5madthings I have been relatively injury free - the knee tendonitis is the first thing in 18 months (I had the torn meniscus before starting running, running just aggravated it). I think your risk increases with the mileage you do - I've been running 50 miles a week since November (mostly on hard surfaces) which isn't kind on the knees. In the summer I run on footpaths and it is much easier.
Aggressive Albert (Valley) is his real name, he's a French guy from a neighbouring village to me, I doubt he was wearing a union jack hat! Running must be an alternative addiction to many reformed alcoholics/smokers etc.

Neeko · 05/02/2015 07:43

Morning all.
5madthings. Your extra nap did so make me giggle Grin thanks for that.

I find all the discussion on here really useful. Thanks to all who post info and advice.
I originally started running in 2011 doing couch to 5k but after a few months I suffered constant hip pain and IT issues. Figured if I rested it would go away. It didn't. Tried a chiropractor which helped for a bit but cost a lot and didn't help enough to really get me running again. For a long time I tried to accept that I wasn't meant to run. I found it really frustrating because, other than swimming, running was the first sport that I felt I could do. I compensated by pushing the pram a lot but even that caused me pain.
Eventually I went to my gp and waited 6 months for NHS physio. Saw a lovely man who confirmed my issue was all those years of carrying my kids on my right hip. He gave me exercises to do and had me running again, relatively pain-free in a matter of weeks. I still have pain now but have started foam rolling - good advice on that yesterday, thank youSmile- and I'm keeping on with the exercises and ibuprofen when necessary. I would rather run with pain than not at all. Ironically I have less pain the day after a run. Can't quite bring myself to run every day though Wink

I missed my run yesterday as had to work on. I have a 30min window this afternoon. My clothes, shoes, iPod and water bottle are already out and ready. There is clearly something addictive going on!

Suzannewithaplan · 05/02/2015 08:21

?Swapping one addiction for another is a recognized phenomena, I think it's pretty common to use exercise addiction as a kind segue ? out of substance addiction

Mayvis · 05/02/2015 09:47

3.7 to add so 294.7

I try to keep up with this thread but so many names and things to remember. Hope no one thinks I'm rude for not acknowledging everyone. So interesting to read everything as a relative newbie.

I went out with a group last night so first time running with others really. Was so enjoyable. I actually thought we'd only covered 3.7km so was super chuffed to realise it was miles.

TheSkinnyProject · 05/02/2015 11:14

3.2 miles from me this morning. So hard to leave my bed at 6am but always worth it.

It started snowing just as I reached mile 1, was so lovely and so quiet.

TheSkinnyProject · 05/02/2015 11:16

297.9

actiongirl1978 · 05/02/2015 11:21

Mayvis, the thread doesn't go quite as fast later in the year Wink

Skinny, that sounds absolutely lovely.

Is anyone else sick of the cold ( I know you are mitchy!). I don't know how much longer I can bear it. I really need the temperature to go over 10 degrees soon, my running is in a rut and I am totally blaming the weather.

Suzannewithaplan · 05/02/2015 11:27

?I'm fine with the cold now because I've got the hang of dressing for it.
I'm more concerned about running when it's really hot, I'm not keen on running in shorts and a vest top because of the heckling and leering that you get from men?Angry

TheSkinnyProject · 05/02/2015 11:54

Same suzanne I prefer the cold than heat and sunshine. It's getting the layers right, and leaving your warm bed, that's the challenge.

It helps me if I put my kit on the radiator so its toasty when I put it on Smile

Suzannewithaplan · 05/02/2015 12:10

I can't go out at all in winter without first donning clothing from the radiator, putting on hot clothes in winter is one of life's pleasures :)

Suzannewithaplan · 05/02/2015 12:18

Cold is stressful though...makes everything seem like hard work imo

actiongirl1978 · 05/02/2015 12:25

That's it, it all feels so much harder to run in the cold. My long tights are really thin so when my legs get cold it takes an age to warm them up again. Also everything looks so bleak! I need colour on trees and blossoming flowers but most of all I need warmth!

