mitchy your 'bad' run still sounds pretty good to me! Hope all the niggles go away and you have a good half marathon.

Anglaise1 · 29/01/2015 20:24

5madthings a 10k race will be really good practice for your HM. Don't worry about sticking religiously to your BUPA plan. If you are running a race you will run faster (20 - 30% faster than training), you will also do a warm up and cool down run so it will more than equal to 8 miles in the end.

5madthings · 29/01/2015 20:27

That's what I thought as well anglaise I will sign up then, it's only £10 and dp is actually not working that weekend, he only gets one weekend in four off, so I shall take that as a sign I should do it. :)

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 29/01/2015 20:57

Just popping on to add 3.4 frosty miles this morning.

So 2300.74

Suzannewithaplan · 29/01/2015 21:08

im 5ft 2 so bmi is 18.5 just on the edge of the healthy range.
I dont think there's anything wrong with me but I will see my GP if I cant get on top of things.

I also feel as if it is menopause related...that the change in hormone levels have had some influence in making me plateau at a lower level of body fat

I remember that I swam and cycled whilst pregnant ( I wasnt at all into running at the time) but it was getting on for 30 years ago and I cant remember at what point I down-regulated the exercise

clary · 29/01/2015 21:20

Home early from work (half day cos of snow!) and managed a rare daylight run!

Bit snowy underfoot tho so kept it short at 2.5 miles so 2303.24. Got round safely tho it started snowing half way. Glad I ran earlier as it was frosty this pm when I had originally planned to run.

runtothehills · 29/01/2015 21:56

Wow this thread moves fast!

Cinnamon I too can't imagine running when pregnant, I didn't start running till after my 2 but found hillwalking was like being at altitude the whole time.

Beautiful 8 mile night run up a local hill with the club tonight. Moon was reflecting off the snow covered hills and could run some bits without the head torch. Amazing ice slip pile-up on the way down, similar to the cycle crashes you see on the tour de france. Think there'll be some bruises tomorrow!

AggressiveBunting · 30/01/2015 01:48

4 miles from me this morning (2+2). Nearly got a taxi home as my Crossfit class involved ergo sprints alternating with 50x over kettle bell burpee sets. However, just the thought of you guys made me do the run home (and also the fact I realised I forgot to take any money Grin)

Off to pick up my race pack this afternoon for my 50k trail race next Saturday. Kind of looking forward to it. Not going to taper too much though as its mainly a practice run for another 50k race in March.

Total including me and Runs to the Hills (mostly her!) is 2315.24

cinnamongreyhound · 30/01/2015 07:26

Exciting AgressiveBuntig, I dont think you're mad at all Confused

4 frosty miles from me and my mutts, now going to check the eadt website :)

2319.24

twobambinos · 30/01/2015 09:33

suzanne im the same height as you but dont want to stand next too you my 10 extra kgs on 5ft 2 would be a big size difference!
if you did 12 miles thats approx 1200 kcal isnt it plus your daily allowance so 3000 kcal on that day wouldnt be exccessive if you were trying to maintain weight. they say that your metabolism is raised after exercise too.

i have no miles to add im resting my foot because it has been sore for over two weeks and only aggravated by running. so for the next few days ill be doing a bit of pilates. 10 miles in two weeks i know i can run the distance i just fear i cant do the time i have in mind but id rather my foot would get better now.

mitchy that doesnt sound like an awful run at all.

Suzannewithaplan · 30/01/2015 09:46

?
Your maths makes sense,Twobambinos.
Sorry to hear about the foot, could you do some non impact exercise like cycling to keep your fitness up? ?

Suzannewithaplan · 30/01/2015 10:08

?
56 kg isn't unreasonable for 5ft 2, I was able to maintain my weight at around 10 stone for a few years when I was heavily into strength training, I did eat quite a bit more than I do now though.
also did zero cardio ?

