Woo! How exciting to be the last on one thread and the first on another!

OP posts:

Anglaise that's a fabulous result- well done. I'm still not sure about compression socks. I suspect they make my calves ache in the first 5km, which is the time I find most challenging anyway, but then I think they help in the latter stages of the race, so there's a trade off.

Suzanne I guess the question re 3 vs. 4 runs per week is what are your objectives as concerns your running? If you want to get faster, then maybe drop one of the longer runs for an interval session, or pacier shorter run. I'm not an expert, but I wouldn't think doing 4x 10-12 milers would net much in terms of performance vs 3 x 10-12 milers.

Anglaise1 · 01/03/2015 10:52

Suzanne there are ranges of veterans in France, V1 is 39 - 49, V2 49 - 59 and V3 59 - 69, V4 69+
Yes, there was an exceptional V3 ahead of me. The majority of veterans are in the V1 category - in my V2 category we were 35.
If you are thinking of doing an extra run, I would do some speed work. By adding another long slow run you are going to get very good at running 10 - 12 miles slowly but it won't improve your speed or endurance!

Anglaise1 · 01/03/2015 10:56

Aggressive I wore the socks not the stocking thingies (no idea what they are called in English) which I think compress your legs more and ride up your legs which can be annoying. My calves didn't ache, although I was a bit hot at one stage. I'm sure they helped at the end - I managed to finish with a sprint!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 01/03/2015 11:02

cinnamon brilliant auto-correct there Grin

Well done Anglaise brilliant time.

I'm off out now. Looks quite windy and sun is coming in and out.

Suzannewithaplan · 01/03/2015 11:13

well that makes sense with the veterans categories.
But still putting all over 39/40's in a sep category suggests a sharp drop of in physical prowess over that age, and I'm not sure that is the case?

Im running for pleasure and health benefits and think Im already pushing my luck on mileage to be heading for 50 miles a week after 3 or 4 months of running
I feel as if running 2 days in a row would make me more injury prone, perhaps I'm being irrational?
I can see the sense of doing a shorter faster run but my speed has improved since I started (from pretty slow to not so slow :o) but I think I'd find it disappointing in terms of the post run high, I really enjoy the long cardio sessions

cinnamongreyhound · 01/03/2015 11:14

Argh no!!! Not sexism hand but second hand! Thanks OhOneOhTwoOhThree Grin

originalpiratematerial · 01/03/2015 12:35

Argh, have jinxed myself by even thinking about a plan for March. Went for what was meant to be my long run today (have done 8.4 miles each of the lat two Sundays) but it was mission abort after 3 miles. My right lower leg hurts in two places - on the outside of my knee, and on the inside of my ankle, running up my leg - it feels like I've twisted it somehow. Wah!

Anyway I've come home and had a piece of the chocolate cake I had the foresight to make for just such a crisis Grin. Will try and get an appointment with physio at the gym

So, a poxy 3.35 miles to add - that's 26.65 I think.

Hope everyone else's run today goes better!

emummy · 01/03/2015 12:52

Oh dear original I hope it's nothing serious and is sorted soon.

Just a short 2.3 miles from me, felt a bit unwell overnight so took it easy. And had to stop in the middle to rescue a lost dog which was doing its best to get knocked down.

28.95
HM training starts Tuesday!

Sazorchard31 · 01/03/2015 14:23

6.2 from me this morning at a 10k event. Feeling very happy as absolutely smashed my pb! Yey!!

35.15

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 01/03/2015 14:27

Oh no pirate hope you feel better soon. Just when you were doing so well.

I surprised myself by running 13.1 in not far off my HM PB time. The first 6.5 miles were great, I had the wind at my back, although I can't say I noticed it until I turned around and found myself running into it Grin. The last 3 miles were awful - really exposed, uphill and straight into the wind. I cut into my local country park in the hope it would be more sheltered, not taking into account how muddy it would be (and it was no more sheltered). Also - foolishly - I didn't take any food or drink with me, and found the porridge I'd made for breakfast in the microwave when I got home. No wonder I'd felt sick at various points, running that far on two cups of strong coffee and a couple of slices of toast I am making up for it now.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 01/03/2015 14:27

Well done Saz Grin

48.25

cinnamongreyhound · 01/03/2015 14:47

Hope you're ok originalpiratematerial :(

Great running OhOneOhTwoOhThree!