I've never run in the summer later than 8am so never had to deal with sunblock or leering men. I look forward to the experience this summer,

Anglaise1 · 05/02/2015 12:30

Its a horrible time of year. Not being able to run the footpaths through the countryside is the worst thing for me. Fortunately I've got a disused railway track near the house which is ideal for running and cycling and softer on the feet, but it doesn't give a round route even if it is 40kms long.
I don't mind running in the cold at all, like Suzanne it is easier doing that than running in hot sunshine. Even in the evenings it is very warm to run sometimes.
The only sign that spring isn't too far off is that the birds are singing again, which is lovely.

Neeko · 05/02/2015 16:28

A quick 2.25 miles from me. Not much of a run but at least it is a run. Can't see the total. Can someone add me please?

familygermsareok · 05/02/2015 16:50

Ooh, I love running in winter. Love the cold crisp air, love the frozen branches, love running on fresh snowy ground.
Don't like slippy ice, admittedly. But I live in countryside so most runs are mixture of trail and small country roads, if roads are slippy I just choose a route that is nearly all off road which us usually better. And I use trail shoes in slippy conditions which I find much better.
Also, some of the tracks I run are narrow and often get overgrown with nettles in summer and autumn but they are lovely and clear in winter I really really don't like nettles

No run today Sad . Working. But off tomorrow so can't wait.

Sazor, I often get sore shins ( just achy, not severe pain) when my shoes are old and needing replaced. Could it just be this?? ( hopeful)

HesterShaw · 05/02/2015 16:52

My internet has been broken. All mended now.

3.2 miles from me yesterday and 3.2 the day before (same route obv :) )
What's that...with Neeko's 2.25...erm...bollocks where's the calculator?

306.55

TheSkinnyProject I prefer the cold too. I get very warm running, though that may be because I'm not very fit yet! I also get extremely busy with work in the summer so may not be able to go more than twice a week or so. The thought of having to smear loads of sunblock on before going out, and then it all dripping into my eyes with sweat, and having to wear small, self conscious amounts of clothing...give me cold weather please!

Anyway, just going to RTFT.

HesterShaw · 05/02/2015 16:52

Not going today - my calves hurt.

familygermsareok · 05/02/2015 16:54

Neeko, have added your 2.25 to last total of 297.9 to make a marvellous
300.2
(Think I've got that right)

familygermsareok · 05/02/2015 16:56

Oops, xpost, it's now 306.55

HesterShaw · 05/02/2015 16:56

Argh, cross posts!

Something bad has happened to the maths!

Is it calfs or calves, incidentally?

familygermsareok · 05/02/2015 17:01

My fault, I am a very slow typist!
I think it's calves ( like halves and dwarves )

5madthings · 05/02/2015 17:22

5 miles from me,that was a bloody.brilliant run, just felt like I.could have kept going, managed to get under a ten min mile and just felt like a really easy run, consistent pace and didn't feel.hard at all. And to think I was feeling tired and didn't want to go.

Right will read back now...

Suzannewithaplan · 05/02/2015 17:28

I ok with wearing short shorts and a vest while doing gym cardio but I really dont like being outdoors with lots of skin on show, I'm going to have to find some longer length loose shorts for summer.
Maybe basketball style shorts, or would they be awkward to run in?Confused

stilllearnin · 05/02/2015 17:33

Ha! my Tim has just been on pm (R4) debunking the media reporting of the strenuous jogging research. No need for me to get in touch Sad but lovely to hear him all unexpected.

EdithDickie · 05/02/2015 18:08

Hi all, no running for me today, just work and a big roast lunch Smile

Sazor I have a friend at work who said that about high heels easing the pain and it turned out to be something wrong with the lower calf/ankle. It was too short so running hurt and that's why the heels helped because it shortened that bit. She had a regime of stretches from the physio. There was talk of a steroid injection but not sure if she had it. She's now back to full capacity. Hope that you are feeling better soon.