Anglaise1 · 30/01/2015 10:13

10 from me in the thunder, lightning, hail and sleet. If my running club friend wasn't with me I probably wouldn't have gone. Something bad happened to my knee half way through yesterday's run and it is much worse than the usual torn meniscus pain I always run with.
Managed to get round OK today but didn't do the 1000m intervals at the speed they should have been. That's my mileage finished for January - rest day tomorrow.
Suzanne when you run 13 miles 3000 cals is normal intake to maintain weight, just not on the days you don't!
2329.14

Mitchy1nge · 30/01/2015 10:16

I'd be worried about muscle loss if I was consistently losing weight while running - do you still keep track of your body composition Suzanne?

but then I look at my brother with his ridiculous sub 16.0 bmi and he seems absolutely fine physically but then he probably doesn't have to worry so much about osteopenia

Suzannewithaplan · 30/01/2015 10:24

I still do an hour or so of strength training every other day and my strength has held up so I don't think I've lost muscle

But yes don't want to be frail so some sort of clotted cream intervention is in order!

Anglaise1 · 30/01/2015 10:24

How many people eat within 30 mins of running? I've read that it is very important to eat straight after a run, I think because your body store of glycogen is depleted and if you don't eat to replenish it, your body instead used your existing muscle to replace the glycogen, rendering your run a waste of time as you aren't building up your muscle. If you do eat, what is the best food to eat? I usually have a yogurt or banana...or both.

Suzannewithaplan · 30/01/2015 10:27

Days I don't run are weights and cycling Aggressivebunting,I spose that must use a similar amount of calories?

will you see a physio about your knee or see how it goes?

Mitchy1nge · 30/01/2015 10:31

everyone swears by chocolate milk, just any kind, carbs and protein and rehydration in one

I had porridge yesterday and then an omelette with spinach in the evening, dismal calorie count - slipped off my high carb plan very quickly but am getting back on it

Suzannewithaplan · 30/01/2015 10:32

Not sure if muscle is necessarily catabolised to replenish glycogen Anglaise?
some will tell you that body fat stores are used but the extent to which people are able to access stored body fat seems to vary?

I eat asap after exercise, toast and nut butter usually ?

Mitchy1nge · 30/01/2015 10:37

I'd be checking my lean mass anyway Suzanne but 1. am neurotic and 2. whenever my clothes start falling off I've always gained fat and lost muscle, I do think I have a body that values fat above everything else for some reason but other people are luckier in this respect

there must be a reason why weight lifters and bod builders and strong women/men eschew too much cardio?

Suzannewithaplan · 30/01/2015 10:45

Mitchy I think it's mainly that strength and endurance require different adaptations such that taking either to extremes precludes the other ?

emummy · 30/01/2015 10:55

Sluggish run in woods today, pretty tired as helping out with dance show at nights. Felt good to get out in the sunshine though and the worst of the ice has gone so was more relaxing.
2331.75

Anglaise1 · 30/01/2015 10:57

Maybe the muscle catabolism is for those who don't have a lot of body fat - can't remember where I read the info so maybe it's rubbish!
How do you check your lean body mass Mitchy? My scales say I have 14% body fat but they probably aren't very accurate. I've never had body fat properly tested, but it is 8% lower on the scales than it was before I started running properly - even though I weigh a couple of kgs more now.

cinnamongreyhound · 30/01/2015 11:01

If I run in the evening I tend to eat dinner as soon as I come in and then put my boys to bed. If I run in the morning I come in have a cuppa, shower and get us ready and have breakfast about an hour after I've stopped. I'm don't by any means stick to rules for eating but I understand a bottle of water and a banana as soon as you get back are recommended.

Suzannewithaplan · 30/01/2015 11:16

?My guess is that there are many variables that determine from what sources glycogen is replenished.

Afaik it's very difficult to accurately determine body composition but there is a pretty tight correlation between strength and muscle mass such that if strength has remained constant so has muscle mass ?