I think somehow the numbers have got muddled. The last total was 25.3 with 3.35+2.3+6.2+12.1=50.25 I think :)

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 01/03/2015 14:53

Thanks cinnamon! Parts of today's run reminded me of some of the CBR we did last year - those bits along the guided busway/through industrial estates where it was cold and windy Smile. It's next weekend, but I am going away on Sunday Sad.

cinnamongreyhound · 01/03/2015 15:01

It today OhOneOhTwoOhThree, two club mates are doing it. Cambridge hm is next week, Dh is staying as far from Cambridge as he can!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 01/03/2015 15:33

Oh is it, I must have got mixed up. Maybe I thought I was going away today instead next week. DH has had the car all day anyway - had to collect DS2 while I was out running.

familygermsareok · 01/03/2015 16:03

Well done aggressive, anglaise and sazor on your races. Fantastic results Smile
Shame about yours itsvery, hope you enjoy running the route later anyway.

So sorry to hear you have had more hard news madthings, I hope you find some solace in running. Take care of yourself.

suzanne I think it depends what you want from running. If you are just doing it for enjoyment I would just do what you enjoy most. If you are aiming to improve time or build up to a race then intervals are best way to improve pace and endurance. Personally I love long runs out in the middle of nowhere countryside and that is all I do if no races coming up. I add in or substitute an interval session once a week in the 4-6 weeks or so leading up to a race ( if I can be bothered). I still get a buzz from doing them but not the sheer joy of a long unpressured run.
I don't think increasing to 4 runs a week will impact adversely on your injury risk, why not add a shorter one to start with and increase over time if you are feeling ok.

9.7 miles from me this morning then 2 hours on a freezing football pitch cheering on DS1.
59.95

Suzannewithaplan · 01/03/2015 16:25

I think I'll probably stay as I am but gradually nudge up the distance for a few more months, I'm sure my muscle/bones/tendons are still adjusting to the running stimulus.

When I'm running I feel like I just want to run more, but when I'm in the gym lifting I feel like I want to eat more and get bigger/stronger again Confused

originalpiratematerial · 01/03/2015 16:35

Thanks for the good wishes! I'm trying not to fret. Rest and physio will sort it I hope. Am wondering whether my Brooks are just too knackered now as well. I have been getting used to the Asics ones and worn them twice earlier in the week. I thought I'd keep them for shorter runs and wear Brooks for long runs. But the Brooks ARE pretty worn, and perhaps just not providing the degree of support my ageing limbs require!

originalpiratematerial · 01/03/2015 16:37

Suzanne I totally know where you're coming from. I love both long runs and a really hard gym workout and love the buzz I get from both.

Suzannewithaplan · 01/03/2015 16:46

Pirate, I'd say for me the buzz from running wins but weight training is so adaptable, pretty much any injury you have can be worked around, there is always a different way to work any particular muscle group.
With running, if you cant run you cant run...and no other form of cardio comes close.
Both can also be done whilst listening to podcasts so killing 2 birds with one stone :o

5madthings · 01/03/2015 16:46

4 milrs from me today, good to get back out but it was an odd run, he first 2 km weere fab, then i hit a wall, recovered but then my hips started to hurt. The outside at the top and a bit down my thigh? I had to stop for a traffic light, pain went immediately, fine for half a km ten hurt, stopped, stretched, it went away and repeat. As soon as i stopped running or slowed to a walk the pain went. Have had a good stretch and all feels fine so wtf was that all about?! Is it just a fortnight off and havign been really lazy the past few days? Or related to hormones maybe, i get spd in pregnancy so maybe my hirmines loosened ligaments? bloody annoying but mentally i fetl better for running, could have carried on but had to be back so dp could get to wrk. My breathing, legs etc all felt good but the hip hurt.

5madthings · 01/03/2015 16:49

And re madthing2 i am not sad at his diagnosis or aspergers, its been a long time coming, so not a shock, it was just seeing the report in blakc and white and the detail of just how much he is struggling socially was hard. The goood thing is now he has a 'label' the school have to support him, and academically he is doing great, we will get there :)

Thankyou all for your thouhts etc, it means a lot xxx

ThursdayLast · 01/03/2015 17:39

Sounds like you just need you take it easy 5mad - regarding your hip. Maybe do some walk/jog intervals to ease you back in?
Glad that running is giving you a bit of headspace - you're having quite a week or two aren't you?

Oh and poor pirate too Sad

Well done on your races Aggressive and Anglaise! And sorry for yours itsvery.

Suzanne I was much like you in the beginning (although I built up distance much much more slowly stink eye DS again) just running for fun, because I could, getting to enjoy it.
Just do what feels good! No need to do what you think you 'should' be doing.
I have recently started doing some hill sprints, but only because I have also started doing parkrun and wanted to see improvement in my PB. You may find that what you like doing changes, or you get bored of LSRs.
Go with the flow maaaaaaaan Wink

emummy · 01/03/2015 18:18

Aargh! I thought running was supposed to be good for your brain?! I took a gel with me this morning to test it, forgot about it and have now fished it out of the washing machine. Still edible do you think?!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 01/03/2015 18:41

Maybe they taste nicer when they are cooked emummy Wink
