eye on my weight and I can soon see if I'm eating too much/not enough.

The trail race sounds great, I wish I had some nearly trails to run onEnvy

stilllearnin · 15/03/2015 17:10

If you use mfp you will see how easy it is for calories to mount up (i dont use it now and this is good cos I have an apple and ginger cake in the oven!).

Trail runs are my actual idea of proper running. I have a nice 6 mile run through the woods that I used to do, but that is about all my experience. I think I would like to concentrate on great routes rather than speed and distance, as this suits my general outlook and reasons for running. But I am a bit confused where to start. Any advice?

Suzannewithaplan · 15/03/2015 17:17

one thing I especially like about running is that it starts as soon as I get out of my front door and ends when I get back to said door, there is no down time spent travelling.

I could run on trails but I'd have to travel to get to them and that would add time and complications to the workout.

Then again I live 1 mile from the promenade which is an 8 mile stretch of nearly all flat tarmac/paving with no cars

actiongirl1978 · 15/03/2015 17:31

Stillearnin no advice whatsoever I'm afraid Grin this was my first trail 'race' and my second trail run! I am loosely joined to a group of trail runners, and this is the only way I would have got involved. Its a bit mad really as I live in the middle of the countryside and there are gazillions of trails near me, but it is working out a circuitous route I struggle with. I have to say though, it was awesome.

I found the first 3km really hard, getting used to the terrain and my trail shoes which have a different feel entirely to trainers, also we were on a single file path for a km so had to maintain my pace or I would have slowed people behind me. But once we had done the first couple of hills and descents, I really warmed up to it.

Interesting my knees didn't play up at all afterwards, the trail (dry though it was) was much easier on my joints. Also, there was a fun part through a forest on a winding path, felt like I was in an obstacle course!

Regarding MFP, I do have an account and a couple of weeks ago I decided to go on a diet for a few weeks to lose the padding again, just a few pounds. I got so bored logging everything, I stopped after 36 hrs!

The problem is I had a way of eating for a couple of years that kept my weight constant which was basically no processed carbs/grains and so I knew I could eat everything else as much as I liked and it didn't need monitoring. But now I have had to introduce carbs, I am all over the place as I feel like one carb leads to another.

Really I am making excuses, I eat too much and I eat because I am in the house all day too, so graze constantly. Hmm, some self arse kicking needed I think. I suppose at least I have the exercise thing sorted Grin

OP posts:
5madthings · 15/03/2015 17:31

Yes I love that I just get my kit on and go out the door. Also as I often run the same routes just with bits added on I can really see my improvements. Ie certain roads that when I started I could never imagine running the whole length of etc. I have a few off road routes near me but they are only Ok in summer when not too muddy and when light. I tend to run in the evenings so need summer time for the trail routes whereas the streets are all lit.

Pleasantly surprised that other than my niggly hips I am not achey today :)

actiongirl1978 · 15/03/2015 17:41

5madthings, it is such a nice surprise when you get out of bed and gingerly move your legs and find they don't ache!!!

OP posts:
Suzannewithaplan · 15/03/2015 17:41

I can remember times when I've wanted to reduce body size and have reduced my food intake and/or increased exercise levels, at first I felt hungry but I found that after a little while I got used to it and my appetite would adjust to match my intentions.

I do prefer to make fairly small adjustments though, it's easier to adjust to.
Sounds a bit sad but I quite enjoy using mfp Blush I find it quite interesting that the changes in body weight seem to slightly lag behind changes on energy balance

Suzannewithaplan · 15/03/2015 17:46

also I think grazing is going to be problematic for most people (?) I stick to 3 meals per day, no snacks and no drinking calories

twobambinos · 15/03/2015 17:47

I'm on my phone so I can't see who got the podium finish coz its on a diff page but omg wow and well done to you.

Also who posted a few weeks ago about cramps after running, I am suffering first time ever.

Thanks for adding my miles again I cant see. Sorry I'm terribly unreliable today.

5mad I had spd in pregnancy and it lasted well afterwards. It could still be lingering if you weren't suffering before.

I was so nervous today contemplated not going new pb slower than I hoped but I don't even care new pb wahoo 2 hours 4 minutes 6 seconds net. Delighted. Gloat finished.

Congrats on the parkrun anniversary cinnamon and goodluck with the birth. Love the tutus. My dad is currently a tourist in parkrun Australia ??
